“God awful”
Reviewed 7 December 2013 via mobile

Hmmmmm... A "business" hotel in the back end of beyond. Ended up forced to stay due to a clash between a work party and a rubbish taxi company. From the miserable, incompetent, po-faced staff to the hilariously over priced bar (that'll be £10 for two watery Peronis) it was just [--].
Would I stay here again? Not if they paid me.
Would I come within 10 miles of the place? No.
Frankly, I'd rather sleep in the car.
Can't think of a single redeeming feature - JUST DON'T BOTHER.

Dear Trip Advisor Community,

Clearly this guest has had a bad night, but please don't accept this review as being a true reflection of Alexandra House.

We are situated in the Countryside, but are easily accessible and we are only 8 minutes away from Junction 16 of the M4.

Our Peroni is from Kegs which would be impossible to water down, and all our staff are trained to give the highest customer service.

Please read other reviews which give a more balanced response to what Alexandra House is like.

Kind Regards

Stayed two nights at the weekend - Generally very good. The room was lovely, the staff were friendly and efficient and the free use of the pool etc was included in the price.

On the downside the bar is relatively expensive for both drinks and bar food and there isnt an alternative within walking distance. The Hotel also has no Orange / EE or 3 Mobile network signal inside and an intermittent network signal outside. I appreciate that this isn't the Hotels fault but I feel that they should mention it on their website. The 'free wi-fi' worked well in the rooms but was a nuisance to set up and had to be requested rather than offered.

Would I stay again - no, unfortunately the lack of the mobile phone reception in my case is a deal breaker, I wouldn't have booked the stay if I had been aware of the issue beforehand. If I swap networks to one that works in the Hotel (o2 for example) then Yes.

Dear IanB,

Thanks for your comments on the Trip Advisor community, we are aware of the issues surrounding the coverage for mobile phone networks. We have great coverage for O2 and Vodafone, however the Orange Mast, which we are sat between, is only working at 25% capacity.
We are investigating this and looking into various solutions, for example, having an in house mast. We will ensure that this will be resolved.

I stay here for business quite often. The location is remote, but fine. For the price the rooms are pretty good - but the tv is small and selection of channels not great. Takes away from having a relaxing night in.

The lounge is fine but the the restaurant food is just not good. The breakfast buffet is really greasy and overcooked and the menu items just aren't great for the price. It seems like they could/should be able to make food that doesn't drive most out to eat.

The phone reception and wifi process are archaic. For a hotel that is primarily for business it doesn't make sense to not make the wifi more accessible. Phone reception seems a problem regardless of provider (I've tried 3!).

Hotel is clean and service is good, but given the isolation of its location it would be worth it for them to offer room amenities (tv!), communication coverage and quality of food so people didn't need to go offsite.

Dear Shelley H,

Thank you for your comments about your stay here at Alexandra House. I recently made the management decision, to have Free WiFi rather than upgrade all the televisions within the venue. This is rather than charging for WIFI. I have checked the statistics and per day over 200 users are accessing WIFI for free, therefore I believe the decision I made, was a correct one.
The comments you have made about our Breakfast service have been passed on to our Kitchen Team, we are always reviewing our standards, and our Kitchen Team always work hard to ensure all food is of a high quality with a variety of choice.

Kind Regards

Service: Receptionist, Restaurant Staff and Bar Staff all very friendly and helpful. The Reception Manager was superb.

Value: I have placed this as average, as this was a gift so I do not know the retail price of my stay.

Sleep Quality: Had a very good nights sleep, no noise disturbance.

Cleanliness: Can't fault

Location: Quite difficult location to travel to in M25 rush hour traffic

Rooms: Very spacious superior room with a king size bed. We had a complimentary bottle of wine, 2 cans of coke, 2 bottles of mineral water and mini box of chocolates in our room.

Spa: We didn't get chance to use the spa

Breakfast: The breakfast buffet refresh time was a little slow.

Room Tip: Superior Double Room

I stayed here whilst I was on a course in Swindon. First reaction was that it is a bit out of the way which is true. You either need a car or be prepared to take a taxi everywhere. But the hotel is very well equipped. It has a swimming pool and gym. I used the pool and it was never busy. It was well presented with a sauna and steam room. The reception areas are spacious and although there were lots of corporate events going on there was no shortage of quiet corners. The rooms are also spacious and well appointed. There was an iron, trouser press and good storage space. There was also an easy chair and desk and chair but the room was not overcrowded. Free wi-fi is available. Breakfasts were of a very good quality. The only negative I would say is that the prices in the restaurant seem to reflect the fact that the hotel has a captive market. I thought they were high for what they provided so I ate elsewhere. However, colleagues who did eat here had no complaints about quality but they did remark on the high prices. Bar prices are also quite high. If you can get a deal at the weekend to include food, then this would be a good base to take in the surrounding area. If you are using it for business, then it is a very pleasant place to stay especially if someone else is paying for your evening meal.

Having stayed here three times now for work I was very disappointed with my visit this month.

whilst the rooms are spacious and comfortable and all areas are very clean and well presented I was very dissapointed with the service we received at breakfast, there were no eggs on the buffet and in the 40minutes we were in the restaurant they were not replenished, when we askes for eggs we were presented with "scrambles eggs" which whilst hot was blatently npt cooked and ran off the spoon, all the breakfast items were cold and dispite ordering a pot of tea on being seated we had to ask two members of staff where it had got to before 30minutes after sitting down (and having eaten our breakfasts) it appeared. Lunch is always a let down although the buffet looks extensive nothing really goes together to make a meal.

Additionally the bar prices are ridiculous

Dear Dawnyrvn,

Thank you for your feedback about your recent stay here at Alexandra House. Your comments are taken seriously and have been discussed with our Kitchen Team. We have now removed scrambled egg from our Breakfast Buffet, it is still available but is now made to order only.

Our bar prices are comparable with other 4 star hotels within the area.
