I too was on a John O'Groats cycle tour and agree entirely with the other comments made. The hotel is tired, filthy, run-down and expensive for what you are presented with.
The staff (those who could speak English) were surly, rude, hard-to-find and generally gave the impression they didn't want to be there.
I hope visitors from abroad don't judge British hospitality by this run-down old relic.
It was easily the worst hotel on my travels.

Yes the hotel is a little tired and in need of a face lift or decoration but at under £60 for a Saturday night excellent value for money our room was clean Hotel has a central location friendly staff. Food is good and sensibly priced good breakfast too.

On arrival we were given a very warm welcome by Karen at reception, she was very friendly, turns out she rides a motorcycle too, it was a give away that we had arrived by bike, we had leathers on and carrying crash helmets! Throughout our stay (2 nights), the staff were cheerful and friendly, the waitress who served our breakfast, gave us a tour of the hotel.

Parts of this hotel where built in the 17th century, originally being a coaching inn and has continued to provide accommodation to the traveler ever since. In a central position on the main town square. Within an easy walk of the castle. The place is a maize of corridors, and as we entered the hotel from the car park entrance at the back, the corridor actually slopes. Lots of stairs, the rooms tucked away down the numerous corridors. Our room, the Dunheved Suite, consisted of a small entrance hall with bathroom off, and a large bedroom with a comfy double bed. The room was clean, characterful.

The building is listed which obviously restricts what can be done to the building. It is certainly a one off, which makes it fun. If you want sterile and clinical, not sure where you are as the rooms are all the same, go to a hotel chain like Travelodge etc.

We had dinner in the restaurant one night and the food was good, the portions large. Excellent value for money, as was the room rate, which included a full cooked breakfast that was freshly prepared to order.

The small car park at the rear, is adequate although the surface is breaking up badly in places, the approach is up a steep ramp. We felt that the motorbike was safe tucked away in a corner out of sight of the road. There are CTV cameras in operation overlooking the parking area.

Room Tip: Free wifi available is available in the communal areas.

A review I read said this hotel was abit dated, it is closer to dilapidated, when I opend a draw to put my clothes away the whole thing fell apart I was left holding the front handles the rest was on the floor, the wardrobe door also fell off, my husband had to screw it back on. The sink in our room had a big spider web looking crack in it. Also slipped in the shower as they dont provide rubber shower mats. The bed was also lumpy and uncomfortable. The seats in the bar were held together with black duct tape I didnt want to sit down because it looked so dirty. This is definitely not a 4 star hotel more a two at a push.

We are travelers with bicycles and stayed one night here. The hotel os on the very center of the town, near the castle. The manager was very helpful with our bikes. The building is old but neat. We recommand this place for bike toures like us.

My wife and I stayed one night and eat dinner in the restaurant. Really friendly staff, food was excellent value and a sensibly priced wine list. Our room was clean and comfortable and again very good value. Very nice breakfast and plenty of it if you could manage it!
We were delighted with this start to our holiday.
