The Lake Shore Salzburger Hof Resort is such a memorable place to stay! Our stay this month was in conjunction with a family reunion on a bay to the south of the resort: not super convenient, but we just couldn't stand the thought of staying in those bog brand boxes in Sault Ste. Marie. The greatest charm of the Salzberger is its position overlooking the grand vista of Bachawana Bay and the large beautiful hills surrounding the bay. The second charm is the loving care invested by the family that built and operate the resort, including the grand dame who immigrated from Austria to help establish the place in the early 1970s. If you want the cookie cutter and sterile rooms of your local Holiday Inn, don't bother coming here. The rooms are all log cabin chic and are cozy in full 70s glory. We even had a fully functioning console TV in our room (I almost expected The Carol Burnette Show to come forth with a flick of the switch!). But the final glory of the stay was the partaking in the lovingly prepared food, both the plentiful breakfasts in the Gazebo Lodge and the hearty Austrian fare in the Salzburger Hof Restaurant. While I am not frequently in the mood for German food, the meals in the restaurant are very plentiful and prepared with great care. My hearty recommendations for those willing to enter a new experience over the boring ones experienced in the run-of-the-mill brand name hotel boxes!

Room Tip: The drive north on Highway 17 from Sault Ste Marie is worth the trip in itself as road weaves around the many large bay inset from Lake Superior. But take the time to journey a couple mile more to the north from the resort to the Agawa Crafts Center and Trading Post. Great local crafts to be reviewed as well as the usual tourist schlock.

Recently returned from a two night stay at Salzburger Hof Resort. The family/owners are warm and friendly. After two nights we felt that we had made new friends. The accommodations were very clean and roomy -- Peaceful and quiet. The view from the lawn outside of the lodge rooms is beautiful. The food at the restaurant was very good. The fish fry on Friday nights draws people from the entire area. The white fish and trout, potatoes, and fresh green bean salad were simple yet so fresh and good tasting. Their coffee (made with fresh, sparkling local water) was excellent. .

I found the Salzburger Hof Lakeshore resort via Google when deciding to visit the Batchawana Bay area. Traveling from Michigan with my wife and 10mo old baby girl, and since we never have been to this part of Ontario, I didn't know what to expect. The drive and views en route to the resort are stunning. Upon arrival we were greeted by Ann, the owner & host. We arrived on Tuesday afternoon were one of only 3 cars at the resort, so at first we thought the place was not a popular attraction. But by the time evening approached the place was almost full, and I now know why. The rooms are quaint and very clean. Dinner was amazing, excellently prepared Austro-German fare. The pancakes at breakfast were amazing as well. Very good hosts and cooks. We can't wait to return next summer and stay for multiple days!

We were returning from a beautiful drive from Southern Ontario to Wawa. It's a spectacular photo opportunity along Lake Superior. We saw several signs and decided to drive into the Lake Shore Resort. As we drove along the dusty gravel road off the Highway we wondered what kind of place we were about to find. As soon as we entered the gates, and saw the quaint village like scene in front of us, we immediately thought it was going to be a very expensive place. On the contrary, our 'cottage' was comfortable, charming and reasonable. We also made reservations for the Austrian Dining Room when we checked in. Our meal was reasonable and delicious with atmosphere to match. We will definitely return to this little oasis in the middle of the woods.

We've stayed here twice and it has been tremendous both times. The location is stunning and the six-person house in which we've stayed was immaculate, homey and comfortable. The views of Lake Superior will knock you out! If you are considering a stay in the area, make it a point to stay here...you'll be back every time you're in Batchawana Bay.
