“Wedding at Gwel-An-Mor”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2014

I have just had my wedding in the tepee at Gwel-An-Mor. I have to say it was absolutely fantastic. Great venue, value for money and the food cooked by Joe was out of this world, a real talking point of the day from my guests. Liz was the lady that organised the event and was an absolute pleasure to deal with, efficient, organised & extremely personable. She made the day totally special. Well done Gwel-An-Mor a special thanks to Liz, a credit to the place. I would thoroughly recommend this venue to anyone.

We travelled to Gwel an Mor for a short break at the end of July. My wife, dog and I have visited a number of times before and keep returning because we always enjoy our visits. This time we wanted a few days to relax, a change of scenery and to get out and about walking with the dog.

We purchased the breakfast package, which was all ready in the kitchen when we arrived; excellent local produce and very tasty. As always the staff were helpful and the lodge had everything we needed. It was very clean and well equipped.

On the first night we had take away pizza from the restaurant; great if you don't want to cook after a long journey. We used the walking leaflet in the lodge and found some great local walks direct from the site.

Later in the week we found a dog friendly beach, which was quiet and had some incredible sand dunes; only about 6 miles drive from Gwel an Mor.

As a bit of a 'foodie' we absolutely LOVED the Terrace. We have eaten in the restaurant on previous visits over the last 7 years and this is honestly the best the restaurant has ever been. The new Chef, Joe, is doing an amazing job and the menu is excellent. We can recommend the Terrace burger; I have to say it is one of the best restaurant burgers I have ever eaten! Scallops are great for starter and the fish selection is brilliant. My chocoholic wife loved the fondant dessert with homemade ice cream.

Another excellent stay and we will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: All lodges we have stayed in have been excellent.

Where to start? What an amazing place to explore Cornwall from!

We stayed for a short break at one of the new residences . Jaw dropping attention to detail and the quality of the build is outstanding. The facilities within the dwelling are equal to what one may expect to find in a five star hotel. Every conceivable item is provided from cutlery to bathrobes . The fitted kitchen boasts high spec/high tech appliances. Wonderful ambiance throughout each room and decor is tasteful as well as relaxing. Outside the hot tub already filled and set to perfect temperature... One simply had to hop in and bubble away the trials and aches of a long drive. Not up to cooking after a long and hot day we opted to try The Terrace restaurant where we discovered a wonderful menu which has been designed to appeal to any taste. Reasonably priced and more than generous portions ( couldn't finish the pud)

All of the staff are warm and genuinely friendly and nothing is too much trouble. It is self evident that all are trained to exacting standards.

The entire complex is set out beautifully with plenty to do... fantastic to see children actually playing!!! No batteries required!

Give yourself a treat and try Cornwall from here!

Room Tip: Not a problem when electing to stay at one of the 'Residences' as they have been designed in...

We have just returned home to Dublin, from a week in Gwel an Mor, having stayed in one of the three bed Residence lodges, with our two kids (seven and four years old), and my parents.
All in all, we had a great time. The manager, Nico and his staff were fantastic; everyone we met was friendly and helpful, from the ladies at reception to the guy who came to check the hot tub each day. I have travelled a great deal, to some really special resorts, but I have never met a manager like Nico before, he genuinely went out of his way to make sure everything was going smoothly with our stay. We ordered some groceries with Tesco, which were waiting for us when when we arrived and were much appreciated after a long journey from Bristol Airport.
We ate in the on-site restaurant, The Terrace, one evening and the food was delicious. It’s not a posh or high brow place, it’s an informal, relaxed family eatery, which is exactly what you want when travelling with kids. The menu comprised of simple food done well, and there was plenty on offer for everyone, including vegetarian options. My little son loved the chocolate pudding!
On the whole the facilities on site are very good, with a gym and a nice spa, as well as lots of nice walking trails. My only slight whinge would be that the pool is a bit on the small side and always seemed to be very busy. I also think the resort could benefit from perhaps something like a games/toy/arts & crafts room, and maybe some more opportunities for sport, like a basketball net or the like. Gwel an Mor is growing with the development of The Residence, so hopefully they will bear in mind that as they welcome more guests, they may need to expand their facilities somewhat.
The highlight of our stay there was our trip to Feadon Farm. We did the ‘Meet the Animals’ experience and it was absolutely brilliant. We went along expecting a kind of petting zoo experience, what we got was more like a behind-the-scenes tour of a zoo with Gary, who was full of enthusiasm and great with the kids. We got up close and personal with all sorts of animals, including a three month old fox cub called Forrest Stump, who my two are still talking about.
The lodge itself was comfortable, modern and very tastefully decorated with comfy beds. The views out to sea were lovely and the whole atmosphere was peaceful and relaxing. The hot tub is a great extra touch and we got a lot of use out of it!
We had some nice weather and so we managed to make the most of the BBQ and ate on the deck a few times. We also visited St Ives, Truro, Hayle, as well as a great adventure playground just 10 minutes drive away in Heartlands.
Location wise, Gwel an Mor was a great base to explore the area. I can’t imagine you would find much better for an enjoyable family holiday in Cornwall, and we hope to be back soon.

Sinead,

Thanks for such a great write up, although I am a little disappointed having read it that we did not get 5 stars, but glad you are intending to return to give us a chance to capture a fifth one!

We do have plans for further activities over the next few years, we are building a golf course presently, and will be building an indoor activity area soon as well.

I will pass on your lovely comments to Nico, and our restaurant as well.

See you soon, I hope.

We stayed in one of the VIP lodges for a 3 night break, and what can I say, it was just perfect! All the staff are so helpful and greet you with a smile. You really felt they took an interest in all their guests, asking if you had a lovely stay and there to answer any questions you might have. We met the owner and he was really lovely, and recommended visiting Forest Stump the resident Fox at the farm!!!
They have thought of everything! The lodge is fully equipped with all the kitchen utensils you would need, there are so many towels, and the dressing gowns are so comfy!!! You can even borrow DVDs from reception. Also free wifi in every lodge!!
The jacuzzi was already set up to the perfect temperature and was just lovely after a long drive to the lodge, ideally it was for 2 but perfect for 4 to sit and chat the night away!!
The spa facilities are clean and great for a little work out whilst on holiday.
The farm was such a lovely touch to the holiday, to get to interact with the animals on some of the activities as well as just walking past to say hello to the reindeers!!
The local beaches are just fantastic and worth a trip to carbis bay, just 20 minutes drive.
Great for all ages, we even did some crab fishing!!!
If you are going to stay, you MUST try out the restaurant in the castle - Carn Brea Castle. Be warned you need to book first and must take cash as they don't have card machines, but what a view and such lovely service too!!!

Room Tip: I would spend a little more to get your own hot tub, your on holiday - might as well make the most o...

Dear Calamity,

Thanks for a lovely response, and such great comments about everything, especially our staff, I know I am biased but I really think this is the big difference at Gwel an Mor, there are many lovely places in Cornwall but our staff really are the best.

They care about our guests and they care about Gwel an Mor, I'm always proud when I hear words like yours.

Of course the farm on site is amazing, and i am so pleased you took the time to do one of the many activities we offer there, I still learn something new every time I go there, and meeting little "Forest Stump" as you now know is a total pleasure and very special.

Thank you and come back soon!
