“Beautiful resort, well staffed and good service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 June 2012

Beautiful resort buildings, rooms with great views of the Carribbean, good service. Some trouble with WiFi, but not essential. Activities abound, just have to choose, schedule and show up for sailing, scuba, golf or tennis; good restaurants and menus, no need to leave the resort. (no reason to do so either, the surroundings are very poor and desolate).

My wife and I just returned from our third trip to Whitehouse in the past four years and had a wonderful time! We chose Whitehouse initially because of the excellent beach and secluded location, however each time we find new reasons to "soon come back". The improvements to the property over the past year are immediately evident including the walkway that leads from the main plaza to the French village, the fire pits, added sun beds, and the great seating areas all around the plaza. After speaking with the General Manager, he explained that Sandals recently bought out some financial partners, and now owns the property outright so they can make changes to the property much quicker and efficiently.
Room/Village
We stayed in the Dutch Village #2413 concierge room and had a great view (as all the rooms do!). This was the first time that we booked the concierge level service and we did enjoy it. We have stayed in the French and Italian village, but enjoyed the Dutch village the most. Yes, it is more "relaxed" and quiet than the other villages, but you really can't go wrong with any room here! If you are younger and newly married and are looking for more of a "party", then I would recommend staying in the French Village or Italian Village. The French pool was really hopping with pool volleyball, swim up bar, and several honeymooners, and the Italian (main pool) has more entertainment and games.
Food
We ate at all the restaruants and had very enjoyable meals. If you are looking for an over the top 5 star dining experience, you may be a little disappointed, but overall all of the food choices were very good with nice service. I think everyone that goes mentions the Cafe Paris and with good reason! It is a nice place to relax (especially with the new seating outside) and have a pastry, crepe, coffee, etc. and maybe relax with the local peacocks.
Grounds
As I mentioned, many upgrades to the grounds were well appreciated! In addition, the grounds crew were working nearly non-stop on keeping the area immaculate. We did find out at the returning guest dinner that Whitehouse was hosting a huge meeting that included the Managers from every Sandals/Beaches resort and Butch Stewart and his son. This might have added some extra incentive to keep the resort in pristine shape!
Pelican Bar Excursion
We made the excursion to the Pelican Bar and on the way out, many passengers felt nausea and actually got sick. Once we arrived, it was truly an incredible place! The trip back was much smoother and we are glad we went, but would not book it again.
Recap
If you want a romantic, secluded vacation with a long private beach this is a great place and for us it is THE place.
Here is a link to a pdf that, while a year old, succintly describes the property.

It seems to be difficult to find reviews of the tours they offer, so here is a review of the two we went on. FYI the tour group they use is called Island Routes. If you have any specific questions I think going the their website and contacting them would be helpful. Sandals seemed to have very limited knowledge about the tours when I called.

YS Falls and Zipline Canopy Sampler: Awesome tour! So glad we went. There is a 45 minute bus ride to the falls. They have a tour guide on board who talks and tells you a lot about Jamaica, their schools, different plants etc. The zipline was first. You go on 5 lines. 4 short ones through the trees, and across the falls, and one long one down over the falls. I didn't want to go, so just my husband went, and I was able to watch and take pictures of him the whole time. They falls were gorgeous and after the zipline we had about an hour and a half to go around before we were told to meet back at the bus. They have all sorts of staff. They walk you across the falls and take your pictures along the way. We were glad we had brought money to tip the staff. They also have a rope swing and swimming hole you can go in. You will want to bring water shoes for this one. And they only have snacks like chips and drinks to buy at the falls, so we were glad that we had brought a banana from breakfast, and some trail mix to get us through until we got back.

Dolphin Encounter from Lucea: First of all beware that it is about a 2 hour drive. They did not have a tour guide on this drive, so I was really wishing we had brought our MP3 with our audio book. This tour seemed to be less organized. I think it was the dolphin cove's fault and not our tour group. Even though there was a few bumps (like we got there they had to move our encounter time back one hour) it was still pretty cool. If you go with the encounter you get to ride belly to belly with the dolphin, and she comes up and gives you a kiss on the cheek. I felt like it was a good amount of time in the water with the dolphin (about half an hour, with us and 8 or so other people) enough time that I didn't feel we'd wasted our money. If you get the Dolphin Swim you get to ride belly to belly with the dolphin as well as have 2 dolphins on either foot push you up and across the water for a bit. Be aware that they do not allow you to take any photos with the dolphin you have to buy them form them. It's $20 per print or $66 for a CD of them all. Also included in the tour in a stingray encounter which was pretty fun. And randomly they had a camel you could ride, included as well. You can also have an encounter with a small shark, but that was $50 extra. They let you take pictures with the stingray and camel on your own camera. This place also only has snack food to buy, so bring some of your own if the tour is over lunch. Although fortunately all of these places do take US dollars, when you want to buy snacks our souvenirs.

