Resort is isolated, not much to do outside of resort and the excursions are a long drive away. We were the only Americans there. Resort is nice but first day had no water. The pool bars close at 6pm and then the pool closes at 8pm. They have shows at night but they are in Spanish and they kicked us out two nights cause of private parties. They only have one bar open at night and not enough staff to accommodate the amount of people at the bar. We felt we didn't get what we paid for.

For full disclosure, I have stayed at another AIR in Playa del Carmen years ago and it kicked butt. That's why I was ok to try this resort, but the a Doubletree Resort in Puntarenas was my AIR nightmare come true. Think cruise ship on land. Besides a pool snack bar with junky heat exposed food, there were 3 dining options: buffet, and two restaurants, but you had to book the restaurant (if there was availability) and we were only allowed have one booking throughout our stay. The main dining (buffet) was not open all day and so at dinner time it created this "Disneyland" effect of everyone rushing to the restaurant and standing in line because despite the empty dining room, they wanted to seat everyone as they came up (for a buffet?). Food was uneventful. Don't try to get a Diet Coke because the soda machines "were not working" (i.e. not hooked up), although you could order one and the wait staff would retrieve a flat one from somewhere on property. Rants: We were supposedly staying in the newer part of the resort, but the rooms were old, dirty, and moldy (see pictures). On Saturday afternoon, the pool bar had ONE bartender available with about 20 waiting customers. Tips: Buy wine - it's cheap ($15-$30/bottle) and the free stuff is pure vinegar. Overall, the property itself is appealing visually. The ladies we worked with at the customer service desk were always helpful and cordial. Also room maintenance. Restaurant and bar staff were bored with us. Money talks: tip the staff and you'll get better service. This includes the maids cleaning your room. In short, I would not stay here again nor recommend to friends.

Room Tip: Supposedly building 3 is newer, but I still found it to be old and moldy. Granted, the humidity is so high here, I can understand why it might be hard to keep the rooms up.

Dear Tourista De Tejas:

Thank you for your feedback. I was glad to read from your review that you found our customer service staff to be helpful and cordial.

We truly regret that we were not able to change the opinion that you have about the All Inclusive Resorts experience overall and we sincerely apologize for not meeting your expectations, we work so hard every day to offer the best us to all our guest.

We're very surprised to hear from you that our staff has to be tipped to offer a better service, because something that characterize the members of our team it is to be friendly and helpful at any time regardless the tip they will received..

We will make every effort to ensure that our rooms and restaurant service meets the highest standards and that our guests are 100% satisfied with their stay.

Thank you again for your comments.

I am torn in my review. We enjoyed our stay but certainly had issues. The keys constantly quit working, we probably had them re-keyed 5 times in a week. We had issues at check-in despite clear instructions when we reserved the rooms; check in took a long time. Our rooms were in building 1, which were convenient to everything and with great views, but had problems. The hot water was inconsistent; I only had one hot shower in a week. One of the sinks only had hot water, the cold did not work. The bathrooms seemed in need of renovation. We had to move rooms one night because the shower would not turn off. It ran nearly 24 hours before it was repaired. I think $20 for a lost towel card is too much. A friend had one stolen at the pool and had to pay, this adds stress to a relaxing vacation. The service and food were good. We were able to enjoy both restaurants as well. The kids had a great time at the pools. I would recommend talking with Arenas travel group (office in the hotel and across the street), they were a good choice for transportation to/from the hotel as well as helping us with decisions about what to do. Our most pleasant experience was with the hotel paramedic, Enrique, who was really just wonderful when our son had a terrible ear infection during the trip. He even helped us coordinate having meds delivered to the hotel. Thanks, Enrique!

My husband and I just stayed at the doubletree for our honeymoon and we enjoyed it. You can't really complain with an all inclusive. There are a lot of kids so if you want it more quiet an adults only might be the way to go. I gave an average rating because we have visited better all inclusives, but this one was just fine. We had the best view from our hotel room in bldg. 3. We paid for an upgrade since it was our honeymoon and I am so glad we did!

Room Tip: Request bldg. 3
