“Great cooking school and yummy meal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 January 2013

While checking out Playa Junquillal area we noticed a sign for Sibylle's Casa Pelicano Cooking School. We rang the buzzer and were soon warmly welcomed by Sibylle. We booked a dinner lesson for a few evenings later. There were 4 of us, 2 experienced cooks and 2 non-cooking husbands. Sibylle wouldn't let us guys off the hook... we were soon slicing, dicing, siring, 'folding' and tasting. It was fun! Our special reward was enjoying the gourmet meal that Sibylle had coached us to prepare. Who says husbands aren't good cooks! The whole experience was fun, delicious and all this for a very reasonable price. This evening is one we will fondly remember for years to come. Thank you Sibylle! (and our patient wives)

We just spent 6 nights in Casa Tigrillo at Casas Pelicano and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our secluded casa had all the comforts of home, plus a spectacular view and sound of the Pacific, just a few steps from our door. We enjoyed cooking in the well-equipped kitchen and whiling away the hours on our spacious porch. The sunsets were incredible, especially viewed from the lovely pool and the hill beyond. Early morning walks on the almost deserted beach provided a tranquill start to our day.

We took a cooking class with Sibylle and were wowed by her professionalism and expertise. In just four hours we made seafood stock, chicken stock, a ceviche appetizer, a fantastic paella, and a delicious flan. We even learned how to clean and cook squid. This cooking class is one of the highlights of our month spent traveling in Costa Rica!

If you are looking for a serene, unspoiled stay where the jungle meets the beach, Casas Pelicano is definitely the right choice. Taking a cooking class or two is certainly an added benefit!

This place is a splendid mix between comfort and secludedness where the owners, Sibylle und Jochen, ensure that you are having a wonderful time. We took our little daughter of 3 months there and she loved swinging in the hammock in the shade, long beach walks in the early mornings or staring at the amazing sunsets in the evenings. Given that the beach is 50 meters away, quick dips for the parents are not only possible in the lovely pool under the palm trees.
And there is much to explore for nature lovers: the gardener loves showing you all the animals that hide in trees and bushes and you can help the local conservationists to set free the 100s of tiny turtles or check out the plethora of fish when snorkeling around the rocks. Every evening the mix between Ticos and tourists (here about 50/50, in other beach places there is a strong expat majority) hang out in the one bar on the beach to watch the sunset and have a great fish taco. Your fully equipped kitchen allows for home cooking as well, of course, and if the 2 shops in the village do not have all you want, Sibylle and Jochen offer to bring some items from their shopping trips to Santa Cruz (if you have a car yourself, this is of course not so important). If your culinary ideas run out, do book a cooking and feasting class with Sibylle: she has opened up a café and a restaurant in Hamburg that have been among my favourites when I lived there and she will send you the recipes once you have spent a lovely afternoon marvelling at what you were able to create and learning about life in Costa Rica. High-speed internet ensures you are not cut off the outer world - but you really do not miss it at all............

Room Tip: Both of the little casas are terrific and have beach views and big terraces - you should not be scar...

The "Casas Pelicano" is a fantastic place right next to the wonderfull Junkuillal-beach, perfekt to relax and get a timeout. The bungalows are lovely furnished and equiped with a full kitchen, you feel just like at home. My favorit is just swimming in the pool enjoing the fantastic beach view after a nice beach walk. The owners Sibylle and Jochen create a warm and familiar stay. The course we took at Sibylle's cooking school was great and crowned with a wonderfull dinner.
We can fully recomand it.

The casas pelicanos bungalows sit on a cliff looking out at the pacific ocean and you can truly imagine you're at the end of the world - they're the perfect place to get away from it all. The bungalows are furnished with everything you could possibly want, with a fully equipped kitchen (no need to bring teabags, they're already there!). The hammock on the front porch was great for whiling away lazy afternoons, spotting iguanas and listening to the sea.

If you do fancy going out for a meal there's a hotel with a good restaurant just a short walk along the beach, which is handy. Sybil and Jochen will be more than happy to organise tours in the area if you want to go horseriding for example, and direct you to the little supermarket in town if you need to stock up.

The cooking school is also great, and although there's no pressure at all to do a course if you're staying there, we decided to - well worth it. 4 hours of full-on teaching, preparation work and tips from a top chef and at the end of it a huge, delicious dinner which we'd put together. Brilliant!

Sybille and Jochen (the German owner couple) are renting two very nice and completely furnished cabanas in the probably nicest spot above Playa Junquillal. In front of the cabanas you will find a marvellous garden with direct access to the wonderful beach. First choice in Playa Junquillal.

Casas Pelicanos, Playa Junquillal, Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Cooking School and Casitas for rent directly on the ocean

After three days at this sublime retreat, I cancelled the remainder of my Costa Rica plans and stayed put. Casas Pelicanos has the best situation on this something- for- everyone beach. The main house is on a point with a sweeping vista of the bay. The owners’ (German Expats) have lived in this area for 30 years; their knowledge of the area is vast and they are eager to assist/ inform if asked. For the past several decades they have been improving this former cattle ranch with tropical landscaping and amenities such as a pool and deck for guest’s use and pluperfect sunsets. It is a lush oasis in a mostly arid environment.

The Facilities:
2 houses for rent (to call them cabins would belittle them). One sleeps two people and the other sleeps four. They are handcrafted out of traditional cement, tiles and a local wood – teak perhaps? The chalet-like woodwork is enchanting, detailed and engineered extremely well. The kitchen is full sized and designed for a gourmet cook. They have even arranged for gas cook tops. This kitchen is so fully stocked , I easily could have prepared and presented a dinner for 15 guests (if I could have found 15 people on this empty beach).

There is no air-conditioning and no use for it. There are good ceiling fans and ample screen windows. The breezes were incessant day and night in mid March.

You might want to bring some earplugs to sleep at night; the pounding surf, howler monkeys, scuttling iguanas, geckos and gusty winds in the palms are comforting yet surreal to wake up to at 3 in the morning.

The Beach:
To access the beach you walk about 30 seconds through the lime trees and iguanas on a paved path. There are shade trees and driftwood for perching. The volcanic rock outcropping makes this beach front special. Local fisherman cast lasso style from these rocks. At low tide, the tidal pools are filled with wonder. And there is much variety and quantity of shells.

Walk a couple of minutes to the left and you’ve got a brown sand beach with an aquamarine shorebreak. Consistent 3-7ft waves for bodysurfing. Walk a minute or two more and there is a break a little further off the shore for some good board surfing. (never more than 5 lined up here, yet I would see surfers walking a good trek to get here).

Walk about 7 minutes to the right from Casas Pelicanos and there is a white sand beach that is sheltered and provides good snorkeling. The break in “Endless Summer” is down this way too.

Cooking School:
Sibyl is highly accredited, yet more important to me, she is a highly instinctual chef. For $50 you receive 4-6 hours of personalized instruction. Her delivery is humble. Because I was a resident for some time, we would get some yeast rising in the AM before my beach time and when I had had enough sun, it was time to knead, punch and form some dough. I asked for schooling in doughs and we learned chapatis, pizza dough, Flammekuche (killer snack from Alsace), and her own cross breed of tortillas/crepes. Her kitchen has professional capacity yet it is homey. Her vast spice collection hints she is fluent in many styles. She has an herb garden with a regional variety of cilantro and even a smoke house in the outdoor kitchen that fronts the ocean. Upon departure I was presented with printout recipes from our school time. When you don’t feel like cooking, there are enough restaurants nearby to help out.
