“stunning B & B in tranquil setting”
Reviewed 20 February 2014

During a weekend wander in the countryside we came upon Sugarloaf Lodge at Matakana and stayed two nights in what can ony be described as a perfect place for a weekend getaway. The room was large, well appointed and everything was spotless. The hosts were charming and helpful and breakfast was substantial. It is very close to Matakana village and all the amenities there, and Omaha Beach is a short drive away. Thoroughly recommended.

We needed to get out of the city and smell the roses and Sugarloaf Lodge provided exactly what we were after. Peace, rural and panoramic beauty...........and quiet. Our hosts respected every aspect of our stay and the accommodation was 5 Star. Wonderfully comfortable beds, beautiful ensuite and subtle furnishings. And thank you Allan for the wine & nibbles on arrival - a wonderful night's sleep was enhanced by a leisurely home grown breakfast overlooking the panoramic rural splendour of Matakana and Omaha enhanced by local knowledge from our hosts.
Overall I came away feeling relaxed and extremely pleased with our choice of a getaway. Thank you both. Robina&John Morton

Room Tip: Outside would be my preference for privacy but all are lovely.

We stayed for an evening to attend a wedding in Matakana.

The lodge is in a very peaceful location with wonderful views and welcoming hosts who provide a tasty breakfast. Very quiet at night so you get an excellent sleep!

Centrally located with easy access to Matakana and all it's delights.

I'm very sorry to say this was not value for money at $300 per night and it wasn’t even clean. There were runs down the outside of the toilet and the inside of the lid. The shower screen was not clean and the throw on the bed needed washing too.
We had taken some fruit and wanted to cut a melon but there were no plates or dishes.
There was no privacy as people kept dropping by and we were told to have breakfast in their kitchen where they stood watching over us making us feel very uncomfortable.
If you want to chill out and watch a movie for an hour don’t go here they have no SKY.
On the plus side the view was lovely, the bed comfortable and very quiet at night.
Overall we felt watched over and uncomfortable and won’t be going again.

Room Tip: Only two rooms and owners pester too much so rated service terrible as made to feel we were in their...

We can only apologise for the cleanliness - we are generally most particular, but we have had the busiest summer in our existence although this should not be used as an excuse. The room has been completely stripped and cleaned again this morning.
With regard to the lack of utensils, crockery and sharp knives in the room – we are not a motel, however in the past we have found that guests have been comfortable to ask for anything they need from crockery, extra cutlery, barbeques etc. We again apologise for that.
For the lack of privacy – our format has been since we have been in business is to bring a platter of hors d’oeuvres and a couple of glasses local of wine to our guests in their room, at this point we ask what time and what they would like for breakfast; some guests like to chat at length at this point, some not.
Breakfast is served in our house. The room is a living/dining/kitchen area. Again, our format since being in business is to chat to the guests at this point. We find they enjoy finding out about us, as we do about them. This is why, we understand, they have chosen to stay in a bed and breakfast rather than a motel or hotel. However normally we respect their desire for privacy and apologise if we didn't in your case.
Regarding SKY – not we do not have SKY and as you will have noted it is not mentioned on our website, but we have a DVD machine, great restaurants and three fantastic cinemas in Matakana.
We are sorry you found the experience disappointing. However some European guests who stayed the following night said Sugarloaf Lodge was the best B&B they had stayed in during their five weeks in New Zealand.

This B&B is set high up on rolling hills that facilitate excellent views over the eastern coastline. From start of finish the accommodation was home-like and provided large rooms that had been thoroughly cleaned. The breakfast consisted of a limited but very good selection of home-made breakfast dishes.

I will start this by a complaint, the weekend went to fast! Words cannot describe how hospitable and relaxing our stay at Sugarloaf was. I made an out of the ordinary request and Vanessa and Allan did this no questios asked. The breakfast was top class, and a very comfortable bed. Would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone! The PR manager George (the dog) is great company also, along with the stunnnig view from the room. The little touches like the hors d'oeuvres and wine are great, and Allan even booked our dinner for us. Many thanks! We hope to stay again soon. Jessica and Julian

What a hidden gem! A beautiful, well appointed room with a private deck and stunning views. It's all so thoughtfully done, from the lovely shampoo and body lotion to the make up remover pads. The bed was comfortable and the room so welcoming I begrudged going out for dinner! Vanessa and Allan are brilliant hosts. A delightful bonus was the glass of wine and canapés which they brought us.
Breakfast was delicious - freshly squeezed orange juice, fruit salad and everything else one could want. My only regret is that it's too far from the UK to go back! I slept really well and left rejuvenated after only one night.
