Excellent service, cleaness of room as well as spa area, little decorations that make the atmosphere just perfect. Only one thing to point out, the internet connection was an extra paid service in the basement only (25 EUR for long 24 hours is hardly to be used). Maybe the owners do not want their guests to be bothered by news and emails during their stay.

Room Tip: lift ends at the second floor and the third floor is to be reached by stairs only

We spend our week of ski vacation. Hotel is very well maintained. Rooms are very clean and with personal touch. Spa & wellness area is just the right size for the hotel and also well cleaned.
Breakfast area is spacious and the food served of high quality and really fresh (warm bread, fresh ham and nice selection of cheess.)
And private shuttle to the ski slope just adds up to perfect....

Nestled in the sleepy village of Kleinarl in the Austrian Alps, the Hotel Angerwirt was recently our home away from home for a week-long skiing holiday. I hesitated to write this review...you know, keep the town and hotel a "secret"...but something this good has to be shared.
Every part of our stay at Angerwirt was exceptional. The hotel is owned by a very nice family, Herr & Frau Haitzman, who ensure that every detail of your stay is comfortable. They can offer information pertaining to skiing/ski schools/etc., help you make restaurant reservations, book a sleigh ride for you...just about everything that you might need help with.
The location of the hotel is perfect--just far enough away from the ski lift (but serviced every 8 minutes by a free shuttle!!) to keep things quiet, but located just minutes (no more than 10 minutes, for example) from restaurants, pubs, and the grocery store.
The property itself is stunning. The Haitzmann's must have spent a fortune making renovations to their hotel, and it shows. You know the old saying that "you can't legislate taste"? I consider my aesthetic standards to be quite high, and most "renovations" of which I read are done rather shoddily or with no consideration whatsoever given to ambiance. Not so at Angerwirt. The breakfast area (where you'll eat a very satisfying meal each morning) is nicely decorated and the perfect place to start your day. Tables are well-appointed with crisp linens and the food selection is varied, appropriate for vegetarians, meat eaters, light eaters, and heavy eaters! Make sure you sample the Haitzmann's coffee...delicious!
The lobby, though small, is adequate to conduct business at the front desk. Decor throughout the building is very well done, and reflects rather typical Austrian Alpine scenery and wildlife (including a tasteful collection of small game taxidermy--which didn't offend my leftist sensibilities too much :-)). An elevator services all three stories of the building if you need assistance or if you're simply tired after a day on the slopes.
A large basement game room/library helps entertain the kids and features a ping pong table to win your beer money.
Afternoon snacks and light beverages (including said beer) are offered in the dining area. Also in the basement is a ski equipment storage room that keeps the skis/boards/boots/poles out of your living space.
The rooms are clean, spacious (with some exceptions for the smallest of the rooms), and many (most?) have balconies from which you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery. Our large family room (2 adults/2 kids) gave us plenty of room, and you could have played a basketball game on the (shared) balcony.
Dining tips: We ate at the big hotel (Guggenberg) in town for a couple of meals and found the service and food excellent. Be aware that it's a popular, large place, so if you want something more intimate...check out our favorite, Hirner's Pizzeria. Although we love good, unpretentious food, we normally go a bit more upscale when we're on holiday, but Hirner's was exceptional in all areas, including food quality, friendliness, service, and atmosphere. They go way beyond pizza, although Michael's homemade crusts could challenge those from NYC or Chicago. Also good was the Restaurant Aichhorn (much quieter and really friendly servers). Please don't miss the sleigh ride to Jagersee and the dinner at the hotel/restaurant there.
Now for Angerwirt's "piece de resistance": The spa/pool area has to be seen to be believed. You enter a door that's next to the dining room, and the first thing you'll notice (especially in wintertime) is the nice warm air temperature and floor. Amenities include a tanning bed (5 Euro for 20 minutes), a small exercise room (some resistance equip and a small stair climber and treadmill), a stainless steel lined swimming pool with a great view of the valley, a steam + aromatherapy room (my personal favorite!), a traditional sauna room, an infrared sauna room, a tea service area, a warm footbath station, and plenty of chaise lounges for relaxing. These folks are serious about their spa, and it shows! Even the paint job in the spa/pool/exercise area is well-done (in an antiqued Italian style).
Our kids are young (4 & 6) and can be challenging at times. At no time did we feel like the staff at Angerwirt was losing their patience with us. Quite to the contrary, we were made to feel like welcomed guests in their home.
Although I wanted to keep Kleinarl and this particular hotel my own little secret, I just can't stop heaping on the praise. So now the secret is out, and I would highly recommend this Austrian gem.
