“Wonderful Stay”
Reviewed 1 March 2012

We came to Bassenthwaite a few years ago and stayed in Overwater Hall. It was nice but we thought we would try somewhere different this time. The Ravenstone was brilliant and we will definitely be coming back here on our next trip. It's so friendly and relaxed, they really make you feel at home. The included breakfast is great, we loved the snooker table in the games room and it was nice to relax on a night in front of the lounge fire. The hotel is joined to the start of a trail up Ullock Pike as well which gives gorgeous views over the lake. It's hard going getting up there though if you aren't used to fellwalking!

The hotel is a 5 minute drive out of Keswick which was nice as there are plenty of restaurants and pubs to give you a bit of variation on an evening. It's also 5 minutes away from Trotters World of Animals which is also a great day out. Lovely break away all round

Room Tip: We had room 14 which was one of the basic rooms but it still had lake views, a small flat screen and...

Thank you for spending time with us and we are so glad that you had fun on your stay! Next time we'll add a bit more to the breakfast to give you the energy boost to go higher on the fells! Every time a little more... We look forward to seeing you next time.

We stayed for 3 nights at the Ravenstone Hotel this weekend and we are very glad we did. From the moment you arrive you can see that it is full of character with a beautiful entrance hall and stairwell and a warm warm welcome from the owners. The dining room and stunning lounge look out over Bassenthwaite Lake, the latter with a beautiful large bay window that makes you just want to sit with a cup of tea and read the newspaper, or gaze at the view. Our bedroom and ensuite were a good standard and very clean and comfortable we just had to open the curtains and there was that beautiful view. The food is excellent and the staff look after you very well and are only to happy to help. They provide a nice touch at dinner with a jug of clear, good tasting local Ravenstone spring water. The hotel has a lovely atmosphere and we had good fun with everybody we came into contact with. There are good walks within a very short distance and Skiddaw is literally in the back garden for those who want more of a challenge, we are going up next time! Talking to the new owners they have great plans for the hotel and we wish them all the best with their venture, we will definately being going back.

We have just got back from a 2 night stay at The Ravenstone Hotel. I have given overall of Very Good, but only because the hotel was comfortable and cant complain about much as overall we did have a good weekend but this hotel just wasnt really to our taste.. If you like total peace and quiet then this is the place for you. However we dont, so the following comments are just our personal taste.. We did enjoy our stay, but found the hotel to be lacking in atmosphere as it was just too quiet for us, as it was deadly silent everywhere with no background music. We found ourselves having a conversation by whispering to each other as we was afraid to speak too loud.. However, saying that the room was extremely comfortable with comfy bed and over sheets and heated bathroom floor. The 3 course meal was gorgeous too, and the rump steak was to die for.. The dining room however was a bit too bright for my liking and again it was hard to speak to each other without feeling the need to whisper, as again no background music.. Strange really as their was plenty people in there, it was as if everyone felt the same uneasyness?? The menu should be varied too, as no lunch or snacks available, and only option of an evening was a 3 course meal @ £24 which was reasonable but this is not what people want all the time as just too much food..Maybe still have the same choice, but also have a choice of just starter and main, or main and dessert with a price per dish.. It is only 10 mins drive from Keswick centre so thats fine if you are happy to drive there, we personally prefer more on the doorstep, especially when the ambiance of the place wasnt to our taste.. The owners are trying their best, But i personally think a few small changes would help the hotel extremely.. No-one wants load banging music, I'm not saying that - but just something to take the edge off that uncomfortable silence.. We also spent the afternoon in the free games room which we enjoyed, but thought that would of been an ideal place to put a TV up with music channels on.. just a suggestion, as a games room is supposed to be fun..We did get this on a KGB deal for £99 supposed to be £295 which I would never of paid to stay here..

We are happy that enjoyed it here despite it being different than what you anticipated. We thank you for your suggestions and have music in the bar and dining room to take the edge off the quiet. We will also consider the comments regarding the menu choices.
Thank you.

We have stayed at The Ravenstone many times and we were very pleased to see that the hotel which has always been very good is now excellent due to the lovely new owners. They welcomed us on arrival like one of the family. The hotel is situated at the foot of Skidaw and overlooking Bassenthwaite Lake and a short drive from Keswick. The location is ideal for both walkers a sightseers. The hotel has lovely olde worlde charm, the rooms are clean and very comfortable, the food created by the chef is second to none, and the staff are always cheerful and extremely helpful. The hotel is always warm even on the coldest of days and there is a lovely welcoming log fire in the bar. The new owners Kim, Cherin, Tina and Adam are lovely people and nothing is too much trouble for them. We shall definitely be back and wish them every success with their new venture.

Got a Groupon deal for two nights at £99. Lovely olde worlde hotel. Close to keswick which was great! Excellent games room and loads of boxed games for the rainy first night we spent there. Great little bar too. Hosts were very friendly and put up with our typical quiet English reserve! ;) Room was lovely and bathroom had heated floor. Only thing: shower had broken on/off dial and couldn't work the drainage. Plus £28 fixed 4 course menu was a bit pricy so we ate elsewhere. Really good pub opposite Moot Hall in Keswick. We ate there twice in one day. Best attraction in keswick is the puzzle place!

The Hotel is in a lovely location , It has a nice family feel not corperate and impersonal like many hotels these days,
The new owners are only to willing to help you with any aspect of making your stay enjoyable and take the extra steps to try and think of anything you may need , They are very aproachable and friendly.
They are surrounded by excellent staff , who are always curtious, helpful and friendly.
Also superb Chef's (even if I do always put weight on by the time I return home) Worth every calorie though.
Maybe I should tackle the walks a little more .
As I have stayed at the Ravenstone before it was nice to see little changes being made to the place , and I look forward to our next visit to see the many other improvments they have planned to enhance the already lovely hotel.
I wish you all the best with your future at Ravenstone and I hope you can cope without all the sunshine you had in America.
To anyone wondering should they visit this hotel , Think no more just get it booked you will love it.(I promise)
