Bassets Acre Holiday Apartments
Reviewed 10 January 2014

I really wanted to like Bassets Acre. It is pretty pricey - we paid just under £1000 for a week in August, so we had high expectations, but unfortunately they weren't met.

The biggest complaint is that there is no wi-fi at all in the apartment - even though Bassets Acre (and Tripadvisor) advertise the accommodation as having wi-fi. I think it's completely wrong to advertise something, knowing that it isn't true. We were told that some people's devices pick it up, whilst others don't. (Absolutely not good enough.) None of our devices (an apple laptop, ipad and iphone) picked up wi-fi, and i see on here that others have had similar experiences. In fact, another holiday maker from a different apartment also couldn't access wi-fi in his apartment and he had to go to the games room to try to pick it up. The games room is a small, dusty, dark room that is unpleasant to spend time in, so that doesn't help matters.

It was also very annoying not having a mobile phone signal the whole time we were there. My partner and I are on different networks and neither of us picked up a signal. I think Bassets Acre should state that this might be the case on their website. For some people a mobile phone signal is essential.

The television was small, and the picture, annoyingly, froze for a few seconds on a quite a few occasions. It was apparent that there is a problem with the digital connection.

The other major problem was the size of the apartment. It is TINY. We felt very cramped and had to keep some of our stuff outside on the balcony as a way of trying to keep the apartment clean. There is a very small sofa and no other living room seating (only chairs for a small breakfast table). In the second bedroom, there is only room for small bunk beds - there is no wardrobe. This bedroom is more of a cupboard than a bedroom! And in the main bedroom there is only just enough space to squeeze round the sides of the bed (if you were large, I think you would have problems).

The shower in the bathroom is weak, and the sink is TINY - it's like one of those very small sinks you sometimes find in a small toilet in a restaurant. It also needs re-decorating.

The fridge, like everything else in the apartment, was very small and so we struggled to squeeze provisions into it and the floor in the kitchen area is carpeted (very odd!).

There is also no washing machine. The information for the property on Tripadvisor implies there is (it says 'washer'). In fact, a 'service wash' at £5 a go (£7 if dried too) is offered. Not good value in my view.

It seems to me that the very high prices charged for this accommodation are because of the outside space. It is great having access to a pool and a hot tub, but even this wasn't quite as nice as I was hoping. The shallow end of the pool isn't very shallow, so not very good for small children, and the water was quite cold. Also, unlike the impression given by the photo on the website, even on very hot days, the dome cover was kept on. The hot tub too could have been hotter.

The gardens and viewing platform other reviewers mention are all very nice. It seems to me quite a lot of thought and money has been invested in the outside space. However, this doesn't make up for the poor quality of the accommodation. I realise nothing can be done about the smallness of Badgers Watch, but a complete re-decoration, sorting out the problems with wi-fi and installing a power shower would help improve things.

At the moment the accommodation really isn't worth the price. I have stayed in far superior apartments in Cornwall for less money. In fact we had a second week in Cornwall and enjoyed a much better, more spacious, beautifully decorated apartment (with a power shower and jacuzzi bath) for more than £200 less than Badger's Watch.

Room Tip: Don't stay in Badger's Watch!

Badgers Watch, is one ouf our best loved apartments which has 90% re bookings
We find it incredible to believe your comments which are insulting & deeply upsetting for us.

This is one of those finds where you find that those seemingly insurmountable challenges that plague our everyday lives become insignificant. The sea air and the peaceful haven have made this a real treasure.
The owners were particularly friendly and welcoming and I was able to relax ...and have peace from my normal busy life with 2 very young children ...4yrs and 16mth old baby... with a dip in the pool and the luxurious spa. The children loved the garden and made the most of the indoor facilities too with toys and games when the weather was not pleasant. The proximity to the seaside and the beach was a great advantage. It meant that we did not have to take the car with us .
Both children loved it. I hope to revisit this gem again next year.

We have just returned from a weeks stay at Bassets Acre. We booked quite late and though Portreath wasnt our choice of destination it was a great place to locate ourselves to discover Cornwall. Portreath is a small village near St ives and within a 30-40 min drive to some great sites.

Upon arrival we were me by Pat and Richard (the owners) and shown our apartment. everything was as advertised, our apartment was Sea Whisper a one bedroomed self contained apartment which was very clean and had everything we required. There was a pull out bed in the living room, though we put our 4 yo son on an air bed that we brought for ease.

The covered pool is excellent for rainy days or after a day out and the hot tub is a great place for the adults and older children to get a relaxing soak. There is a games room as well that can keep the little ones content for some time as well as the garden with a climbing frame/slide and table tennis.

There are several BBQ dotted around the location, but check out the lovely rear garden and the summer house with BBQ and seating for great views of the sea and the wonderful sunsets.

Everything else is really covered in the other reviews posted here.

Internet wasn't available in our apartment but is in the games room, and Portreath like most of Cornwall has poor mobile phone signals, though a little inconvenient when planning trips we quickly got into the vibe of getting back to the good old days and talking to other guests and Pat and Richard who gave great advice on where to visit and the best way of doing things. Like don't think about driving into St Ives and get the park and ride train from Lelant.

If you like golf visit the Tehidy Golf Club (5 min drive) for a lovely course, and go for 5pm tee off times for deals on buggies and green fees but check there is no tourny on.

If you want to eat in one of the three pubs in Portreath then check out the specials at Bassets Arms for fresh fish.

if we ever come down to cornwall again would def stay here. perfect in every way!

Room Tip: Call Pat and talk to her aout your requirements, she will def help you get the most out of your trip...

2013 is our fifteenth year at Bassets Acre, and every time we visit we are made to feel part of the family. Our children (now 33 & 28) still want to come with their partners. Lovely apartments with stunning views and gardens; so much to do and see in and around Portreath. Swimming, surfing, fishing and much more. Relax in the evenings with a BBQ and a bottle of wine and watch the sun sink slowly down to the West. Pam and Richard are wonderful hosts, and we are already making plans for a return visit in 2014; it can't come soon enough.

We stayed in Garden Spring and had a lovely time. The apartment was very clean and spacious and had everything we needed. Cleaning materials and binbags were provided, as were certain staples, such as salt. Small things like that do make a difference. The apartment had everything we needed. There is no dishwasher, but we ate out more often than not, so it wasn`t a huge problem. There is wifi, but we found we could only use it in our bedroom, which was a minor inconvenience. There were toys provided for the children which were lovely. Our 2 year old adored the sand pit. The pool, hot tub and gardens were terrific. Clearly a lot of work has gone into the garden, which is beautiful. We had a washing line, with pegs provided, which was very handy. Pam and Richard were always on hand, smiling, pleasant and welcoming- perfect hosts.

We stayed at Bassets Acre the first week of June 2013. Both badly needing a refreshing unwind from hectic jobs. We left (unfortunately) feeling so invigorated after one of the best holidays we have ever had.
A big thank you to Pam and Richard who really are the best hosts. Nothing is too much trouble and they are extremely good company.
We stayed in the Sea Whisper apartment which was really comfortable, quiet and had everything you would need on a holiday.
We swam in the pool each day and although the weather was glorious all week the blue bubble dome over the pool area means you can use the pool and sun loungers even in the rain.
The hot tub in the Summer House is a fantastic addition, but the stunning elevated deck area with BBQ's and great seating area enable a view directly out into the bay. This produced (over a glass of Claret or two) some of the finest sunsets we have ever seen.
If you want a relaxing holiday in a beautiful small bay which does not attract large crowds, in a lovely period building, with fantastic facilities, hosted by two lovely people, this is the place for you. Need I say any more other than we will return.