Candlelight Dinner: We loved this as well. It started around sunset, and then by the end it was just the candlelight. The food was great (they have you fill out a menu before you go) and it was so fun to have dinner right next to the ocean and waves.

It was so great just to get out and see Jamaica. We highly recommend picking out a tour.

My wife and I went to Sandals Whitehouse for our honeymoon and it was nothing short of amazing! We came across sandals whitehouse at the recommendation of our Beach Bums travel agent Carey Driscoll (carey@beachbumvacation.com email her now you wont be disappointed!!). Having Carey do all of the hard work was so amazing and everything went according to plan. She planned our flight and travel to the resort which was right on time. We even got a complementary fruit plate from Carey while we were getting settled in our room! Once we made it to the resort we were blown away by how nice it is. The entire resort is a garden that is maintained perfectly. its difficult to go out and not see a staff member raking, sweeping, or mopping something. The food is amazing and better than expected for an all inclusive resort. Our room was a beach front walkout room with a nice view of the ocean and the pool of our village. The beds were comfortable and the accommodations in the room were top notch. We were shocked that the staff cleans your room twice a day. if you come home for lunch and mess everything up dont worry when you get back from dinner your room will be clean again! There is so much to do at the resort that we didnt really even want to pay to do anything elsewhere. We tried scuba diving (small fee for an island class but soooo worth it), snorkeling, kayaking, sailing on a catamaran, and water skiing. The water was crystal clear so scuba and snorkel will blow your mind on how many fish and sea creatures you will see. The worst part of the trip is the flight home knowing you have to cook your own food again and clean your own room. Be prepared to gain a little vacation weight!! Email Carey now and get this troop booked you wont be disappointed!

Room Tip: Dont worry about the extra cost of a beach front room. you wont want to leave your door unlocked so...

My wife and I recently returned from our honeymoon at Sandals Whitehouse and LOVED it (trip date Sat 5/12 to Sat 5/19)! Here is my honest and lengthy review –

Background: This was my 5th trip to Sandals. Previous resorts were Le Toc in St Lucia (twice), Dunn’s River in Jamaica (no longer a Sandals property) and Royal Bahamian. This was my current wife’s first trip to Sandals. We are both in our late 30s.
.
Arrival to Jamaica: We intentionally stayed the night in Miami the night before our first resort night so that we could get on an early flight to Montego Bay to maximize resort time (arrival to MBJ around 10:30am). It was a great idea because we arrived at a very empty airport (only one other flight from Philly). We got through immigration and customs and into the Sandals arrival lounge within 20 mins. As you exit customs, you can’t miss the Sandals area and your luggage is then taken off your hands. The Sandals arrival lounge is nice with self serve Red Stripe on tap available. We only had a couple of minutes to hit the restroom and grab a drink before we were escorted by a porter (who had our luggage) to our van for transport to the resort (we hadn’t booked any private car or helicopter ride). Including us, there were only 3 couples who needed a ride, so we only had a small 10+ seater minivan. We were allowed to take cups of Red Stripe in the van.. score! Don’t forget to tip the porter a buck or two.

Ride: Yes, the ride is bumpy, but not THAT bad. The first 45 minutes are fine, just twisty since you are going over the mountain to the other side of the island. The shuttle makes a stop after 45 minutes at a local bar so anyone can relieve themselves, have a drink or two, and buy local merchandise. Since this is not a Sandals bar, you will have to pay for the drinks (Red Stripe was $5). The stop lasts 15-20 minutes. The second 45 mins are bumpy ones. The road is just badly paved, but the driver avoided all pot holes and slowed down for any really bumpy sections. Just enjoy the local scenery and conversations with your fellow passengers and you’ll not even notice the time go by. On the return I even slept during the bumpy ride so you can tell it’s not THAT terrible.

Arrival at Sandals: Ahhhh, you have arrived. Let it sink in. As you arrive you are greeted with a cold washcloth and a beverage (Rum Punch was ours.. yummy). They just ask you to point out your luggage and then you take a seat in the very large lobby area. We were quickly escorted to the private Concierge Reception since we booked that level. We had checked in online before coming, so the paperwork provided just needed verification and signature. Provide cc for incidentals too. Our room wasn’t ready so we were shown where Bayside was so we could enjoy lunch. After lunch, we returned to the Concierge Reception and Kadian escorted us to our room. Kadian would become our Superstar Concierge for the rest of the week; she booked all our tours and called to check in every once and a while to make sure everything was good (we love you and miss you Kadian!!!).

