“80th Birthday Treat”
Reviewed 2 May 2012

We booked Craigadam for D,B&B for 1 night for our Mum and Dad on our Dads 80th Bithday just for a special treat. Our Mum and Dad couldnt sing their praises enough - the whole experience was just great from the lovely room they had, great food-the grounds were lovely and the owners were just so helpful. It made our Dads Birthday very special- just what we wanted.
They would love to come and stay again.
We would love to come and stay but only live a few miles away.
Thanks so much

I have now been to Craigadam on several occasions, and every visit is a delight. I have been with my wife and friends and shall be returning with my wife and daughters later this year.
The accommodation is spacious and comfortable, with the rooms all having different themes. Doubles and twins are available, several are arranged in a courtyard behind the farmhouse with others are in the main house. The food is fresh and beautifully cooked and served in a wonderful dining room. There is a drawing room as well as a billiard room with well stocked honesty bar. The estate offers shooting, fishing and great walking possibilities with the most spectacular views in all directions. Celia and Richard are great hosts, nothing is too much trouble and they make you feel very 'at home'. If you enjoy the great outdoors and good food, wine and hospitality then you're sure to love Craigadam.

Room Tip: Scottish, Chinese and Indian rooms have door access to both courtyard and car parking area.

We have visited Craigadam several times now and return simply because nowhere else offers the same as they do.
The house is situated on a working farm and the estate rises to to rear of a very impressive house with the holiday accommodation immediately to the rear and attached to the house.
The whole atmosphere is comfortable with the feeling that you are sharing a living space with the family.
a novel idea is that the dining room has a refectory style table where all the diners eat together and the result is that conversation mingles quite naturally at supper and breakfast.
No sitting away morosely in a corner on your own in this dinning room.
The food is superb and a lot of it sourced directly from the organic farm the family runs and dinner is tremendous value with a very good small wine list that has some real finds in wines to complement the food.
My suspicion is that you should not go if you are a vegetarian but if you are wanting to eat some of the best cooked food you will find at extraordinarily reasonable prices you will be VERY satisfied go and check out what I say . Especially if you like game in season but the beef and lamb is some of the best that I have ever tasted.
The whole area is covered in farmland that produces some of the best produce in Scotland and Craigadam is the one to beat.
The staff are the friendliest and most helpful you are likely to encounter with owners Richard and Celia Pickup leading fro the front in a very relaxed and 'can do' way.
One of the best things about the place is that dogs are very much accepted and there is an enormous area to exercise them if you take one (or more) with you.
If you shoot you are in heaven, if you walk you have the best of Scottish walks to take and if you just want a few days - or longer- away you have the best spot to staycation in Scotland here.
Don't take my word for it - go and see and then let me know wajht you think.

Room Tip: Talk to Celia about whatever needs you have and you will be catered for, but talk in advance.

We were fortunate enough to spend 5 nights and have three days walked up / mini driven days at Craigadam. Fantastic hospitality and great shooting over varied landscape and excellent mini drives with mixed bag of woodcok, duck, partridge and pheasants. Finished up on Woodcock flighting which was extremely testing ( especially for my brother!)The keepers and staff were excellent and really knew there stuff. Celia's cooking was first class and the wine list was good and well tried and tested after 5 nights as was the honesty bar
Our whole party said it was the best break we'd had and we'd highly recommend Craigadam to anyone looking for a similar break
Also buy some of Richards home cured smoked salmon - fantastic !

Room Tip: All the rooms we saw were very good

Having visited Craigadam numerous times, it just get's better and better. Wonderful Hosts in Richard and Celia, nothing is too much trouble for them to help with. Meals are delicious with a varid selection of meats from the organic farm, Duck, Lamb, Venison, Pheasant, Partridge to name some of them.

Rooms are of a themed variety and are large and spacious, built around the courtyard of the main house, the house rooms are well appointed, all just a few steps to the Breakfast/Dinner table in the wood panaled dining room.

If you visit once, you will be hooked on this establishment, with further visits a certainty.

Room Tip: The rooms around the Courtyard are enormous, and of the "themed" variety.

Some may love the relaxed atmosphere, but it can be taken too far. We did not enjoy standing in the rain waiting to find out which room we had, and the steps to the room were impossible. We had not been told that that room was external, and assumed that a ground floor room (required due to mobility problems) would not entail steps. They found another room for us, round the back, that was freezing cold and only had a very low sofa. When I explained that I would not be able to sit on this, they produced another chair. However, the idea of all dining at the same time is fine, but when 8 (ish) people are at one end of a table suitable for 20 it is not so much fun. Not a good start, and the whole place was so unwelcoming that we walked out . Hoteliers say that a booking is a contract, but a contract works both ways, and this was definitely not what was expected.

Room Tip: Ask for a heater to be put on before you arrive, and query the exact location.

Thank you for writing a review.
I could perhaps point out in my defence that you requested a ground floor room and after some discussion picked the Scottish room. You did not mention that you could not walk up any steps at all. The Scottish room has two steps. The Indian room you were subsequently shown has none. I am sorry the Chesterfield settee was to low for you to sit on and the other chairs in the room to small but i did happily bring a large victorian chair to the room and did offer you another one.
The room was cool as we do not have the heating on full in the rooms we are not using that night. I immediately turned the heating to maximum when you confirmed the room was suitable.
We carried your bags to both rooms for you in the rain but I am sorry you got wet walking from your car to the room.
You did book three days with us the previous week for which you did not appear and your mobile was switched off. I had held the room for that booking and this one despite no credit card number as requested. I was somewhat surprised when you arrived that no mention was made of it.
I am sorry that you did not come and see me to say that you were not staying and offer to pay for the afternoon tea.I would obviously have said it was complimentary under the circumstances but it is always nice to be asked.

I loved the homey feel of the Craigadam. Celia, Richard and Nicollette were excellent hosts. The rooms have different themes and it makes for fun discussion around the large dinner table where all guests dine together. You almost feel like you are in the middle of some murder mystery or novel the way you get to interact with all the guests. I particularly liked my accomodation in the Scandanavian room and enjoyed reading in the parlor and having after dinner drinks and coffee with the other guests in the parlor. I would like to return with a group for hunting or fishing, which they do lots of. I also particularly love the highland cows in the front pasture - great fun!
