“Alpine Village Suites, Taos Ski Valley, NM”
Reviewed 25 June 2012

We have been coming to Alpine Suites for many years. About two or three years ago we began coming with our granddaughters and occasionally my daughter and son-law. The suites are modern, airy, comfortable during the summer and very close to several trails (Williams Lake and Gold Peak) my husband and I like to hike. The staff is accommodating, courteous and knowledgeable about the area on the mountain and the town of Taos. In past years during the summer months we have been there during a musical festival and several other note worthy events. The mountain area is peaceful and appears to be full of like minded quiet, nature loving people. We try to get to the Taos on the mountain and Alpine Suites at least once a year for a respite from the busy urban life we live in Austin Texas.

Great location and friendly staff. Booking through the front desk saved a ton of money on ski rentals and lift tickets. A bit on the pricey side, but the best value in Taos Ski Valley when compared to the other accommendations available.

Room Tip: The cheaper rooms book up pretty fast, so make reservations early.

This is my 5th trip to stay at Taos Ski Valley. Overall, this little chalet is quite charming. The ladies who work up front, superb! The location is not a ski in ski out. But, once you walk out of the back or front door.... you really are only a matter of less than 75 yards to the slopes-lifts. If that! Definitely rent skis from the Inn owners ski shop, Cottams. They'll store your skis free right there for you. Those folks are awesome as well. My only complaint, is the headboards rattled with every little move, while sleeping...which kept me awake. But we moved to another room, and that was not an issue. Additionally, they didn't seem to have sufficient hot water in the evenings when everyone started showering at the same time. If you are new to Taos ski valley, the food is not that great. Your best bet is Rhoda's...awesome menu and food. Your worst choice, is the restaurant at Snakedance Inn (Hondo Bar and grill). Food was awful...not worth, at all, the price per entree. Their meal was about $16 for fish, 4 asparagus spears, and maybe 5 small potato wedges. All in all, the food could be held in one hand.... certainly not enough for a growing teenager. Just my opinion! One last note... this is a pet friendly lodging. So there will be dogs, some of which bark during the day when their owners are off skiing... and as a result of allowing pets, they spray this immensely strong odor reducer, with the scent of pine! It was overwhelming for me. Overall, this really is a sweet place to stay. Just be aware of the pet policy!

Room Tip: Stay on the top floor, to reduce sound.

It's pretty rare to be able to stay right on site for this price and we've been coming faithfully for the past 5 years. The rooms aren't fancy, but we like the queen suites in the main lodge (2 queens, fireplace). We tried the lofts, but the suites are newer, quieter and the queen beds are comfortable. All rooms have a small kitchen (not much more than a 2-burner hot plate and microwave) that is fine for making pancakes and soups.
The only thing we would change is the 5 day minimum stay over the holidays - 4 days of skiing is plenty for us.

Be sure to check out the Pizza Shack next door for good pizzas and bbq. It's under new (old) management (used to be Crossroads Pizza) and the new service is very good.

The snow, by the way, was great this year!!

This was our first ski trip so I will say that this was a beautiful place to stay. Alpine Village is within walking distance to all of the skiing so that was perfectly convenient. Our room was great, views were beautiful, staff was very friendly and helpful. We stayed in the King Suite and it was a large, fairly nice room. Slightly outdated but overall I would say it was clean and bed was pretty comfortable. Bathroom is way too small though. Very small shower and bathtub. It definitely served its purpose and I would stay there again if we travelled to Taos strickly for skiing.

If you plan to do things in the city of Taos during your viist, I would suggest staying closer to town, maybe stay at least half way down the mountain. Its about a 30 min drive each way to get to town. We were there the last week of the ski season and skiing stops at 4pm and the restaurants in Ski Valley close by 6-7pm. That's not a negative on the hotel, just a learning experience for us. If you plan to ski every day and not go to town very often then staying here would be perfect for you. Its a great place!!

This is a convenient place to stay at Taos Ski Valley. It is right above Cottam's Ski Shop. If you are a light sleeper I would not stay in loft 18 or 19 because they open up at 7am and turn on music. We stayed in #19. There was a gas grill on the porch looking out to the ski slope. Very nice!!! But note that the kitchen is very small with a tiny fridge and two burner stove. No oven. If you plan on making large meals this room might be a bit of a challenge for storage of food and prep. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly. We would stay here again but think differently in terms of meal planning.

This 'suite' hotel advertised accommodation for 4 persons, 2 in bedroom, 2 on sofa bed in living room. My family group of 3 encountered the following problem: the sofa bed frame was bent, it took 3 of us and the bellman to open it and when opened the mattress was so old and lumpy we called it "jaws". The bellman was most helpful and brought in an additional mattress but that was inadequate for restful sleep.
When I brought this to the attention of the manager, she was apologetic and said others had complained previously! Her solutions were unworkable as they were similar or downgrades. Too bad as the hotel is charming and well located but I would caution anyone staying here to check out sleeping arrangements prior to accepting a room, unless you like sleeping on the floor.
