“Made a dull business week brilliant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2012

Top place. Small, clean, efficient etc etc. The important things are the folk who run it and the amazing food they make. Family joint with a really friendly atmosphere. Nothing is too much. The pub is popular with all ages, and at weekends the restaurant bursts, but go mid week when it's empty and just as good. Breakfast is probably the best value in England! Can't recommend it enough, especially having had to stay a night in one of the corporate hotels in Kings Lynn the night before - no comparrisson. Must stay. Great for business or pleasure.

The welcome&customer service was A1.The staff could not do enough for you .
Our room was clean and well appointed, with full tea making facilities which were replaced daily as was all the toiletries and towels.Clean bedding, comfortable beds. Thanks to Carol(e)
The separate chalets are tucked around the back of the hotel quite and peaceful.
Breakfast presented as well as cooked to perfection ,both chefs ready to please(though I never got to see the full Monty!!! )
Willow house also laid on a wake for over 50 people, which again was perfect.
Thank you all for making our stay a good one on such a sad occasion for our family

I cannot recommend this hotel more highly. We stayed for two nights having travelled there in extremely cold and damp weather to find a beautifully warm room with all the attentive details that one could wish to find in a good class hotel room. The owner, who was the excellent chef and gregarious quiz master, and his staff were welcoming and friendly and the food freshly cooked and locally provisioned was excellent.

Our extended family stayed for 5 nights because of a family event in Caston nearby and enjoyed the entire experience, particularly breakfast and lunch. Duncan and Mandy who manage the hotel just could not do more. Accommodating beyond words! Coming from the US and not knowing our way around, it was an absolute pleasure to have the proprietors give us advice, directions or make suggestions for eating or places to go and/or sight-seeing opportunities. Of particular note was our arrival at 3 a.m., when Duncan greeted us and saw us to our rooms!

A pleasure from beginning to the end. The pub experience, atmosphere, and service at Christmas time was absolutely the best!

We stayed at the Willow House with friends for an overnight break and evening meal.
We checked in at the bar to a warm welcome and were shown our rooms in a separate bungalow like group behind the main building. We were told that these had been recently refurbished.
Our room was freezing cold, there were damp/water stains on the ceiling, one wall was also clearly suffering from damp problems with the plaster flaking off the wall and the bathroom was small poky and smelled damp & musty. I checked out the radiator in the bedroom and found it had been fully turned off, I opened it and also found an electric oil filled radiator in a bedroom cupboard which I put on full. The room temperature gauge read 13 DegC!
Eventually the room started to warm up. I found another electric radiator in the cupboard for our fiends in the next room as their room was freezing cold too.
Other than the damp stains etc the room was decorated OK and had the usual amenities. The bathroom was small, narrow and 'tired' but functional.
We went to the bar to meet our friends for our meal and explained the room problems. The staff were very apologetic and did their best to make us welcome.
We were joined by two more friends and we all went through to the restaurant where we were shown a super table complete with large candelabra and nice decor.
The service was very pleasant and welcoming throughout the evening. The starters we ordered arrived soon, and were very good and plentiful. The main dishes all went down well and were nicely presented. The wine we ordered was reasonably priced and was OK.
Breakfast next day was very good and offered a wide choice ranging from cereals to full English variations or even smoked haddock.
Overall an enjoyable stay, but a shame about the rooms. The damp needs sorting out, and the bathrooms are in dire need of some loving care. A room check to ensure bedroom heating is set OK in cold times before guests arrive is pretty basic stuff. All the staff we met were friendly, efficient and helpful.

Room Tip: Ask them to check that the heating is on before you arrive and that the bathroom door is opened to a...

All we can say to this guest is a further apology.
We were aware of the dampness of the walls, this problem had already been rectified, but we are awaiting for the walls to dry out thoroughly before remedial redecoration.
Thanks to the guest’s report, it came to light that there had been a leak behind the ceiling that evening, which tripped the heating system, this also happened to be the first truly cold night of the season. Again we apologise, but this was beyond our control.
If the guest wishes to visit again, please contact us and confirm the dates they stayed, so we can arrange a form of remedy.

Very disappointed with the main steak meals, that were pre-ordered to make life easier for the person who cooked the food, 8 of the steak meals were supposed to be rib-eye steak, but resembled a piece of charred leather, unable to cut and even harder to chew and digest!!. When complaints were made the Chef/Manager refused to personally acknowledge our complaint and we were told "if you ask for well done that is what you get". Party of 11 definitely not impressed and definitely not frequenting this establishment again. A birthday surprise completely ruined by the whole experience.

The party had ordered 6 of the 8 steaks well done, as might be appreciated the more a steak is cooked, the drier and tougher it will become.

All our steaks are extra-mature, brought to room temp before cooking and rested for at least 5 minutes after removal from the griddle.

The party were 'checked' 5 mins into their main meals, the response was positive! Not until just before clearance did anyone suggest that they were unhappy with their meals.

I take exception with any suggestion that their other meals were not cooked as they should be, but enjoyed, as no complaints were made of these on the night.

To summarise, the party were asked during their meal if all was ok, which it seemed to be, by the time something was mentioned in was far too late to remedy the situation, as they were about finished.

Nobody should order a well done steak and expect a juicy flavoursome meal, but this is a personal point of view, that I am convinced is the main problem here.

The complaint reads as though we really do not care, but on the contrary, we take great pride in our food, reputation and service.

The complainant, has also neglected to mention we had provided the table with birthday celebration balloons for gratis & they had also brought in a birthday cake to eat in our restaurant without charge.

This we do for many parties and hopefully this demonstrates our commitment to serving our local community.
