“A fantastic meal in a very special place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 March 2014

Our party of 3 visited La Fosse restaurant for a belated birthday meal yesterday evening. The 3 course meal was delicious, with a great variety of dishes. All of the food is locally sourced, and the menu confirms the source of each item which is a very nice touch. The service was second to none, with exceptional service from the waiter. A special moment was when one of our party ordered the Dorset cheese board, and Mark (the owner / chef) served it himself and explained the name and source of each item of cheese. La Fosse is a real dining experience, and Mark and his team strive to give their customers a very special evening.

Although we don't live far away, we decided to treat ourselves to an overnight stay and dinner at this charming place. Mark welcomed us and showed us to our 'cosy' room-Wingreen- all rooms were named after cheeses. It was indeed cosy, warm and comfortable. After relaxing for a while, it was time for dinner in the full restaurant! G and t's first in the lovely lounge, then a dinner of smoked chowder and partridge with black pudding to start. Very tasty and seasonal. Mains were then chicken breast with stir fried veg and slow cooked lamb with root veg. Again, very tasty. we shared a dessert of poached pear in ginger with panettone and toffee sauce, followed by a Dorset cheese board to share. The food was all well cooked and presented without charging a fortune. We like the way they charge for the amount of courses you choose, as opposed to individual dish prices. Wine was very well priced also.

A good nights sleep was had in this lovely quiet village, followed by a hearty breakfast which was needed for the sturdy 10 mile walk over Cranborne Chase, which is really stunning and beautiful.

Mark and Emmanuelle were very welcoming and we had the impression that nothing would be too much trouble.

A visit here is highly recommended,. A lovely escape.

I suppose La Fosse might best be described as a restaurant with rooms. Whatever the definition, it's an absolute gem, thanks to the comfort of the bedrooms, the superb quality of the cooking and the warmth with which Mark and Danielle greet you when you arrive.
I'm a regular here, and I've never been disappointed. The guest rooms qualify as superior country accommodation and show an ongoing policy of upgrading: on my most recent stay, there were signs of new installations in the bathroom. And there's a welcome bonus in the variety of DVD movies available on the upper landing.
But La Fosse's main glory is the quality of the cuisine. You can be rest assured that Mark will be presenting you with an imaginative menu each night you stay, and that the food will be of outstanding quality, from appetizer through to dessert. Yes, the cheese board is memorable, and yes, there's a reasonable choice of wines by the glass, and yes, breakfast is a delight. In the latter connection, be sure to check out the homemade jams and marmalades.
Cranborne itself is also a good base from which to explore the beauties of Dorset, Wiltshire and Hampshire. The Cathedral city of Salisbury, for example, is an easy drive away and can be highly recommended for both shopping and sightseeing. Just make sure you use the excellent park-and-ride facility. And then at the end of the day, return for a delightful evening at La Fosse

My wife and I stayed just the one night here but we could not have chosen better. We were met by Emmanuelle and shown to a very well, appointed room. As it was a Monday night, and with only three other guests, we had the undivided attention of the chef, Mark, for dinner. Noticing that they had won the Dorset Cheese Board award for two years we enquired and it became apparent that cheese was Mark's thing. So I went for the cheese board and it did not disappoint - 10 local cheeses with only one" overseas" (IoW) on offer. Absolutely superb and the rest of the food was also excellent. A good house white and some very good local beer (Sixpenny). I would recommend this restaurant/hotel to anyone wanting a quiet break in beautiful countryside and with a relaxed place to stay. Oh, and after dinner a stroll through the village revealed the Milky Way - we don't see that in Woking. If staying in that part of the world again we will definitely try to get in here as a first choice.

We stayed here on the night of 20 September.
My partner had booked this for Dinner, bed, breakfast,as a surprise birthday treat and we were not disappointed.
Met by Emmanuelle who showed us to our room. What a delight as mentioned a spacious bedroom,bath/shower room and tucked away a seperate lounge.

The evening meal was faultless,a very talented Chef Mark who was part of the husband and wife team. You could see the passion in the way he expressed his cooking.

We cannot fault this establishment even down to the final Bill payment.

A very pleasant time and one we will go back to.

Cannot express what a delight this hidden gem is,a must visit if you are in or near this area.

Room Tip: We stayed in the old Winchester.

Lovely place to stay with an excellent restaurant. The owners, Mark and Emmanuelle, were friendly and helpful. When one of our group of 3 couples had a problem with their shower, they were immediately moved into the suite which was delightful (bedroom, large bathroom and separate sitting room - great for pre-dinner drinks). The highlight of the meal for me was a sharing cheese platter with around 10 cheeses. I would go back again.

Room Tip: The suite, while costing more than the other rooms, is good value for money.

My partner and I stayed for 1 night on the 12-09-2013. We had booked the cosy double room. We both enjoyed our very brief stay at La Fosse. We could find no fault, the husband and wife team who run the hotel are friendly, our room and bathroom were spotlessly clean. plenty of towels, comfortable bed, and beautiful quiet location. Breakfast was excellent, good quality ingredients, piping hot, and served swiftly. The lounge area is inviting and homely (which we liked), and perfect to sit and relax and have a drink. This trip we did not have dinner at the hotel, we were meeting friends, but the menu certainly looked appealing. If we visit the area again we will certainly book for dinner as well. I will be recommending La Fosse to my friends, and wish the owners well in their continued efforts to provide a little gem of a place for guests to stay and enjoy their time away from home.
