“Just lovely”
Reviewed 18 May 2013

Lovely location run by a lovely couple. Perfect place to escape. Up a long drive and you may need to wash your car later!. Set in a farm with spectacular views. Lots of vineyards close by and restaurants in the towns on either side. The owners had a drink with us in the evening and they made us feel very welcome. They live in the building next door so you don't get the feeling of being in someone's house.

Thank you for your review. I'm glad you felt that you have your privacy due to the fact that we live seperate to the Lodge. We enjoy getting to know our guests during "Happy Hour" and again over breakfast; however the remainder of the time you are there to enjoy and make the most of each others company and the facilities.
Hope to see you back here sometime in the future.
Cheers!
Susan

I organised a secret wedding at the Matakana Country Lodge. Proposal in the morning, wedding in the afternoon. Susan was a great host. The venue was set up, contingencies in place and she even went ahead with a few extras for the guests.
We had the sun shine at the perfect moment and we held a ceremony overlooking a huge landscape.
We stayed the night and the next morning after breakfast and leaving we looked back and couldn't fault a thing.

Hi Darrin
When you first contacted us regarding the wedding I did not take you seriously. Who in their right mind would try proposing and getting married on the same day? You pulled it off brilliantly and we really enjoyed being a part of your big day.
May you have a long and happy life together. We look forward to welcoming you back for your anniversary in 12 months time.
Cheers!

As a place to unwind, relax and slow down, this is an excellent choice. It is so quiet and dark at nighttime (and comfortable) that you're bound to sleep well. We're not huge people people -- but Susan is, and she made it easy to chat with the other lovely couple staying. We felt very pampered.

One minor points & 2 suggestions:
The plumbing makes some odd noises, but only when in use.
A plan, showing the location of the various rooms in the lodge, would be helpful when choosing a room.
Please mention on the room card that there is free unlimited WiFi. We didn't know that was available until we got home again.

Room Tip: All 3 rooms look great, have excellent views, bathrooms and beds. In order, from the spa pool and pa...

Thank you for your feedback - nice to hear you felt comfortable even though you are not normally people who would socialise with people you did not know. "Happy Hour" gives guests the opportunity to get to know each other in a relaxed environment, that way if you happen to pass them in the hallway or bump into each other in the kitchen or TV loungde you don't feel ackward.
I will get Garth to look at the plumbing in your room. A map on the website of the Lodge layout is a great idea, it's on my list of things to do.
There are signs in each room regarding the internet with password details but unfortunately yours had been placed in the side table drawer - my apologies.
We hope to see you back here sometime in the future.
Cheers!

We wanted to experience a bit more of NZ and liked the looks of the Matakana Coast booking two nights at Matakana Country Lodge. The house is situated at the end of the road which reminded us of our farm in Australia providing us with a quiet place to relax and admire the stunning views and surrounding gardens.
All the rooms are beautifully appointed and have everything you might need including a fluffy robe to put on after your shower. And in the evening sitting down to drinks and nibbles before heading out to experience the local cuisine and in the morning Susan served a sumptuous breakfast to kick start your day. Susan also provided us with who fantastic local knowledge which is invaluable when you are from another country visiting.
We would highly recommend the Lodge to anyone who wants to experience great hospitality, wonderful views and peaceful surroundings.
Thank you again Susan and Garth we look forward to staying again sometime when we visit NZ

Room Tip: We stayed in the Chardonnay room and it had views of the gardens and outdoor area just lovely

Thank you for your review. A number of our Australian guests feel right at home in our "Queenslander" style Lodge.
We are glad you made the effort to get out of the city and experience the Matakana region and all it has to offer.
We hope to see you back here sometime in the future when you next head across the ditch on business and are able to tack a few extra days onto your itinerary.
cheers!

We stayed here for a total experience weekend and both Susan and Garth were the perfect hosts. Beautiful location, peaceful beyond comparison. Susan took us around and showed us the value of local knowledge. We had an experience second to none and believe you will too.
Thanks again Susan and Garth.

Garth and I really enjoyed your company and I certainly had fun playing tour guide, it makes me appreciate on a regular basis just how many wonderful things the region has to offer. Next time you're up this way I will tailor an itinierary that showcases all of the activities you didn't have time for this time around.
Take care.
Cheers!

Of our 4 weeks in NZ, this was THE BEST!! Even in the rain, everything was perfect. All rooms are spacious and clean. The warm pool and hot tub were a welcomed treat after a long day of travel. The gardens are amazing and the views from the top of the mountain are spectacular. Susan and Garth were so helpful and friendlly - true ambassadors for the town of Matakana. We brought in our own food and cooked a great steak supper - the kitchen has everything one needs! - and more. It was a wonderful way to spend time with our family - we all felt like we were living the life of the rich and famous! I would highly recommend this lodge for anyone needing a few days of pampering, but if you only have one night - do experience it!

Garth and I are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us, albeit brief. It was lovely to hear that Canadian accent again and thanks for skyping your family to show us the snow they are experiencing back in Winnipeg - that is something I don't miss.
We hope you enjoyed your stay in Whangamata - the weather certainly improved. Safe travels.
Cheers!

We had a one night stay here in February and really wished we had been able to stay longer - more so when we got to our next destination - Rotarua - which we didn't like at all. The Lodge is just superb and ticks all the boxes - beautiful house very tastefully furnished; lovely bedroom with en suite bathroom, big fluffy towels; great little swimming pool, perfect for a dip after a long day driving, sightseeing or wine tasting; charming interesting hosts; pre-dinner drinks and nibbles on the patio; terrific breakfasts on the terrace; oh and the most fantastic 360 degree views. If you are planning to visit anywhere in this area, you won't find anywhere better. It is simply blissful.

Thank you for your kind words. Although we have owned and operated the lodge for just over 3 years now, we still love to sit and enjoy the views from the terrace with our guests during "Happy Hour" and after breakfast.
Glad you got to enjoy all of the facilities including the pool. Nothing like a dip after a long drive, especially on our NZ roads which can be tricky to say the least.
Shame you didn't like Rotorua - I'm guessing it was the smell!
We hope to welcome you back sometime in the future.
Cheers!
