Beautifully maintained grounds and a great pub for dinner

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 2 weeks ago
We stayed in the Tarraleah Highland Caravan Park in the Estate. The Estate is the hydro village which was built in the 1930s, really well maintained grounds that you can walk around. Lovely camping area with trees between the sites, power but need to boil water before drinking. Amenities are getting old but are clean with hot showers. The estate sits above the hydro station and at the entrance are the penstock pipes and part of the hydro station. There are 4 shorts walks, we did the Tarraleah Falls and Quoll Walk, both are lovely walks. There is a cafe on site (didn't try the food, but it looked nice) and the Highland Arms pub which we did try and it was VERY! nice, had the Sweet and Sour Chicken and the Duck Pancakes with a serve of chips. The Tarraleah Apple and Cherry Cider is also very nice. Lots of wallabies and possums around the area, as well as some geese and other birds.
Date of stay: May 2024
Room Tip: Try the pub for dinner .. yum

Myself and my wife were looking forward to staying here when in March 2022 the then manager Angie from guest Services upgraded us to one of the cottages on site see below
    27/03/22
I have upgraded your booking to the Pavillion cottage at no extra cost as per our discussions.
    See you in Feb 2023.

    Tarraleah Estate
When we arrived the NEW receptionist (or maybe guest services manager) advised me that the Pavillion Cottage had been taken over by staff in September 2022 yet I had not been contacted and advised or offered another cottage on site. I did find out later that the Receptionist and her partner were living there.
This was not an ideal start to my wife and I staying at the location
We were then allocated back to a studio room in the scholars house (that was booked back in March 2022) which stated on the Booking.com site as "Entire Unit wheelchair friendly" which was not the case.
Only the ground floor with the queen bed and bathroom could be accessed with going up 2 flights of stairs to sit in a loft area with tea and coffee and fridge provided up there.
There was nowhere to put the suitcases in such a small area.
I have attached photos to show the small studio room which was not ideal for an senior couple with sore legs.
There was also NO wifi on site and for the price you pay to stay there you would think that would be included.

For the record I was advised by the receptionist that there were no other cottages available and I couldn't be moved yet when I went for a walk not many of the cottages along the main road were occupied by anyone.

If I could take a positive out of the experience it was the highland cows and the meal at the Highlander restaurant.

Room tip: If you are a senior citizen with trouble climbing stairs avoid the scholar accommodation block.

We camped here. It has well distanced and generous camping sites, and great bathrooms, but unfortunately there is no camp kitchen. All sites have power and there are many animals and birds around the park. Our problem was that the distance from Tarreleah to Lake St Clair and other places we wanted to visit were just too far to make our stay viable for the number of days we booked. The staff are lovely and service great.

Room tip: If you’re in a tent, don’t expect access to cooking/fridge facilities.

A wonderful place to stay. We stayed in one of the 8or so tastefully renovated houses and had a lovely meal in the bar/restaurant. Wish we had more time to stay longer and explore the surrounding grounds.

Room tip: We stayed in a house with another couple but they sleep 6 so would be ideal for families. Also great for kids (& adults) to get out.

Just an absolute oasis the middle of Tasmania. After driving over 3 hours we came upon this magical place. Accommodation was just magnificent with super facilities and breathtaking views. Only downside was the restaurant in the evening was less than average. BYO and enjoy.

We had a fabulous stay for 7 nights whilst fishing in the local area. The Scholars house was really clean and the loft in the rooms such a great place to relax. The communal kitchens were awesome, so large, so clean and everyone using them were so respectful. Clearly guests from all around the world have found the Estate.

But the surprise was the restaurant and bar. The food sits somewhere between wholesome home cooking and fine dining. They have a wonderful selection of Tassie wine but the pick for a weary fisherman was the Adams single malt whisky. And to top it off, the bar and kitchen staff are just wonderful wonderful people. I expect I will be back sometime, particularly if I can work out some land based fishing options in the immediate vicinity of the area.
