Owner description: The Belize Zoo is an institution that cares for over 150 native wildlife, and promotes Conservation, Education, Recreation, and Research. It is also the first nature destination in Belize that is accessible to visitors with physical disabilities. We are committed to the conservation of Belize's wildlife and its habitats through the establishment of a well maintained zoological facility and education center, both poised to bring about a greater environmental awareness to the people living in Belize, and to visitors from abroad. In 2014, the Zoo became the first nature destination in the country accessible to persons with physical disabilities. TBZ believes that by bringing the people closer to the animals, which are their natural heritage, they will feel proud of these special resources, and wish to protect them for future generations. All Zoo "residents" were once pets; donated to the Zoo; rescues found injured, abandoned or orphaned and brought in rehabilitation; or born at the Zoo. The Belize Zoo receives no financial support from the Government of Belize, and generates funding to care for its residents through admission fees, tours, donations, and adoption and membership programs.

We highly recommend the Director's Tour because it is an amazing experience and it is for a great cause! You are given a VIP tour by Ms. Sharon Matola, the Director, and she shows you all of the beautiful creatures there. Many of them were saved--the zoo is less like a regular zoo, and more like a sanctuary--and some of them were even born in captivity, which is such a rare thing! It shows you just how comfortable and happy the animals there are! You get to see Jaguars, Tapirs, Coatimundis, Spider Monkeys, Crocodiles, Toucans, Parrots, and so much more! Not only that, you get to interact with them! They all know the sound of Ms. Matola's voice and they come running to her! You get up close and personal with the animals, you learn about the species and how they got there! You also get to feed them! It was truly a memorable experience. Everyone enjoyed every bit of the tour, from my then 21-month old son to my 60 year old mother! Thank you Ms. Matola, Mr. Swift, and everyone there for sharing with us these amazing encounters!

P.S. The food at the cafe there was really really delicious and fairly priced!

Personally I reject the idea of visiting and supporting Zoos in any way, however after reading about the concept of the Belize Zoo we decided to give it a chance and were indeed positively surprised. Not only did the Zoo only feature native species, but also were most of these animals rescued, with many animals unable to survive in the wild having been brought up by humans. The zoo makes efforts to educate and fill people with enthusiasm for the animals native to Belize in order to enhance protection and human impact on the environment. It was fascinating to see some of the rarest animals up close and certainly enhanced our perception and understanding of their environments as fragile systems worthy of protection.

Thank you so much for your positive review! We strive daily to make meaningful connections between our native wildlife and both Belizeans and visitors to our country. It is always encouraging to know we are meeting our goal. Best wishes from the Belize Zoo Crew!

The Belize zoo is fantastic. We came here for a day trip from Belmopan which was really easy and cheap on one of the local buses. The zoo feels much more like a nature reserve with a few fences for safety. It feels just like walking through the jungle and was great seeing the animals in their natural habitat. We went in the morning in early rainy season (may) but still saw the majority of the animals. They are also all native to Belize and the focus is very much on conservation. Definitely recommend.

Zoos are often cringe-inducing for me -- seeing animals in enclosures that aren't even close to a natural habitat. This one does a good job with giving them space and a fairly natural environment. My understanding is also that the animals here have been rescued from other places and weren't bought or bred for this purpose.

You need to book the jaguar encounter ahead of time because there are very limited slots - we arrived too late. It’s probably best to arrive first thing in the morning when animals may still be active. Cute rhyming signs explain the animals throughout the zoo. Small zoo, good to see some of the wild cats and birds, but that’s about it. There is a gift shop and restaurant.
