“Delightful hotel!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2014

Spontaneous decision to go away for the night to Ludlow. Although Old Downton Lodge was quite a way out from Ludlow Centre, it was well worth the trip. We stayed in room 8, which had a lovely old four poster bed. The room was very comfortable and tastefully decorated. We had no problems at all with service and were content to enjoy ourselves without over-attention. The breakfast was excellent. We would recommend this hotel to anybody wanting a quiet and luxurious stay in Ludlow and its beautiful surrounding countryside. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Lovely room close to restaurant, lovely old four-poster bed with excellent large bathroom.

This hotel was an experience of two parts. We liked the accommodation but found the service less satisfactory. Our room was not serviced particularly well and we were left with 4 wet towels with nowhere to dry them, the bed was superficially made and then we had to remake it, the toiletries were not replenished either. We requested replacement towels and 2 were supplied. Breakfast on our final day was chaotic and was being frantically prepared after the guests arrived at 8.45 for an 8.30am start! We would not recommend the pancakes or scrambled eggs.
Despite these criticisms we found our room comfortable and we enjoyed our break nevertheless.
If the management change their housekeeping, provide a larger TV (to suit the room size) and make provision for hair drying facilities close to a mirror etc we would feel more inclined to return.

Room Tip: Room 2 is one of the best if you don't need a walk in shower.

Ideally situated for a get together with friends from Shrewsbury, we could not have chosen a more peaceful, tranquil location. Everything about Old Downton Lodge is perfect. Beautiful rooms, attentive staff and wonderful food. A gem of a find. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Website is top rate and has a virtual tour which allows you to navigate through the property and view bedrooms and joint rooms.

A group of us booked all the rooms for the weekend. I had room7 which was spacious with four poster bed. All rooms were of high specification and thoroughly cleaned each day. Everything about the place oozed quality. The beautiful courtyard garden for sitting in, the dining hall with tapestries on the wall and the very comfy long "museum" sitting room with a well stocked honesty bar at the end were furnished to high standards. Mobile reception zero but good wifi .

Excellent breakfast. While the cooked breakfast was top rate, the fresh fruit salad, selection of fresh breads and homemade strawberry jam gave it a different class. We had a formal dinner on one night for the group. The chef gave us some interesting combinations of tastes in the dishes which worked to give a great meal. I had pigeon breasts followed by lamb .Delicious! NB Individual bookings have a different menu. Nothing about this place is cheap, including room rate but it is quality.

Room Tip: Can see rooms on virtual tour on website

We went for dinner on July 5th. Both the food and the surroundings were stunningly good. The Norman dining hall is atmospheric, service delightful and the flavours were a real treat. We will be back (often, hopefully!).

After reviewing various hotels/restaurants in the area I was looking for something special for our 17 year wedding anniversary. The recent reviews for this restaurant/accomodation read extremly well and convinced me this was the right place. Even though I had high expectations of what to expect I was completely blown away by the whole experience. The standard of accomadation was top draw, the seven course taster menu was to die for ( been in a few Michelin star restarants and this was as good as any) and the staff were extremly polite, attentive and friendly. It was a perfect mix of friendly, proffessional and not too stuffy. I thought the whole package represented exceptional value for money. What was also a very pleasant surprise is the selection of excellent reasonably priced wines. This establishment is truly one of the best we have been to in recent years. Definitely planning a visit back and thankyou for making our anniversay weekend away special.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 2

A beautiful hotel in amazing surroundings. The rooms are spacious and decorated to a very high standard, as is everywhere else in this hotel. We had the taster menu, which was delicious and afterwards retired to the lovely sitting room/bar. The staff were professional, helpful and polite.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Fascinating. Intriguing. Mesmeric. Pure escapism just seven miles from Ludlow, in some respects, Old Downton Lodge defies description: It is not a hotel, nor is it really a bed and breakfast or a restaurant with rooms. Each of the nine bedrooms are unforgettable – stylishly converted from historic farm buildings surrounding a flower bedecked courtyard, each is quirky, luxurious, packed with history and designed to make you smile. The hospitality is relaxed and genuine. The food – served in a dramatic dining hall - is exceptional and the wine list inspired. ... more   less