Room: We were upgraded to the highest Concierge Level room, the Penthouse. This just basically meant we were on the top floor (4th) of our location, the Italian Village in our case; room 1423 specifically. The rooms were great. Large, equipped with everything I needed, patio, king bed, etc. I am 6’5” so I don’t like confined spaces. I never felt confined in this room. Loved our view; remember all rooms at this resort have a beachfront view.

Grounds: The grounds are gorgeous. It’s crazy to see the lifeguards raking the beach EVERY morning. You’d be hard pressed to find any litter around. It’s just so well kept. OK, so you’ve probably seen the map of the property and noticed that there are 3 villages (Italian, Dutch, French). Italian is the closest to basically everything, then Dutch and finally French is the farthest. Don’t worry about distance; it’s not that long of a walk. Plus the walk is along the beach. We walked many times between the main resort pool area and the French Village for lunch at Bluefields or beach volleyball. We spend one day at the French pool which was great. Wherever you are, you are fine. We did notice the Dutch pool is very quiet for those that like that. French and Main Pool have music all day.

Food: We tried every restaurant- Eleanors (fine dining), Giuseppe’s (Italian), Jasmine’s (Asian), Bayside (buffet), Neptune’s (seafood), Café de Paris (guilty pleasures), Bluefield’s (lunch grill). All were wonderful. Portions are perfect. Not too big where you feel crazy full and not too small where you think you’re just eating appetizers. If you want more, go ahead and ask. Favorite foods included the jerk pork quesadilla at Bluefields, steak at Eleanors, and crepes at Café de Paris. As returning guests, we enjoyed the weekly Sandals Select Guest dinner on Wednesday where they pull out all the stops. Delicious…and a gift of a bottle of rum too.

Activities: There a plenty of activities to keep you busy all day if you want. Pick and choose what you want to do. Every night, when they perform turndown service in your room, you will get a copy of The Daily Breeze which will tell you all the activities available the next day. We were part of the Beach Volleyball Crew this week. We had a large group that consistently played all week (Shout out to all my fellow players!) The activities are put on by the Playmakers. The Playmakers are DA BOMB! Shout out to Sean and Cherry especially. RESPECT!

Tours/Excursions: There are plenty to choose from, but after careful research prior to the trip, we decided on the following 3 tours: 1) Zipline Canopy – it is a drive (about 1:20) from the resort, but very fun. We love ziplining so this was a no brainer. 8 lines plus a surprise (message me if you want to know the surprise). The guys who run the tour are awesome and hilarious. Bring cash for tipping of driver and zipline guides. Also, cash or credit for drinks, pictures and souvenirs if you so desire. 2) Read Road Trip – a MUST for all you going to this wonderful resort. It is 2 hours of your day (Thursday). You are driven 10 minutes down the road to a local school sponsored by the Sandals Foundation. The school caters to 2-5 year olds. When there you spend a little over an hour reading, teaching, playing and just enjoying 4-5 students each. At first they are shy, but soon they will warm up to you, hug you, sit on you. It’s truly precious. Without a doubt the best tour of our vacation. It’s only $20 per person and the money goes to the foundation that provides the assistance needed for these kids to get educated. You are actually asked to comment in a book for each child you worked with so they can provide the best teaching they can. Please go on this trip! 3) Pelican Boat Cruise – Bring you’re A game on this fun cruise. You take the large catamaran out for a small snorkel trip and then continue on to the Pelican Bar. A bar made of driftwood on a sandbar about 1km off shore. There you enjoy all the best that Jamaica has to offer (Red Stripe, fresh seafood lunch, and “da good stuff" if you want). Unique place for sure. Get your name carved in the wood, leave an everlasting memento. Fun fun fun. The trip back is party city on the boat. Remember, food and drink at the Pelican Bar has to be purchased since it is not Sandals. Bring cash only and don’t forget to tip your tour guides on the boat. They are AWESOME!

Spa: We thoroughly enjoyed our couple’s massage. Price is comparable to other high end spa’s in the US and service is very similar. There is a 12% service charge added to your Spa service which serves as a tip as far as I am concerned.

Overall: Fantastic people, great resort, fun to be had for all ages. Wife wants a return trip; just have to figure out when we can fit it in next year. Feel free to message me with any other specific questions. How does it rank with my other Sandals resorts? Right at the top alongside Le Toc in St Lucia.
