“Very nice”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 February 2013

For my birthday this year I thought it would be great to go away for some special time with hubby without the kids. After extensively searching for somewhere in the Matakana region I decided to book the Champagne room at the Matakana Country Lodge. The reasons for choosing this place over several others was that the suite had a large bath, fancy shower and the property had an inviting outdoor swimming pool.

We were warmly greeted by Garth on our arrival and shown around the property and then to our room. The house is lovely, the grounds beautifully kept and stunning views all around.

Our suite was peaceful, private, clean and very spacious. There are a few minor improvements which could be made to enhance the experience of staying in this room however - things like fresh flowers instead of artificial arrangements, individual toiletries instead of large bottles, a bin for teabags etc and perhaps a welcome folder of information rather than a single laminated page - just little touches. That said, it was a lovely room overall and the bed supremely comfortable!

Our hosts were very friendly and interesting to talk to, as well as knowledgeable about the area. We really enjoyed Susan's homecooked breakfasts (especially the pancakes!) and dining alfresco with the beautiful view was a great way to start the day.

If you're looking for a nice relaxing place to stay in Matakana then I would certainly recommend this one.

Thank you for your suggestions and feedback. It is very important to us that our guests leave totally satisfied and feel they have had value for money.

We do have fresh flowers in the guestrooms - some of them may look artificial however they all come out of our gardens the only exception is the bamboo. There are artificial roses next to the bath in the Champagne bathroom - I think you may be talking about these. They will be removed.

A small rubbish tin in the room for tea bags/coffee etc is a great idea. I'm surprised that hasn't been bought to our attention before now.

We chose to go with large bottles of liquid soap/shampoo and conditioner in the bathrooms after a 3 month survey we had guests complete when we first opened. The majority did not like the small bottles you find in hotels - they preferred big bottles that were easily accessible.

In saying that we have been open for 3 years now so maybe it's time we did another survey to ensure things have not changed.

Glad you enjoyed your stay overall. We hope to see you back here sometime in the future.

Cheers!
Susan

We had 3 wonderful days at this amazing location. from lazing in the pool and having a spa to the wonderful 2 course breakfast we could not fault this stay.
The owners Susan and Garth make the stay very memorable as they provide tasty snacks with generous drinks in the evening and they are perfect hosts and also give very good tips on the best places to visit nearby.
We shall enjoy returning!!!!

Room Tip: We loved the Chardonnay room with it's opening doors and access to the patio. It has lovely views...

We are so glad you enjoyed the Chardonnay Room and the views from this particular room. Garth and I love encouraging our guests to get out and explore the region, as Matakana and the surrounding area has so much to offer. It was great that you stayed for 3 days - the guests that only stay 1 or 2 nights are often disappointed that they didn't get to do everything they wanted.
We hope to be welcoming you back sometime in the future.
Cheers!

My darling man booked us in for a surprise Saturday night before Christmas and we had the wonderful Champayne suite which was great with a terrific bathroom. The attention to detail in this place is a credit to Susan and Garth who were the perfect hosts. I spent most of Saturday afternoon in the pool and sunbathing plus the spapool. The wine and nibbles that were presented to us by Susan later that day were perfect before we went to a local restaurant Plume for a wonderful dinner (recommended by Susan). On Sunday morning, Susan and Garth cooked us a wonderful breakfast and Susan's homemade muesli is the best muesli I have EVERY eaten. I have travelled the world and NZ extensively and I cannot highly recommend this place - all facets were excellent.

Room Tip: The Champayne room is wonderful

This lovely, country lodge was the most glorious find. Set at the end of a long, quiet driveway with just the cows and a horse as neighbours, the property was located on top of a hill with all round wonderful views as far as the eye could see. Beautiful ensuite room opening straight onto super terrace, where the very hospitable and friendly hosts, Susan and Garth, served us delicious snacks with an early evening drink. Then off to Matakana for a great dinner at The Matakana Market Kitchen, less than ten minutes away.
And what a fab breakfast also served on that idyllic terrace.
There is the added luxury of an inviting swimming pool and a hot tub, as well as useful laundry facilities.
From here we spent a really interesting morning visiting the magnificent beaches of the Tawharanui Regional Park and a couple of great wineries. Wish we had spent longer there.

Room Tip: All three of them were beautiful

I wanted peace and quiet to relax and catch up with admin after a full week of traveling on business. This was a good choice. Friendly hosts that didn't intrude. A glass of wine to unwind. Full kitchen facility for me to heat up my takeaway curry and a lovely room. I slept like a log. The breakfast was great. Will come back.

This beautifully designed lodge is super relaxing. The rooms are furnished with every luxury you need, the beds are insanely comfortable, and there's a pool and hot tub outside with incredible views of the surrounding areas (and amazing nighttime star-watching).

Susan and Garth are the perfect hosts, they clearly love what they do, and they hold a cocktail hour with their guests (featuring NZ wine and delicious snacks!) which is awesome. However, unlike a B&B, there's plenty of room to have personal space, so you don't have to feel confined to your room.

Best of all, Matakana Village, Warkworth, and a bunch of awesome vineyards are literally a five minute drive away...that is, if you can bring yourself to leave this comfy lodge!

Room Tip: Go for the Champagne Room!

I can’t imagine that anyone who stays at Matakana Country Lodge would be disappointed!

The lodge is beautifully furnished, comfortable and inviting. Some of the best features of the common areas of the lodge are the TV room with a huge flat screen and cozy working fireplace, the living room with the plush leather couches, and the full kitchen where you could easily cook a full meal (although who wants to when you’re on holiday?) My favorite common area, though, was the outdoor patio where you could enjoy a coffee, a glass of wine, or a meal with the most gorgeous views of rolling hills, valleys, mountains, vineyards, farms, and even the ocean! The patio area also has a huge jetted hot tub spa, which was a wonderful treat on a cold winter night, and there’s also a pool, which would be nice to use in the summer, I imagine.

The landscaping, exterior grounds, and indoor furnishings and decorations are impeccable, but not so fancy that you feel like you’re staying in a museum. The rooms are spacious and have generous amenities. They had the most wonderful bed linens, and they even put fresh flowers and fresh milk in your room for your coffee or tea - how thoughtful!

What can I say about the owners Susan and Garth except that they will undoubtedly become your new best Matakana friends. They’ve never met a stranger, and they seem truly delighted to meet and know each one of their guests. The happy hour and breakfast conversations with them were delightful! I did like the fact that, different from a bed and breakfast, the Lodge owners live in separate quarters so that you do feel like you have some privacy.

The happy hour drinks and snacks and the breakfast that was included with the room were prepared fresh by Susan and the food was both generous and yummy.

Everything at Matakana Country Lodge was first class, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Matakana is a wonderful Auckland getaway destination and a stay at the Matakana Country Lodge made my trip there even better.

Room Tip: The Champagne room has the great big sunken tub, and the Chardonnay room has the best views. All of...
