“Decent clean rooms.”
Reviewed 26 December 2013

The rooms are a good size and clean. Shower had lots of hot water. Older TV and limited channels but adequate. My only beef with the place is that they charge extra for WIFI. $5 for 256Kb service or $10 for marginally better. Best bet is to bring a smart phone and tether as you will get faster service. As a frequent business traveller I found this charge to be over the top. But they have one of the only shows in town and don't care what you think. Also be warned Beer off sale in the lounge is pricey.

Room Tip: upstairs room at the far end away from the bar.

This review is for those who are accustomed to hotels in remote parts of the world - which Carmacks certainly qualifies as.

The Carmacks Hotel is not a Ritz-Carlton or a Four Seasons - but it is a very good hotel providing a good basic service in remote central Yukon. the rooms are clean and quiet, the beds comfortable and the 1960's vintage shower works great. We were there in November, the temperature about -15 degrees but the hotel perfectly comfortable. The hotel serves local miners, loggers and supporting contractors and compares well with the numerous similar remote hotels in small settlements across the continent.

The food was good, the bar quiet most nights but the locals very hospitable and be warned a quickie can turn into an all nighter on a Friday night!

Room Tip: Make sure you are away from the bar.

DISCLAIMER: We only had dinner at the Carmacks Hotel. We did not stay here for the night. Dinner was astoundingly VERY GOOD. My husband had a hamburger and fries, and I ordered the evening's special: an astonishing pairing of lasagne (the BEST!) and a very good small New York steak. We would definitely eat here again. Service was just excellent! (Who knew?!)

We stayed here on our way from whitehorse to dawson. Wrong choice. It is not worth the money. The room is old and dirty, looks like it is falling off. And it is very hot in the summer. They give you a fan but it doesn't help at all. The tap water smell rusty. It's so much better to sleep in your car. There is nothing else around, except a very pricey grocery store and a restaurant next to the motel. They have wooden chalet which is cooler but in poor condition.
Would be better off to drive all the way to dawson city without stopping, or stay in coal mine campground/ mukluk manor.

This was one of the worst hotels to stay in. Room was way over priced for what you got. No real choice in the town. But when you can not sleep cause it is so hot that is terrible. When you get up in the moring and the hall way is like 20 degress cooler and the outside air is another 5 degress cooler is a joke. Make sure you give yourself enough time to get to Whitehorse when driving from Dawson City so you can find some AC. Only nice thing was that big cat wondering the halls, puts a smile on your face

A little pricey, but the room was great: big, clean and comfortable. The wi-fi sitration (due to heir location) is a little strange, but overall it was a good experience. The restaurant out front was a real bonus. We loved the lobby cat, too!

It was late and driving from Dawson City to Whitehorse doesn't give you many choices when you're tired. We already walked out of one roadside, gas station hotel because it was unheated and poor. Carmacks Hotel looked like an oasis in the Yukon territory. Surely Jack London would've endorsed this place!

The front desk was closed by 11 p.m. but you could make a reservation with the bartender at the bar. I would normally belly up to the bar for a cold one but my wife was waiting in the car and it was probably best she wasn't there with the truck drivers and other woodland denizens. Call me snooty. People were nice and you'd probably enjoy meeting the locals here. Do it when you're not tired.

We climbed the stairs to our room. The hallways were a bit dark and the carpet and wallpaper was obviously worn. What a bonus, though. We looked around the corner and we were welcomed with a friendly MEOW! Yes, ladies and gentlemen....there was a cat living in the hallway. Now, we're not just talking about wandering around. We're talking litter box, food dishes and kitty toys! Can't say I've ever seen that one!

We gave the kitty a little love and walked down the hall to our room. The room matched the hallways: tired and worn. But hey, it's late and your options are limited. "Deal with it!" was my philosophy. We camped two nights in Dawson City and the beds were comfortable and the showers were hot. Can't say much about the bathroom. The place needs a bit of handiwork. But like many places in Alaska and the Yukon, the hotel also served as an apartment building for those who stay for the season.

We got up early and found breakfast in the small grocery store next door. Great coffee, good food and off to Whitehorse. If we could've driven longer, we wouldn't have made this stop. You can find much better accomodations at the same price or cheaper in the "big" city!
