Hawkstone Park Hotel
Reviewed 29 May 2014

Just come back from a 2 night 3 day golfing break. The overall value for money was excellent at £148 for the package : DBB, 2 nights and 3 rounds of golf. During May they had some special offers as this package is normally in the area of £210(ish). We have been here many times before over a 15 year period, but hadn't been back since 2008.
Positives:
1) 2 great golf courses, which are very different. They also have a 9 hole par 3 course which is also good and a test.
2) Quality of food and service is excellent in the hotel. Great self service breakfast, from cereals, fresh fruit salad, yoghurts to a full English
3) Dinner menu, A1 - the salmon was delicious, but plenty of other choices.
4) Very friendly and attentive staff.

Negatives:
1) Golf buggies too expensive at £30, need between £5 - £10 taken off to be as competitive as others places.
2) The hotel and rooms are exactly the same ( or appeared to be the same ) as when we were last there in 2008. Definitely could do with a refurb. Apologies to the hotel if they have but it wasn't evident to us.
3) Price of the drinks in the hotel and golf complex are extortionate to say the least !! This was the biggest negative. They have a captive audience as not much around there in terms of local pubs with food.
Pint of Guinness : £4.30
Pint of Peroni : £4.80
All other pints : £4.00
2 shorts and mixers, no change or very little from a tenner.
Pint of coke : £3.50 ( where did that come from !! )
I know the old cliche about that you get the room and golf at a competitive rate and they make the cost up with the drink - well in this case it's true - but it shouldn't be.
There are plenty of hotels with courses offering golf breaks at similar rates, but I have never seen drinks that expensive.

It's such a great course and venue that it's down to the drinks prices that tarnished it slightly. Lots of corporate golf days take place here and these can afford to pay, but for Joe public, coming here for a break, it's a different matter.

All in all though, a great venue for golf lovers !!

We stayed at this hotel on a Friday night and the staff were very very helpful.
They arranged a very nice room for me following an email from myself asking.
The room was massive and had everything you could ask for.
The evening meal was fabulous and could not be faulted in any way.
Breakfast was a little disappointing in that we had to wait a while for a table and then because it was a buffet style, A lot of the food choices had gone.
Overall I would highly recommend this hotel - BUT I think the manager / owners should really consider re-investing some time and money in a face-lift in certain areas - For example the outside entrance and some small areas which are starting to look tired.
Thank you though for arranging a wonderful Friday night for myself and my now Fiancee which we will never forget :)

Positives:
- All reception staff we met were friendly, helpful and professional.
- The breakfast food was OK
- The bed was comfortable
- Ample parking
- Free wifi which works (but seemingly only free for one hour in any four hours)

Negatives:
- Bedroom was small & draughty (gap around door blew door curtain significantly). The decor is 'frayed around the edges' and a little grubby ('clean enough' I suppose - but not as good as other budget hotels)
- There was a 'pillow top' layer on top of the mattress to make it more comfortable but no mattress protector for hygiene concerns.
- The bedroom walls are paper thin - I could hear the actual subject matter of a conversation next door (i.e. not even just muffled voices). Also, when the people in the room above moved about or had a shower it was so noisy I could even hear them through ear plugs.
- The shower was just to say OK - but the noise it made to produce any water was very loud indeed. (I even switched it off at first, fearing it sounded broken or just 'wrong')
- The coffee and tea at breakfast were not good - seemed to be the cheapest possible judging by the taste.
- The breakfast room staff were all geared up for serving to groups (weddings, golfing parties and conference groups seemingly) not individuals or couples & we felt uncomfortable. Their communication skills could use some adjustment.

Indeed the whole place is really not set up for couples at all. I imagine it is a quick and easy stop over for maybe a single contractor in the area for a few nights or if you want a cheap conference venue but apart from that I just don't see it as a couples place! Certainly not a place for a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

Although seemingly set in Parkland, it is ALL given over to a golf course so there is nowhere to just walk/wander. The Hawkstone Follies are a drive of about quarter/half mile even though they are part of the same estate (Guests get half price access).

The price does not compare favourably to a Travelodge or even a Premier Inn and yet the quality of the bedroom, public spaces and breakfast experience is not even as good as those budget hotel chains.

I would not choose to stay here again and would not recommend it - in spite of the reception staff being great. (Indeed, they are by far the best feature of the Hotel)

Room Tip: The room we had is in an annexe to the side of the main Hotel building and it is that room my review...

The entrance to this hotel pre-warned us - it looked as though we were entering a factory unit as reception area was not apparent. The room booked was described as 'superior' - superior to what would be interesting - perhaps a tent. The room was barely adequate for a stay of more than one night. The shower was awful and hardly produced more than a half-hearted trickle. There was no mini-bar and very limited cold drinks available from the bar. I would advise anyone staying to take their own cold drinks as the bar is extremely expensive. There is no Wifi available or phone access in the hotel - even sitting in car in the car park only produced a limited signal.

The restaurant is obviously being run on a tight budget. The breakfasts were fine, except for limited choice of fresh fruit. The evening meals were very poor. The same menu for a 3 day stay proved trying. Hardly any vegetables appeared with the meals - just a few anonymous strips of something and no salad to be seen. The wine service is dreadful - first time I've had a waitress plonk a bottle of white wine on the table without opening it or placing it in a chill bucket - maybe not many of the clientele drink wine. We expected coffee to be part of the meal, and were told after our wine experience they would be 'complimentary' - they were then charged.

There were photos of weddings around the hotel - don't go there - it would be a huge disappointment.

Room Tip: No idea of other rooms - superior definitely not.

We are sorry that you were disappointed with your stay at Hawkstone. Weddings are very popular here, we have many throughout the year. Our picturesque surroundings and fantastic customer service seem to merit many thank you cards and letters received from our bridal couples who are delighted with their big day.

I have given this resort 3 stars due mainly to the 2 excellent golf courses. If you like your golf, you wont be dissapointed with what this course has to offer. Well maintained and located in some of the best countryside the UK has to offer.
As for the hotel, well, it's a tired looking place and the bathrooms need a serious update. If you like a good power shower in the morning, dream on. They're are more suited to Fawlty Towers! If you intend doing any business here, you'll have difficulty trying to get a dcent internet connection. It's very hit and miss and at the best - just Average.
Food is quite bland. Nothing to write home about and lacks immagination. If you stay here for more than a few days, you're more than likely be eating out down the local pub. Take away the golf courses, dont think I would stay here for a romantic weekend away or for business.

Room Tip: Stay in the main part of the hotel and not the extention.

Thank you for your positive golf review. With regard to the hotel, as per previous responses, maintenance to the buildings is on-going. New wifi has recently been installed and this should make a big difference to our internet connections.

This hotel & golf complex is looking very jaded and tired, it is way overdue for a refurbishment.

The setting is in itself excellent, however the hotel lacks any real charm or character.

Although wi-fi is free, reception in rooms is patchy at best & non existent at worst!

Having read some of the reviews following booking and prior to arriving at the hotel, we were pleasantly surprised by what we found. Set in beautiful countryside, it so peaceful. It is not ultra modern in decoration or furniture and indeed some areas could do with a lick of paint but we felt that our room was totally adequate. We felt the accommodation etc was fitting for the age of the hotel.Very clean and tidy, spacious with a good sized bathroom. The wifi was not good in the room but if you wanted to use it then you could sit in the reception area. Staff were courteous and very helpful.
Overall a lovely relaxing stay in a lovely part of the world, we would definitely stay there again, thank you.
