“Magnificent butterflies, but in need of a little more tlc”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

We had a lovely time at Studley Grange today, the butterflies were absolutely stunning. The kids loved the fact that the butterflies were unafraid to come near and even land on you if you stood still enough. It is a fantastic opportunity to get close to these beautiful creatures which you would not otherwise get to see unless you are lucky enough to regularly holiday in the tropics! The meerkats were beautiful and the babies adorable. There were goats, geese and chickens that could be fed with bags of food purchased from the shop for £1. All the animals, birds, reptiles and butterflies look like they are well cared for, and the kids loved getting up close. There has obviously been investment recently, and the outside farm area is coming along nicely. My only criticism would be that the centre is a little rough round the edges. Unplanted plants left in too small pots, obviously dead plants and weeds have not been removed for some time, and the rabbit hutch could do with lick of paint. Recycling materials is all well and good, but it can be done without looking shabby. Visitors like to think they have had value for money, and a little more attention to detail is more likely to have people returning for repeat visits and recommending your venue to friends and family. I looked around for any information on volunteering groups but could find none. That said, I will be bringing my family again just to see the breathtaking butterflies. A good afternoon out, that could be made great with a little imagination.

“Very good - not sure what others found to complain about”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

I came here with 2 small children in the past week, and was very impressed. The butterflies are stunning, but we also enjoyed seeing the other animals, particularly the otters and meerkats. The assistant who did a talk at one of the 'feeding times' was very knowledgable, and we learned more here than we have at several other (much bigger) zoos that we have visited. I am keenly aware of animal welfare issues at zoos, but didn't see anything here that worried me at all.

My kids and I spent several happy hours here (with a break to go to the soft play area, and the Lego exhibition, which were both also good).

So pleased that you found what Studley Grange Butterfly World is all about – educating people about butterflies, animals and reptiles in an enjoyable, interactive environment where animal welfare is the priority. Come back and see us soon.

“Visited with service users”
Reviewed 11 August 2014

Myself and a colleague visited here today with 3 disabled adults we support. We really enjoyed seeing the animals and butterflies. We decided to stop for lunch at the café by the entrance and were really disappointed. Not only were a couple of the staff rude to us but we were unable to see a menu to find suitable choices for those we support.

We are pleased you enjoyed seeing our animals and butterflies but we are concerned about your comments regarding the rest of your visit. So that we can investigate this matter fully it would be really helpful if you could contact us direct so that we can better understand what happened.

“Don't bother...”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

After a previous unsuccessful visit a few years ago our kids were not that keen to return but having read about the 'considerable investment' from the manager's tripadvisor comments we felt we should give a local business another chance.

The butterflies are lovely but hardly 'Butterfly World'. The zoo area features small enclosures and is very run down and neglected. The children had looked forward to meeting the guinea pigs and rabbits so were very disappointed when this turned out to be being allowed only one stroke of a guinea-pig! There is some information about the animals but this is patchy and although this is school holiday season there were no staff on hand in the zoo or butterfly enclosures to answer questions, etc.

Swindon has a couple of really good farms and a world class wildlife park on its doorstep which we have visited again and again over the years. Unfortunately we won't be bothering to visit Butterfly World again.

More than 2,000 people visited us in the first week of August and they have thoroughly enjoyed their time here; having fun seeing our animals and butterflies, and praising our staff.

As previously – and accurately - stated we have invested in improvements this year and our enclosures are far from neglected; we recently had our zoo licence renewed without any difficulties; our animals (more than ever before) are happy and thriving; there are hundreds of butterflies and caterpillars here; and our staff are always on hand to help visitors. During school holidays there are always four keepers plus other staff working.

We would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this with you in private rather than through the medium of an online forum. Please contact us so that we can arrange a time to meet you and discuss your comments.

“fun day”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

Our 4 year old loves it here. We see the butterflies and animals then go and look round the small shops on site followed by time in the soft play. After we have a picnic lunch we have another look round butterflies and animals (as your ticket is for all day so you can go in more than once) before we go home.
