“A "Nearly Original" Medieval Castle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 June 2014

One of the charms of Doune is that it has been very little altered from its original build unlike many other castles in the UK so you get a real feel for for what a medieval courtyard castle was like. Although some of it is ruined much of it is intact and has been restored. I went because I am a Monty Python fan and Monty Python and the Holy Grail was filmed here and my wife loves the Outlander series of books which were filmed as a TV series here in March. We thoroughly enjoyed our vist. We were very lucky to be be there on a beautiful day without many other visitors. You should be aware that many of the interesting rooms and the ramparts with wonderful views are accessed by very steep and narrow turret staircases. If you cannot manage these there are still some very interesting parts to see without too much stair climbing such as the kitchen and the Great Hall. Admission is reasonable and the audio guide amusingly narrated by Terry Jones included in the price is a must.

“Nice Little Castle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 June 2014

Taking a tour around northern England and Scotland we planned on visiting 8 different castles. I did like this one. Not only had I seen it before (in the movie "Monty Python and the Holy Grail") but its location and size made it attractive as well.

The size of the castle isn't' huge, but its big enough so that you are able to walk around for 2 hours and felt you have seen everything.

There were not any other visitors while we were there so it was really nice to have the place to ourselves.

The staff was friendly and after we paid we didn't even see them.

“Passionate staff and pretty little castle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2014

Popped in here for a quick visit. The person manning the entrance was very helpful and knowledgeable about the castle which helps ignite an interest. I was persuaded to take the audio tour (by Terry Jones) which was actually excellent.
The castle is quite small and has a convoluted layout. The interior is of quite high quality and it was obviously more than just a border fort. Plenty of parking and toilets onsite.

“Dont miss it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 June 2014

The relatively small castle, lying north of Stirling beside a lovely little village, is well known for his history and as film location for Monty Pythons "Holy grail" and "Game of Thrones".

Good condition inside, I could very well imagine how life in the middle ages could have been.
Very informative audio guide and compared to other castles not expensive.

Available for weddings and other events.
