This is an amazing hotel for the price, with all the good points everyone has mentioned (owner, cleanliness, atmosphere). However, we were disappointed with our 'side sea view', which was probably the worst in the whole hotel. While the room was spotless, the blankets were dirty and stained, the hot water wasn't that hot and the shower leaked all over the floor no matter what you did to prevent it.

It was also a great pity that the restaurant had closed when we got there in the third week of October. We'd been looking forward to that so much!

It's true that light sleepers will have a problem. Even with ear plugs I found the day and night barking and howling of the dog tied up outside the ground floor was really annoying, and the noise from other residents does echo around the building.

Breakfast consists of the most surprising things, which we really enjoyed after the first shock. Mashed potatoes, spaghetti, wonderful roasted vegetables, spare ribs......you name it, it was there one day or another!

The care and consideration of the owner and family really shows.

All in all, a memorable experience, excellent for the price, but not perfect!

We stayed at the Alexis Hotel in early October and were blown away by the amount of hospitality we received. Theo is a bright, incredibly hard working, caring person who will go out of his way to make sure your stay is nothing short of perfect. It was clear that he adores his work! We had our questions answered and endless help setting up car rentals, bike rentals, and boat excursions. I would highly suggest taking the boat excursion to Gramvousa & Balos. The staff is very friendly and the restaurant was outstanding! We were given free raki upon arrival, and a free appetizer and more raki with dinner :)...it was fantastic! The rooms are excellent. Our's had a balcony with an excellent view of the oceanfront and town. The bathroom had everything you need and was very, very clean. After our stay we were shocked that we didn't pay twice the price. We would suggest that anyone going anywhere nearby, take the opportunity to stay at the Alexis Hotel! You'll be doing yourself a huge favor!

Room Tip: Go for the oceanfront view and don't miss a meal at the restaurant!!!

We decided to book the hotel after checking many positive reviews. Unfortunately, our stay was not pleasant. It was true that the manager and his family were very helpful and friendly to all guests, the sea view from our room was stunning day and night, and WiFi was available through the building (no TV in room). However, we had some negative experiences.

First of all, the building was just like a theater. All noises from ground floor and basement kept echoing on to the second floor. Some evenings, the restaurant offered music until late night, and we could not sleep until it finished. Also, we were woken up in the middle of night when a guest kept knocking someone's room door (not hard knock) on the first floor, and dog barking in early mornings. Thus, if you are noise-sensitive, be careful.

Also, when we stayed there, temperature in evening was below 20C, and was quite cool. When we tried to use blanket, we were shocked how filthy it was. There were so many unknow stains on both blankets, and looked like not being washed for years. We had a replacement, but they were also filthy with many stains. After using them (no choice!) for one night, my wife and I had irritating skin and skin bites (nearly 10 bites each by the end of our stay). We were not sure if the irritation and bites came from the beds or blankets. But it was clearly different from mosquito's bite.

Furthermore, even though the temperature in evenings was cool, the shower temperature was not adjustable. It had only "cold-ish" warm water. We turned on a hot tap only, but no difference. According to the manager, the water was heated by solar panel, and not boiler. It might be hot enough in the summer, but too cold for Spring/Autumn. Both of us were nearly having cold.

Breakfast was just OK. It would be nice if omelette/sausage/bacon were warm or at leaste re-heated (they were cold every day). Also, breakfast started from 08.30, you might have to miss it if you have early-start.

Overall, our stay was not "happy stay" and will not stay there again.
(I'm sorry if you are disappointed by my negative comments. However, this is what we actually experienced.)

Glad to hear the staff was helpful and you loved the sea view from the room!
It is unfortunate you had some negative experiences...Alexis hotel is not for everyone.
The music is offered for your enjoyment, an experience of Greek music and culture.
Mosquitoes are common in Crete, the citronella candles in the room should do the work!
Take advantage of the packed breakfast offering if you are an early riser!!

Second time at this hotel and just as nice as last year. The room had a lovely view both of the town and the mountains. We saw the sun rise over the mountains! Theo, the manager, is so kind and is really taking care of his guests. The room was cleaned every day and the towels and the sheets were changed several times during the week. It is wonderful to walk down the hill to the beach! We love this part of Crete and this hotel! Already planning to come back next year!

We initially chose to stay at the Alexis because of the rave reviews about how friendly and helpful the staff were. Now, back home after our first visit to Crete, I felt compelled to add this review to let any other 'considering' clients know that EVERY one of the praises you'll read here in others' reviews,... are ALL true. I don't think we could possibly have had a lovelier introduction to the joys of Chania and Crete. Thank you so much to Theo, and all the staff at the Alexis. If I have the good fortune to be able to return to Crete, we will definitely stay here again. A wonderful, warm, friendly 'home-away-from-home'.

Room Tip: Definitely worth asking for a room with a sea view. It's such a a lovely way to start each new m...

I can't say enough good things about Hotel Alexis and its people. The sub text on the business card for the hotel ( with the managers cell phone number in case you get lost) says " your home in Crete". How true. I was travelling alone and found the daily chatter with Yianni and Georgia, the restaurant and bar's staff/hosts/light entertainment great at the end of the day. They patiently answered my questions about life in Crete and are great fun.
Don't go to Theo's restaurant if you are on a diet. That man can cook. Don't bother eating anywhere else unless you want to punish yourself.
The rooms are clean and tidy. The bed was comfortable. The view from the balcony amazing. How many sunset photos do you need??? The shower curtains get you a bit but that is standard for that part of the world.
Hotel Alexis is great value. You will feel comfortable and at home.
Close to a good beach and close but out of the busyness of down town Chania
I will be back Theo.

We booked to stay for 4 days in October 2013. On arrival, the hotel manager was charming and extremely welcoming, going out of his way to show us on the local map how to get around the locality.
The room itself was as advertised: basic but clean. No toiletries in the bathroom, but the citronella candle in the bedroom was a nice touch. There was a lovely view out on the balcony too, looking down to the sea on one side.
The nearest beach was 10 minutes walk away (although there's little there: the financial crisis has destroyed the bars and restaurants that once lined up alongside the first beach) and Chania's Old Town (which is gorgeous and well worth a trip) is 20 minutes walk or a short bus ride away.
Unfortunately we found the paper thin walls around our room too much to contend with: we were staying on the ground floor and therefore heard everyone's comings and goings throughout the day and night, which kept us awake.
We were also unfortunate enough to have our room situated next door to that of a rather badly behaved toddler, who spent most nights screaming and running up and down the corridor, throwing toys around as he went. Not the hotel's fault certainly, but with the thin walls it made sleep impossible.
The manager, when we informed him that we were having to cut our trip short because of the noise levels, couldn't have been more apologetic, and insisted on paying our money back for the remainder of the stay, which was very kind. He seemed genuinely upset that we were calling time on our stay at his hotel, which he clearly adores.
We didn't get a chance to see the restaurant, but the reviews from other diners we saw sounded promising.
All in all, not bad for a budget trip, but bring your ear plugs if you're a light sleeper, and try and get a room on the higher floors.

Room Tip: ask for one on the higher floors.

Happy you enjoyed the sea views!
Sorry to hear you were troubled with noise...it really usually is very quiet here. Sometimes things like this is out of our control, like the screaming toddler! But I am happy to have had you as our guest even for the few days!
