A couple of miles from where we live, in a quiet village, it sells its own excellent beers and has a very good food menu. Beautiful garden to sit in.

“Sunday Lunch”
Reviewed 13 January 2014

We have been before and find it a decent venue for food and their own brewed on the premises Real Ale. The Beer on the CAMRA scoring system is consistently 3.5 to 4, making it well worth a visit for the beer alone.
Well presented meals, we had the quality Roast Beef, my son in law the fish cakes which vanished in front of me, say no more.
When you specify no varieties of cabbage for vegetables, they always get it right. Never try through ignorance to give you broccoli or that other favourite cauliflower. In other words the chef is intelligent.
Clean toilets, ample car parking ,so other than the acute shortage of roast potatoes with the meals this Pub is worth visiting.

“In between Christmas and new year meal with friends”
Reviewed 3 January 2014

A lovely mid festivities meal. Service was excellent, staff very friendly and joined in our banter. Real ale is brewed on the premises and well worth a try. We had home made tomato and chill soup with bread and cheese on the side for a starter, unusual but very tasty. Belly pork starter is one to definitely try as well. The spare ribs were great value and yummy as usual. A couple of us had the salmon, beautifully cooked and we enjoyed every mouthful. We will be back.

“Great country pub”
Reviewed 19 December 2013

So many country pubs try to pretend to be something they are not with over ambitious menus (a jus reduction has no place in English pub), the Masons Arms stick to small and traditional pub menu and does it really well.
Firstly the pub looks great inside and out. When travelling through villages such as Odcombe you often see a lovely looking pub and hope it lives up to its looks. Quite often you are disappointed.
Inside was snug, warm and very comfortable. The staff were welcoming and engaging when it came to choices of drinks and food. I am not a real ale man but judging from the enthusiasm of some of the customers you won't be disappointed on that front.
I had ham, duck egg and chips for my main course. A simple dish that when done well is just great. It was done well, it was done very well. Lovely ham. A fantastic duck egg. Proper chips. A small bit of green salad to offset the guilt. Proper pub food.
My fellow diners chose a great looking cheeseburger which was beautifully presented. Fish cakes, again presented very well and generous sized. A bacon and brie ciabatta. All were polished off with great enthusiasm. Faultless.
Deserts, again, were exactly what I like to see in a pub. Sticky. Calorie loaded. Comforting. I opted for the cheese platter which was a real treat as it was all artisan cheeses that I had the choice of. One was unavailable but the staff were more than happy to recommend an alternative and they were not lacking in their knowledge. Another one of our party chose a selection of amazing ice creams and the third choice was spotted dick and custard. All eaten with suitable noises of enjoyment.

All in all a very good experience.

One comment I would make is the place is small. This is not a criticism, it is what it is. However I would think that for everyone that was lucky to have a table there was another person who came in seeking a seat only to leave disappointed. So booking is essential.

Fabulous meal and some great real ale. Only regret was that I did not meet roly poly that the beer was named after.
