We spent a relaxing 2 nights as part of a family/holiday visit to Tassie from NSW. Friends initially advised that Saltwater River might be a little too far away from the hubbub of Port Arthur but it was absolutely nothing of the sort. Taranna is only 10-15 mins away along meandering country roads for dinner if you're that way inclined (Mussel Boys esp. + Eaglehawk Café past the Neck on the away in well worth a stop), plus we were able to comfortably take in the penguins at Fortescue (night 7th), the devil park (morn 8th) & Port Arthur (arvo/evening 8th), and Nubeena (day 9th), and next time would like to tackle the walk to Lime Bay to the north for which Saltwater River is perfect access. After a day out it was actually a joy to head "home" to a somewhere that didn't feel like "Port Arthur", in both the convict and the touristy sense, and to start the next day with freshly gathered eggs. This left plenty of time for the girls to feed the sheep with Thomas and us to spend a morning down at the private beach on the kayak and splashing in the endless shallows (where we saw a ray). There was also an optional tour of the chicken coop which we weren’t up early enough to take advantage of. Speaking with Stephen, it sounds like getting this place up and running has been a labour of love for him and family, and the heartfelt warmth which comes from that keenly imbued every aspect of our stay. Highly recommended.

If you want breath-taking views, quiet surrounds, and the most beautiful, private experience, go here. We had a lovely time - the beach is 5 minutes walk away, we used the complimentary sea kayaks to have a paddle, and thoroughly enjoyed the spacious 2 bedroom apartment, with full facilities and free breaky! Great place to stay, either for a small romantic trip away, or an extended family trip. We loved it here, and the area surrounding it was absolutely lovely. Thank you!

Very comfortable cottage in stunning surroundings. You would really have to see it to believe it. All we shared the beach with was nature itself. The only location I can think of that comes near is the Outer Hebrides (Scotland). Splendid hospitality and help from Christine and Stephen. My advice to all would be – stay longer! Using the kayak was a lot of fun. Great provisions provided including delicious eggs.

We were met with a lovely welcome from our host. A booking was made for us by our host at a local restaurant- fabulous seafood and local wines. We started our stay with a relaxing walk through the mines. Spotted some local wildlife. Warm comfortable well appointed accommodation. Woke in the morning to a spectacular vista. Leisurely breakfast and off to Port Arthur. A very memorable stay. We will return.

10 out of 10 in every category *hospitality of hosts, *wonderfully comfortable cottage and *location, location location!!! Would love to have stayed longer. Loved everything about this beautiful spot. Well situated to visit all the familiar tourist attractions in the Port Arthur area, as well as the lesser known local historic sites. Hosts Christine and Steve were very helpful with advice and assisted us in planning our days activities, which they were able to book ahead for us. Our three days were full of adventure and interest. What a shame we didn't get to go fishing in the tinny, or drift in the kayak in the early morning. But then, we have something to look forward to on our next visit.
