we chose to stay in Glencolmcille at the end of October, to experience the slower pace and get away from the hustle and bustle of cities. Glencolmcille certainly allows for a more relaxed pace. The welcome we received at Dooey hostel was in keeping with the traditional Irish friendliness that we were seeking. Mary spoke to us on the phone before we arrived and was instantly friendly and welcoming. Leo met us when we arrived at Dooey and was full of the hospitality that Mary had warned us about. Leo made us tea and snacks on arrival, ensured we were comfortable and kept us informed of any entertainment that would be of interest to us. The village is a 5 min walk away where you can get a quiet pint in front of an open fire. The beach is a couple of mins from the hostel and adds to the wonderful scenery from the window. There is a very cosy communal kitchen and lounge and Leo proves to be highly entertaining for the banter. A rustic accommodation which is in keeping with rural Ireland and where the warm atmosphere is a contrast to the roaring winds of Ireland's North West coastline.

Room Tip: Don't be expecting fanciness or mints on yer pillow. This place is perfect for low cost, no fri...

My husband and I were looking for a place to hang our hat for a couple of days on our 3 week journey in Ireland and this was a welcome retreat. It was a quiet time as the busy seasons has passed (we traveled in sept), each room had its own little kitchen area and bathroom. The appliances are dated but work fine, some may not fine the place as clean as they would like but we had no problems with that. Mary was a delight very accommodating and personality plus .....she really made our stay brilliant. The beach is right down the hill and I even took a dip in the ocean. At 15 euro a night it was a steal in my book.... we will be back.

We’ve discovered here we were slowly going direction “Mature couple”. As much as we liked the incredible stone construction, with beautiful hallways, the incredible scenery and the so welcoming and warm contact with Mary, we had difficulties with quite a bit of lack of cleanliness (Well, Mary told us she felt lazy that day…). That woman is so full of warmth and humor, that you can’t do much, just live it through. But as beautiful as it was, we left the next day. Still, to any of our grown kids, we would immediately recommend this piece of post 1968 value.

Great location, all rooms with views. Communal room was very nice and relaxing. Full facilities available. Beds were excellent - very clean and we slept well. Mary is FABULOUS. Nothing was too much trouble for either Mary or Leo. Best hospitality we have experienced.

Room Tip: Although the rooms are old is there is a great atmosphere in this Hostel.

The most atmospheric hostel in Ireland. It's old style, okay. But for people, who want a very special place to stay there is no better place they could find. It is one of the last reall hostels with hostel owners, who doesn't see there hostel to make money with but to help their guests to relax and to forget the hectic world outside. For people who want a unsophisticated accomodation this place is nothing. But for people who like to find contact to other guests and also moments of great silence, this is unbeatable. You never will a similar place with this mixture.

Room Tip: The 4-bed-room at the end of the floor above on the right has a great view and it's quite roomy...

The view you wake up to in the morning is amazing. The hostel is cleverly built to blend with the landscape. There are bed options or if you have a tent you can pitch outside. It is low cost. You should enjoy the conversation with the owners if you can't meet other guests:)

I loved staying in Dooey Hostel, the views from the rooms are outstanding, the facilities are good, kithcen and bathroom in each room, the beds are comfortable and warm. The best thing about this place is Mary. It's worth the trip just to meet her. You'll definitely enjoy your stay

Room Tip: Go for the 8 bed dorm, the views are the best, the craic is mighty, and the kitchen cooker heats the...
