“Good place to eat and stay.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 October 2013

Stayed whilst on business and hosted a small dinner here.

Food, excellent. Good quality, excellent ingredients, well cooked and very tasty. My party of 9 ate everything and enjoyed it all. Breakfast was from a wide selection and the hot food freshly cooked. I had French Toast and crispy bacon for the first time in years...Yum.

Staff, brilliant. Tried to do everything they could to help with the group and as individuals. Bit of a gripe that at quiet times (in between lunch and evening service), you have to keep dinging the bell on the bar to get service, but not a massive issue.

Rooms, good. They feel a little sanitised. Could do with making a little more homely and relaxing. Everything works as it should and they're well appointed, but it's just TOO functional.

All in all. I would be happy to stay again. It's more than value for money. It's nice that a local business is doing it right!! Well done.

Room Tip: I had a downstairs room. I would think the upstairs would be quieter.

We have visited four times over the last 15 years and standards have not fallen in this time. Our room was comfortable and a decent size. Although the bathroom seemed a little jaded, it was more than adequate.

The food was excellent. The menu allows a good choice. Service is friendly and prompt but not rushed. We had three first rate dinners, nothing disappointed in any way. In addition, the beers are good as well.

The Cook & Barker is excellently located as a base from which to explore Northumberland.

Stayed here for the first time when passing through on business.
I would say it is best described as a great country pub and restaurant that also has rooms. It's strongest points for me were the traditional bar and restaurant area with great food, good selection of beers and a good atmosphere with hands on helpful staff.
The rooms were adequate and it would be easy to critisise if it were first and foremost a hotel but it is an Inn.I found the residential area to be more of a motel type set up in a separate block at the rear of the premises. For example you have to check in and out at the pub bar.The kettle in the room is full size but the bathroom sink is not so to fill the kettle you have to use the bath tap ! I booked and pre paid for a double but got a twin. The rooms were clean and functional and the internet connection was good. All you needed for an overnight stay.Very easy to get to just off the A1

Room Tip: I think some room specs are better than others so if you are particular it is worth enquiring to mak...

I guess I must have been staying in the Cook & Barker for a dozen years now, perhaps 20 times in all? Usually if I'm working in Northumberland I try to drive from home and back in a day but I'm never too upset if work arrangements mean I have to stay there.
The next time I have a meal that's not 'very good' will be a first. Often it is excellent, sometimes it's fantastic! Last night I tried pear, chicory and walnut salad with Roquefort, then a wild rabbit casserole and finished with summer fruit pudding and vanilla cream. Every mouthful was a delight. Washed down with a couple of pints of Real Ale and it was a meal fit for a King.
Some of the other reviews have me scratching my head. Did they stay somewhere else? Are they more used to Claridge's? Have they got an axe to grind? Food this good isn't so easy to find and the Cook & Barker is also formidable value for money.
OK, the rooms are clean, functional, pleasant (and includes tea / coffee making) but not luxurious. Fair enough, the restaurant décor is from the 'broken ladder and old milk churn' school of interior design. No longer trendy, I guess, but unobtrusive and reasonably bright and clean.
The hard working staff are always friendly and helpful and, in my experience, you can tell anyone who lives inside a twenty mile radius of the Cook & Barker that that's where you are staying and they won't shut up for five minutes telling you how good it is!
For those whose mobile is super-glued to their ear, be warned, the network signal isn't great. Of, course, sometimes that's an advantage.....

Room Tip: None are wonderful but all are quite satisfactory. Best hope for a mobile signal is upstairs. But pr...

Every year we holiday in Northumberland and I can state without hesitation that the Cook and Barker is the best place to eat for both quality and value. We ate at many other places including The Treehouse and The Jolly Fisherman at Craster but fould both to be pretty poor compared to The Cook and Barker. I was surprised to see some poor reviews before travelling to Northumberland but we were not put off by this and I would urge anyone to ignore these and try it out for yourselves. Will be back again in the Spring hopefully. Another place we found to be excellent was The Joiners Arms at Newton by the Sea.

Found this place on the way back from Alnwick Garden. What a great place to eat !
I had perfectly cooked asparagus with a perfectly poached egg, new potatoes to start followed by a smoked Haddock with dauphinoise potatoes, confit tomatoes etc...absolutely beautiful ! Excellent presentation and friendly service...The rest of the party ( 4 of us) all enjoyed their meals too.
We will be returning soon !!
