“Exceeding Expectations in Every Way”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 April 2012

The Ravenstone Lodge (not to be confused with the Ravenstone hotel across the road) was an exceptionally charming, friendly, and comfortable find in the Northern/central Lakes.
The location is perfect for touring/rambling while avoiding the extreme traffic in the southern Lake area. A wonderful and picture perfect setting. As Americans that have traveled extensively in the UK we felt very fortunate indeed to "discover" Ravenstone Lodge as a base for our recent four day visit to the Lake District. A completely authentic English house with great service and truly exceptional food. Breakfast, (included), leaves nothing to be desired in terms of quality or quantity. Dinner was an unexpected pleasure and competes nicely with the best in London in our view. We just did not expect a small hotel to have such a talented chef.
Service was very good and there was nothing Anthony or Karen could not do for us. As a result of fine food, wines and service it is a happy environment for guests and interaction with fellow travelers. Some rooms have been redone and others are in process by the owners, but all are comfortable and have the necessary requirements along with views. The best is this is GREAT VALUE for the experience and the money. Hard to find in England these days.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the newly done rooms. A little more money, but worth it. All rooms are good.

From looking at the website we were really excited and looking forward to a lovely few days away.
Upon arrival the place looked like a gypsy site with really scruffy static caravans and piles of debris being the first thing you are greeted with in the carpark.
Room (their top room) was lovely and spacious was fantastic views, however was not as clean as would have been hoped with toe nail clippings all over the floor at one side of the bed and general dust covering all surfaces. The bedding was high quality and clean but there was rubbish in the bin, we wondered if the cleaner had been called on to something part way through doing the room and forgot to finish it.
Food was great but the dining room seemed rather make shift, as if you were to fill your living room with tables.
Most staff very helpful apart from one chap who was more interested in talking to a friend on the phone to arrange a 'wicked good night out' to check us in.
The palce has potential to be lovely so it was really sad that it just didn't live up to expectations.

We are baffled by this review for a number of reasons. Firstly we don't know who you are as we had nobody fitting this profile staying with us in August 2011. Secondly if the room hadn't been cleaned why didn't you simply come and tell us. Thirdly the allegation that a member of our team would give priority to arranging a "wicked night out" rather than to attend to a guest is simply not credible which anyone having stayed with us would support. So I'm not sure who you are or where you stayed but either way this is not a fair reflection of the experience of staying at Ravenstone Lodge, a view supported by 99% of the other reviews on htis site.

We stayed here for two nights at the end of March and had a really enjoyable and relaxing few days. It's a great location, the decor is really tasteful and the staff are friendly and really helpful. Even though it was just March we experienced a mini heat wave so were able to take advantage of the fabulous sun terrace to enjoy afternoon tea and a a couple of sundowners. There's a nice ten minute walk to the lake and Keswick and Derwentwater are not far away. Hoping to pay a return visit soon and see the ospreys in Dodd Wood.

Room Tip: We had Room 9 which was spacious and rather luxurious and has a very stylish bath to relax in at the...

Stayed 2 nights at the Ravenstone Lodge in April. This is a great location just a 5 minute walk to the shores of Bassenthwaite lake and about 10 minutes’ drive from Bassenthwaite village and 15 minutes to Keswick.

I stayed in a superior room which looked to have been recently renovated. Although it was comfortable it was very small for a room sold as “superior”. However, this was more than made up for by the location, superb grounds and comfortable public areas of the hotel.

Breakfast was probably amongst the best I have eaten anywhere, with a good choice of cooked fare, including eggs benedict, pancakes and kippers as well as lots of variations on the standard full English. All ingredients were quality, fresh and well cooked.

I found dinner not to be quite up to the standard of breakfast with mixed results on the two nights I stayed with my wife. We had a superb lamb casserole one night but the next night my fish was under cooked.

The public areas of the hotel are well presented. The bar still shows signs of its origin as a stable block, the dining room had a real log fire and there is a very comfortable conservatory with views over the countryside towards the lake.

Overall I would recommend this hotel if you want somewhere quiet within easy reach of the northern lakes.

Room Tip: Superior room are newly refurbished, worth the small extra.

Stayed for 2 nights but had large luggage with us so the room was a squeeze. Location (and great views from the terrace) more than made up for this and would recommend staying here. Breakfast especially good :-)

We arrived at the lodge on Sat 24th March 2011. Greeted by Karen, lovely Israeli girl who runs the place with her partner as a chef. We were shown to the room which is more or less the standard B&B fair, very clean and comfy, not the largest by any means but generally very good. The facilities are very well kept had a lovely outdoor patio with plenty of seating, also conservatory which is nice in the evening with a glass of wine. Plenty of greenery in the grounds and views I have to say are truly exceptional. It is a well placed B&B that isn't in the way of the tourists; just a short drive to Keswick and also a short walk to Bassenthwaite Lake which you can get to walking through the Hotel grounds itself.

Not a great deal of staff which for me made it better, all of the staff are wonderful, polite and friendly. Nothing was too much to ask, food was cooked and prepared very well with a good menu (although somewhat limited, however were advised this would be expanded when the season gets in full swing). We had the Cumberland sausage and mash, didn't manage to finish the dish on both times eating it. Breakfast included the buffet (cereal and fruit), as well as the options of a full English.

There was also the option of Kippers for breakfast which was a new one to me (Fish for breakfast??????). If there is something on the menu that doesn't necessarily take your fancy then ask and they can russle something up....one evening I just fancied egg, bacon and chips and they duly obliged. Drinks prices were competitive, not expensive by any means but you won't be finding any supermarket type offers at this place. We stayed in the stable bar one evening rather late with the manager chatting nonsense, she explained the hotel is going through a gradual renovation with some plans a foot and they seem interesting.

All in all I would highly recommend this place, the staff are lovely and very attentive, views are beautiful and on the evening its is very tranquil with very little traffic so a good nights kip is virtually a given! oh and YES I shall be going back!

Room Tip: The superior sweet is where its at! Although we stayed in a standard double, which was comfy the su...

High class service! I work in the area and treated my boyfriend for his birthday. From the moment of booking no detail was overlooked. The views from the lodge are amazing, living in the area sometimes you forget to look so it was amazing to feel the love for the lakes again! The tour of the lodge was giving and the photos on the website are just a tease. We stayed in room one which had huge windows with a perfect view! The room was so clean, the bed was extra comfortable. The bath is big enough for two :) and the shower is so powerful :)
Now dinner was 5 star! We are both vegans and at 1st i was not going to have dinner as it sometimes causes more problems than enough. But you think they had my booking for months! not only did the food taste so good it was so well presented ! Not only was chef first class, he even came and juggled ! i cannot wait to return to see some fire flying! Our waiter was so friendly! he was constant with checking we were ok and topping up the outstanding open fire! everyone on shift had so much time for us and all greeted my boyfriend with happy birthday :) The bar was so cute had a real ale pub feel about it! I have travelled the world with my job , I have also worked and stayed in some of the top hotels! but this little gem is what the big guys forget sometimes the meaning of the word 'guest'. I will be returning to stay and be going back for meals and drinks with friends! I think i have my new local! Defo a up and comming vegan retreat!

Room Tip: I only saw room one! but i think all the rooms will be as excellent
