A beautiful place to stay...

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 30 Jan 2020
It's a beautiful place to stay - the location, the resort, the staff, the villas - the views (and not just of the monastery). Spent one night here and thoroughly appreciated it. Everything here cost more than anywhere else in Myanmar, but it is something of a special one, and like anywhere, such privilege costs. Would definitely recommend a stay if you are contemplating it. The views, moments and photo opportunities were wonderful.

I was delighted to get thi incredible location ..the stunning view make you feel blessed.

I was a bit upset by the managment and the super basic
Offer of food . They charge for mineral water and many other little things .

You will go or have gone to Myanmar, so you've made the decision that tourism here is okay, and you're a Westerner (or Global-North person from the East) who has enough money to spend $20 on dinner. So don't whine about either. This is a very nice resort with wonderful views and good villas, and well worth the $85 per night (no monastery view but big villa in this case).

I should say that both coming and staying here is essential for the Mt. Popa experience - and I mean the mountain as well as the rock. Only from here can you see the latter as in all the famous pictures; only staying here can you see it as it changes during the day. At least one night should be spent here; it's just part of the experience.

I'd like to enthusiastically recommend the massage, and here the Mt. Popa signature massage ($25), too. I had serious back problems and booked an hour to solve them (so not wellness but physio). The masseur, an older gentleman who unfortunately smelled a bit of tobacco, did the classic Burmese knocking combined with some stretching, which was serious but not as hard as expected. I felt good afterwards though. But lo and behold, next morning the back-pain was gone, really gone, and it hasn't returned since. Since my issue is chronic and occasionally flares up, this is important stuff and for me, this was worth coming here to begin with.

One more item that has been pointed out before but is worth restating in 2020: There is NO WIFI in the villas, just pool and reception areas are covered, and NORMAL SIMS DON'T WORK EITHER, except those by local provider MPT, which however does not have a booth in Mandalay Airport where most visitors get theirs. Take it as therapy as well. :-)

Anyway - great air, waking up refreshed from birds chirping, great views, and all for bargain prices (come on, you know it's true) - so what's there not to love?

The views are undoubtedly lovely, and the temperatures are moderate because the hotel is at elevation. But in almost 3 weeks in Myanmar, this hotel was the only place I went with the only food and drinks priced in US dollars. Even compared to fancy places in Yangon, it was expensive. A gin and tonic, without lime, and with barely any gin, was $9 US dollars.

The only internet is at the restaurant or pool, and my cell phone had no service.

On the bright side, the room was nice, and there was lots of hot water. Breakfast was good.

Decided to stay one night at the resort and walked to Mount Popa temple during the day. There is a walking path which the hotel staffs recommended the guests to walk to the temple from the hotel. But honestly the walking path is more like a jungle trail and I think the hotel should stop recommending it. It was cold at night when I visited. Not much activities at night in the resort. I had tea at the restaurant and enjoy the night time. Food wise the quality is good with wide selection and the staff services are excellent.

We stayed here for a night en route to Bagan. It was a great little hotel with fanatic views across the valley to the pagoda. We ate in the restaurant and the food was excellent. There are lots of steps at the hotel and the paths were slippery in the wet weather. We had were in room 702 probably one of the better rooms.
