“Falling on one's feet never felt this fab!”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

£40 for b&b was an absolute steal! Beautiful, old coaching inn; delightful pub & restaurant areas. fabulous, tastefully decorated bedrooms. We had Holywell room (Holloway!). Large comfortable, quiet bed. Ensuite was superb, with ace shower.
Our meals were beautifully cooked & presented, using local products, served by friendly, helpful .staff.
Bill would have been less had we felt less comfortable in the bar and not ordered second bottle of wine!
Village itself is beautiful, on edge of (lord?) Cranborne Estate.

And all of this through booking on the day at wwww.late rooms.com on an Easter Sunday!
Dog friendly too!
Check it out!

We stayed just 1 night, on our way home from a sporting event. The welcome was warm, with a good explanation of facilities, a table booked for supper, and assistance to call home as we had no mobile signal. Our room (Knowlton) was very clean, well appointed with an excellent bathroom and a very comfortable bed. The broadband was fast too. The bathroom's complimentary Brambly toiletries smelt beautiful.

We enjoyed a superb supper; all the food was brought in a timely manner, beautifully presented and perfectly cooked. The wines and badger beers available were all very much to our liking. Staff were attentive and friendly throughout our stay.

We left replete after a good breakfast, feeling that we could happily have stayed several more nights if the demands of everyday life weren't beckoning us home. A real treat in a beautiful rural village. Thank you and your staff for looking after us so well.

We booked in for two nights in the week for a family celebration. We were contacted by a very pleasant lady from The Inn (which turned out to be the owner) prior to arrange arrival time, but on the day, because of the closure of the M1, we were going to be late so we contacted The Inn to re-arrange our arrival, which was no problem. Parking at The Inn was plentiful, the welcome was very warm on our (eventual) arrival, our room was very clean with tasteful decoration, the bed was very comfortable and the breakfast was wonderful !!!
Definitely recommended !!

H&J

Room Tip: Our room, which was above the bar I believe, was noiseless.

We ate here six months ago and really enjoyed the meal so we were ver much looking forward to visiting again. Unfortunately, our return visit was very disappointing. I had the tomato and pepper soup which was so overwhelmed with black pepper it was ruined for me. It should have been sold as spicy tomato and red pepper soup, if it had I wouldn't have chosen it. Customers should know if a food is going to be spicy. For a main my husband chose the hake and when it was served we couldn't believe what we saw. The fish portion was so small we thought he'd been served a small child's portion. Charging nearly £16 for this one would expect to have a whole fillet not a third of it. ( A few days later we dinned in another establishment and I chose lemon sole and was served two large fillets of sole for less ). Then for dessert he chose a deconstructed tart citroen which was served on a thin flat base of pasty unfortunately, the balance of this tart was totally wrong making it a claggy rather than cleansing experience. Some parts of the meal were well prepared and well displayed but insufficient, other elements were incomplete or badly balanced. We were disappointed.
We cannot fault the front of house staff for their attentiveness and their professional attitude. The premises is warm and friendly. Unfortunately they were let down by the kitchen which provided food that was not providing value for money. The serving staff did offer to take the hake back to the kitchen and replace it but we declined as all the other meals had been served. They did provide some additional vegetables free of charge but by the time they arrived everyone had finished their meals.
We do not want to put people off coming here as we believe that this may only be a temporary lapse and they will again concentrate on providing the food and the prices which will have us and our friends returning on a regular basis as this is a lovely country pub to dine in.

Arrived after a 6 hour drive to find a note on the door to say we could not get in until 6 pm. Kitchen staff and bar staff were aware that we were waiting outside. Shame this was not pointed out at time of booking.
Eventually we were checked in by a very helpful, professional young lady who was also receptive to our comments about the humming noise from the cellar fan faintly heard in the room. I had requested a room away from the road which was exactly what we were allocated. However, we were left to decide on an alternative room choice of over the kitchen or corner room on the road. She could not have given us more options!! So, after the road room being selected off we went for a beer. SUPERB and actually provided to us a bit early but we insisted. The food too was excellent - beautifully presented and very good quality - and served by lovely staff. It is not cheap but if you want quality food you have to pay for it. Great toiletries in the too with very good bed and quality linen albeit I take my own anyway. The room on first appearance was clean but there were areas in corners of room and bathroom and behind and under the bed which need more regular attention.
Unfortunately breakfast was a problem to us as we had to leave by 8 am for a meeting so we pushed into the bar area to make our own coffee so as not to disturb other guests with our coffee grinder and the smell lingers in the room so is best in a public area. We were not well received and not really spoken to. I returned and packed the car and went for breakfast at 9.30 am to be made aware that it was all finished. I was not even offered a piece of bread or fruit. It is clear on the room card that breakfast was 8 - 9 am so was my error but discussed breakfast service the night before and was told that staff are there from 7.30 am so we rather hoped to get some help, but no chance.

Room Tip: I am fussy and hear noises a lot but feel in general all of the rooms should be fine. The four we l...

Dear Good overall...

Many, many thanks for your review and the time it took to write. I am glad you enjoyed your stay overall but obviously disappointed you had some 'silly troubles'.

Specifically I very sorry you arrived to a closed pub. My understanding is you arrived at 5.45. We close between 3-6 during January and February and work with a smaller team to give staff holidays. I am sorry we did not make the open hours clear or arrange an arrival time during your booking phone call which we normally would. Apologies.

I hope you come again so we can show you our great product that won us Dorset Pub of the Year 2013 at The Dorset Tourism Awards.

Best wishes
Jane

We really enjoyed our first visit to this charming Inn. The staff were attentive and friendly and the ambience excellent. If I were to criticise anything (and that is difficult) the beef although tender and tasty did have rather a lot of gristle. I would thoroughly recommend this eatery and will certainly be visiting again.

Dear Worth a Visit

Thank you for taking the time to review. My team and I read all reviews and discuss. We were very happy to read your review and really pleased you had such a good time with us. Chef said he will look at the steak and discuss this with the local supplier. We like to keep them on their toes!! :)

Best wishes and come again soon for a sunny lunch on the sun drenched patio.

Visited for lunch. Food was decidedly underwhelming for the price; badly cooked and bordering on inedible. This brought to attention of staff, but not pursued. No offer of desert menu or further attention given thereafter. Shame as refurbishment has been done reasonably well. Won't be hurrying back.

Dear customer

I know it takes your time to write feedback and that feedback is important. For that reason we discuss all feedback from its various sources, including Tripadvisor and act upon feedback that has been carefully considered and is rich in good advice and comes from a reliable source.

I sadly feel your behaviour at our Inn this Sunday leaves us in two minds about your feedback. At The Inn this weekend we were full, full, full with happy people many of whom were without electricity due to the storms across the South and enjoying our food and hospitality. You requested a table and we said we were full but if you would like to wait for 30 minutes with a drink at the bar I am sure we could fit you in. You left after making some rude comments. You then came back and despite us giving you a table within 15 minutes you then had a long list of things you did not like when we were taking your order. All in all I think we should have agreed to call it quits and just agree we are not for you!

We served over 120 people each day this weekend and during our fabulous Valentines night and the feedback for our Dorset Pub of the Year 2013 was fabulous. Well done to my team for delivering this.
