Owner description: The Coal Mines Historic Site was Tasmania’s first operational mine, established as a much-needed local source of coal, but also as a place of punishment for the ‘worst class’ of convicts.Along with the nearby Port Arthur Historic Site, the Coal Mines Historic Site is included in the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage listing.A visit to the Coal Mines is a fascinating and rewarding adjunct to any visit to the Port Arthur Historic Site.

“Free and without the crowds”

A very nice walk along the water and then again inland. The ruins take you back to what the conditions must of been like for the convicts.

“Real feel of the history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 March 2013

It is exactly what it says....ruins.One really gets the feel of what it must have been like way back then.Nothing much has been done to it,so it's a bit of an eerie feel. It's a nice walk around the ruins & there is some beautiful scenery around the water area.

“Convict history”

Not much to see as it is in ruins, but enough to give you a general feel about the hard life of the convict at this settlement.

“real atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 February 2013

The Coal Mines have a sense of reality that is perhaps missing from the over beautified and lushness of Port Arthur (with the exception of the fantastic Isle of the Dead). Also only saw four other visitors to this site during the three hours there. Great walking area too and worth strolling to the further reaches of the site. Not to be missed and was free.

“So Much Potential”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 February 2013

Not enough information on site available. The ruins were unprotected and left to be disrespected. When we were there people were climbing and jumping only on the ruins. This site has alot of potential to be a major attraction due to its proximity to Port Arthur but it felt like the forgotten relative.
