As the names implies, Green Haven is set in the midst of beautiful gardens. The rooms were characterised by wooden walls and floors(imagine sauna) with plenty of blankets on offer for the chilly nights. It's about 20min to town and we enjoyed the stroll back after dinner.

This hotel is beautifully built, with a European ski chalet feel. The gardens are gorgeous and well cared for. The rooms are very cozy, comfortable, and smell of a fresh forest. The view from the hotel feels alpine, adding to the ambiance. I enjoyed sitting in the front lobby, reading and writing, as the sun slowly went down. The staff was very helpful and friendly, with almost everyone speaking English and the owner having an exceptional command of English. I loved the Shan noodles at breakfast! Also, the hottest showers I took in the entire country were at this hotel! The only downfall was that there wasn't hot water in the pm, but that was very normal in Myanmar. I would definitely recommend this place to sit and relax for a night or two.

I stayed for one night and the first impressions of this hotel are positive, the building and gardens are nice, but sadly it was the worst hotel I stayed in during 25 nights in Burma. I was first put into a downstairs room with windows on three sides, all were white curtains and one set by a path outside didn't get close to meeting in the middle. Going into the bathroom I discovered water dripping from the ceiling. The next room has only one window and again the curtains didn't meet, the staff solution was to hang the bedspread over the window! The TV didn't work and the bathroom was dodgy although at least with no water from the ceiling. No a/c (but not needed), some heating may have been nice in the morning. Breakfast only served (no buffet) and it took some effort to get them to give a westerner rice which was offered to Burmese but the coffee was nice It is fairly quiet being out of town but I would certainly never stay again.

Room Tip: Try to get an upstairs room (they claimed they were full when I visited)

When we pulled up at Green Haven, I was immediately reminded of those charming countryside b&b's in Europe. The surrounding was green with pine trees and the hotel garden was blooming with flowers of many colors. We loved spending time at the patio outside the restaurant where we sipped tea, read, and basked in the gentle sun.

The room itself is quite cosy. The only complaint we had was the lack of hot water in the morning, and sometimes you can hear some plumbing noises.

The owner was very friendly and staff was always helpful. City bikes are available if you want to bike around town.

This is a really good medium-sized hotel, I recommend it. The rooms are large and comfortable, the breakfast (served, but a good choice) is excellent and cooked to prder, they gave us a bowl of fruit in the room and the staff are friendly. But best of all is outside: the hotel has wonderful has wonderful gardens with seating in them so you can relax outside, and they have the flowers in bowls around the hotel. And you are on a hill c. 15 mins walk from the centre of Kalaw which means that the view from each window is of countryside. The only type of traveller who would not fit in would be someone in a wheelchair: being on a hill there are slopes and steps. Do go there!

I stayed at the Green Haven for almost four weeks while escaping the heat of Yangon for a spell. It was considered the 'off season' in Kalaw, and there were few other guests at this or any other hotel in the town, which made it an excellent time to visit.

I chose the Green Haven for a long stay because it was away from heavily-used roads, unlike some of the other hotels, especially those near the town market and the main through-road to Aung Ban. The previous comment saying that the road near the hotel is busy I just did not find to be true at all. You see the occasional Grand Tiger (Chinese pickup) going up the road to the military encampment on the other side of the golf course, but very little else ever goes on out there.

The hotel is about 25 minutes walk from the market area of town, but I found this to be an advantage rather than a disadvantage. The hotels over that way are noisy, and the market area is only charming when the 5-day market is happening and you can see members of various ethnic groups, otherwise it's noisy and dusty and no different from markets anywhere else in Myanmar. The Green Haven is located on the road to Shwe Oo Min buddha caves and also (with a bit more walking) Knee Paya, so if you are interested in visiting those places, the location couldn't be better. Shwe Oo Min you can actually see from the balcony of the hotel, it is that close by.

The staff at the Green Haven are extraordinarily nice, and the owner, U Than Lwin, really goes out of his way to make sure everything is 'asin pyay ba deh' (Burmese for 'going smoothly'). I was finding it quite difficult in Kalaw to arrange a decent driver to go to places like Pindaya, Kakku, etc, by the usual method of randomly approaching taxi drivers on the main street. Anyway, U Than Lwin found me one straight away with a decent car (Toyota Crown) and who charged reasonable rates that I didn't feel I had to haggle down.

Re breakfast, you can ask the staff for whatever you want, practically, and they will try to do it for you. I like local food, so I was requesting mohinga or Shan sticky rice the night before, and they would always get it for me and add to it a plate of rice a couple of boiled or fried eggs, a plate of bananas, and usually some 'beh pyo' (boiled beans) as well. There was always far more than I could eat. They were also doing Euro-style breakfasts for other guests while I was there.

U Than Lwin also offered to set it up for me to use the golf course next to the hotel during my stay, but I turned this down as I am rubbish at golf. Others might want to take him up on the offer.

While I was staying, the hotel was undergoing a major refurbishment, with the previously somewhat plain rooms on the right side were all getting the pine panelling that the ones on the left already have. The hotel was also getting a new terrace out front which will be the site of an expanded restaurant / cafe.

The wifi was also upgraded so that by the time I left there were three routers showing up on my Mac's wifi finder. The wifi does cut out quite often because of power fluctuations (much the case throughout Shan State), but I just used to call down to one of the staff and they would reboot the modem, which often worked.

Generally speaking, Green Haven is a friendly and serene place to chill out for a few days. The balcony rooms are perfect for sitting on and having a beer while looking at the treetops of the forest opposite, and doing some writing or whatever floats your boat.
