This property should be entered as 'Golden Phoenix' - at least that is what the room card said. I normally stay at the Dong Sheng, which is more central, but on this occasion was full up with a convention. The Golden Phoenix is a littel more recent in construction, but offers rooms of almost identical size and facilities, at a somewhat lower price. I had room 908, facing north, quiet, with pleasnt views of the mountains, but getting little direct sun. The weather was 'crisp', early autumn, but with a sharp north westerly wind, which struck this side of the building, and revealed the poor fit of the window frame. Since the heating season had not started the room was quite chilly at night. Bed was fair, but erring on the hard side. Shower was good, and the water always hot, but I was not sure which dispenser gave hair shampoo and which body soap. They seemed very similar!
The evening bowl of fruit was a nice touch, and with it the card for breakfast, which was traditional Chinese in style. The freshly made soup was good, but the fried bread sticks soggy as usual. It would be nice to have something towards western tastes - some toast and jam perhaps, or breakfast cereals? Otherwise no complaints - quiet and calm, lifts not too busy, and staff polite and helpful.
