Modern, clean and tidy. Room size were sufficient and cosy. Only downside was the bathroom size was a bit small. Great place to stay when travelling between west coast and Hobart. Pub was cosy and locals were friendly. Cafe was great to hang out in. Very romantic place (if we didnt have a sick toddler with us).

We turned up after finding it difficult to reach. The Scholars' House was ordinary to say the least, stuck in the middle of nowhere; the landscape was bleak and depressing. We were very disappointed and refused to stay, feeling quite taken in. The young girls in the reception building (some distance from the Scholars' House) were unfriendly, unhelpful. They wouldn't give us our money back for the first night, so we had to pay anyway. Advertising is totally over-rated.

Turned up late to Tarraleah and called ahead - they were only too happy to give our key to bar staff in the Highlander Inn (the pub there). Staff were quite friendly in pub and although kitchen was shut and they didn't really do room service the chef still cooked up 2 dinners for us and wrapped they up for us to have in our room.

Our room was in the converted schoolhouse - perhaps I should explain a bit. Innkeepers bought up the whole town of Tarraleah and converted it into a "hotel town". Restored all the houses and buildings - a range of which are available to stay in .

There didn't appear to actually be any other people staying in the whole of Tarraleah except for us which did give it a certain "scary movie" quality, however...

Our room was lovely, had a mezzinine bedroom with another single bed downstairs. Had tea/coffee facilities and tv plus sofa in downstairs section. Bathroom was very spacious and had very good water pressure etc.

Down corridor was a communal very large kitchen with fridge and stoves etc so you could cook your own food if you chose.

This part of Tarraleah would be excellent for a large group of travellers eg a bushwalking group who want to eat together on a budget and cook there own food together in the evening.

Was a bit weird seeing staff gardening, and taking out trash and no other guests, however was a lovely little "town".

Only complaint was serving staff in cafe in the morning - the lady behind the counter wasn't too friendly - would've expected more seeing as how they were very quiet.

Tarraleah is a one company town (it's a former hydro town bought out by a hotelier) with different styles of accommodation available, from deluxe to mid-range to backpacker style. We didn't know what to expect but upon arrival in town we had a delightful coffee at the Lodge at Tarraleah (a top end resort), then we booked into our hotel, the Scholars House (mid-range) which is the renovated former primary school. Our room had really good quality fittings, very sleek lines, and was very clean. WE decided to eat at the Pub rather than the Lodge as we had a young child with us and the food exceeded our expectations. I had a Pumpkin Soup with Coriander, and my partner and child had beautiful venison sausages and mash. We finished off the evening with a game of snooker. We would have liked to have had breakfast at the Lodge the next morning but had a train to catch in Strahan early that day. We plan to return sans child to stay at the Lodge - they have an extensive wine cellar. There is also a golf course.
