We had booked a table for six people for 7.30pm on a Saturday evening. The food was pre booked also from the Christmas menu. We arrived early so didn't bother asking about the availability of our table until 7.30, at the allotted time it wasn't ready. We waiting another 15 minutes or so then we were called to our table. The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere was lovely. The restaurant is clean and tidy and well presented.
We were very quickly provided with the correct cutlery for our personal orders, we were also informed that the starters were not yet ready. Following a 30 minute wait we enquired after the starters and were informed they were just being plated up. By the time they arrived it was 8.30pm, a whole hour after our booking time.
The starters were lovely, plenty of prawns in the prawn cocktail, the anti pesto board was well stocked, and the garlic mushrooms tasty and plentiful.
Another wait followed before the main course arrived, by this time it was well after 9pm. The food arrived very well presented and ample portions. We had three turkey dinners, one Hake and two steaks. The steaks were advertised on the menu as being served with hand cut chips and pepper sauce. None arrived, the veg came to accompany the other dishes, but we had to ask where the pepper sauce and chips were. I got the impression that rather than they had forgotten them, they were hoping we would just eat the veg provided for the other meals. The chips were hastily put in the firer and after another short wait they arrived with the pepper sauce. Very nice they were too,
It was just a pity the whole order didn't arrive together, we assumed this was part of the idea of pre ordering.
Everything tasted lovely apart from the whole baby carrots, which would probably have tasted fine had they been cooked enough so you could actually eat them. The steak was cooked to perfection.
The sweets arrived shortly after the main course was finished, the service was quicker now as the place was less busy. A very generous cheeseboard, ample portions of Christmas pudding and chocolate brownies.
On the whole a very nice meal, just a shame about the slow service, the badly cooked carrots and the fact that the steaks were served not as advertised. There was a very large party group booked in for the evening which probably contributed to the service being slow, but if you take the bookings, you take on the staff so that people are not left waiting for unacceptable lengths of time.
I would recommend the Fire House, but if you book at a busy time be prepared to wait, also make a note of what you actually pre ordered so you get what you are paying for. At £20 per head the Christmas menu offered excellent value for money.
