“great for Monty Python fans!”
Reviewed 18 July 2014

I have never been so impressed by a self-led audioguide as I was at Doune Castle. The audioguide gives you both the true history of each room and chamber as well as pointing out which scenes of Monty Python and the Holy Grail were filmed in each. Tons of exploring to do in the castle, and you're pretty much given free run of it without a million guards around watching you. I highly recommend it.

Definitely worth a visit, and don't miss the audio guide!

“Great experience!”
Reviewed 15 July 2014

Doune castle is a medieval castle in terrific shape. The FREE audio commentary byTerry Jones of Monty Python fame is a treat - a witty mix of facts and history (Jones knows his historical stuff and his enthusiasm comes across) The castle has two narrow circular stone staircases. One to the roof for an amazing view another to a bedroom. The kitchen and great hall are impressive. We weren't sure what to expect having been to the enormous Stirling castle but Doune didn't disappoint. This is a great place to visit, the audio is a must and entrance fee is really reasonable. Definitely worth visiting.

“Must visit true medieval castle”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

Small, quite hidden castle in a small town called Doune, which is worth to visit not only because it is beautiful with very interesting history, but it also played important role in Monty Python's Holy Grail. Definitely recommend to take audio guide which was done by Terry Jones and the historical information about Doune castle is enriched by sketches from the film, which makes it very interesting even for people that might not be interested in the history.

“Game of Thrones”
Reviewed 12 July 2014

I'll be honest we went mostly just went because I'm a GOT fan and we love Monty P. And as far as that's concerned it was a good experience. But there isn't much there to separate it from other castles otherwise. I wish they had done more with it considering its so far out of the way already. Even still it is very beautiful and the audio tour was very good. We spent about 90 minutes walking around.

“You must visit whilst in the Stirling Area and join Historic Scotland.”

What an experience. The audio guide was superb with an extra button to press at each stage if you wanted a deeper insight. You really could sense the activities of days gone by. I particularly liked the huge fireplace to take an ox on a spit plus storage for salt and meats smoked to preserve them.
My childish mind boggled at the toilet arrangements of yesteryear.
Once the renovation of the battlements is completed we'll visit again and also explore the sculptures in the grounds.
We met several local people as we left the castle. They enjoy taking their children for a stroll in the vicinity..
