“A little tired...”
Reviewed 27 August 2013

This is a beautiful building with a fantastic history. The rooms within the hall are tired and need some investment. The restaurant was ok with good home cooked food. Lovely atmosphere and very attentive staff. The grounds like the Hall could be spectacular with a little more time and investment.

We were keen to see the venue and arranged to go and look round. Unfortunately there was apparently a wedding at the weekend we were back up in Shropshire so we decided to take a day off work to stay on and visit the venue. We double/treble checked the time of the visit and had it confirmed each time. Despite this when we arrived we weren't expected. Especially frustrating after finding out that there hadn't been a wedding there at the weekend in any case. We viewed four other venues in the area that weekend and all had weddings!

We then proceeded to endure a comedy of errors as the owner and staff proceeded to spend snatched conversations with us as their phone kept interrupting us and we were left alone. We were given differing information, extremely poor customer service bordering on rude and felt like we were being hurried offsite and everything was listed on the website. This left with zero confidence that our wedding would be organised properly and were given the feeling Soulton Hall would be doing us a favour to pay them a substantial amount of money to hold our wedding.

In terms of the venue, it is in beautiful surroundings and is the perfect setting if you are looking for a rural wedding. Rooms are ok but dated and look tired. Overpriced for what you get,

A complete waste time and two days off work we won't get back. A poor way to treat people and run a business. This should be taken as constructive feedback.

Soulton Hall was a marvelous spot to spend the weekend, offering good walks, fine dining, excellent service and elegant, comfortable accommodation. Of particular interest is the history of the manor, which the proprietors relate with some relish to newly arrived visitors. My room was lined with charming wooden paneling and furnished with antique furniture, all very atmospheric. There was a sizable bathroom and all the relevant modern gadgets to match, so the historic authenticity of the rooms are not at the price of comfort. Surrounding the house, and the adjoining garden, are acres of picturesque farm and woodland; ideal for stretching one's cramped city legs. Dining was very satisfactory, the produce fresh and nutritious, in the best strain of English culinary tradition. The stay was made even more pleasant due to the jovial presence of Ann, John and Tim, who run the farm and hotel together. Their hospitality and conversation were much appreciated. I look forward to visiting again in the near future.

Room Tip: Ask for a four poster bed!

Panelled bedroom in which floor sloped dramatically and creaked badly. Wardrobe had large wooden block under one side to keep it just about straight. Bed was uncomfortable and the tilt of the room made it feel that one would fall out of it any minute. Poor breakfast and unfriendly service. Very expensive for what was being offered.

Our daughter and her partner planned a wedding at Soulton Hall and everyone was very impressed by the venue, the food and the welcome provided by all the people at the hall. From our initial arrival on the Friday to set things up when we were offered tea and cake to the very unhurried departure on the Sunday; everything worked like clockwork. The wedding meal was excellent in spite of having to cater for such a large group. Our sincere thanks to the the Ashton family and all those who help them.

Room Tip: If you want to fully absorb the atmosphere book a room in the hall itself.

Hired the whole estate for the weekend for my wedding and I couldn't be happier with how everything went.
The food was exceptional and nothing was too much for the staff on the day. They were open to new ideas and helped make exactly what we wanted.
The only slight disappointment was one of additional cottages we had booked hadn't been finished for some of our guests (the kitchen hadn't been installed meaning upon arrival they couldn't even make a cup of tea)

We have just returned from celebrating our first wedding anniversary at Soulton Hall after getting married there on the 5th April last year. Our wedding day was truly the best day of our lives; Ann, John and Tim could not have done more for us. Every aspect of our day was perfect from the care and attention we received to the amazing wedding breakfast that was prepared for us. We loved that our day was tailored especially for us down to the finest detail which made our wedding feel very personal and intimate, something all our guests commented on.

Last night rekindled all of those special memories we hold from our wedding day. We were made to feel most relaxed and welcome. The dining room looked stunning lit by candlelight. Ann was on hand to look after us and as soon as we opened the menu we knew we were going to be in for a treat! The food Nick prepared for us was beautifully presented and tasted delicious. After the meal we enjoyed relaxing in front of the open fire and went away again feeling we had been treated to a very lovely evening.

Whether you are celebrating a special occasion or just having a weekend away, Soulton Hall and everyone there make it feel a special experience. We look forward to coming back next year and hope to find an excuse to return sooner!
