We loved this hotel. It was more than we wanted to pay but still we were willing to extend our vacation by another night. The rooms were a perfect size for the three of us. The hotel has bicycles to use and surf boards as well. The food was amazing and the beach was a few steps away! It was beautiful and we WILL be returning!

Ernest house is very close to a couple of nice beaches which are relatively empty (for Shimoda) during the summer months. The hotel itself is clean and the rooms are adequate but nothing out of the ordinary. The breakfast basket is awesome. Decent value during peak season.

We loved Ernest House so much, we stayed twice last summer. Clean, family-run, basic accommodations with reasonable prices, especially in the off-season. However, if you're a bed snob, they are a bit hard, which is typical in Japan. Try to book on the shoulder of high season for best value -- water is still warm in late Sept but you pay far less than during the peak in August. The breakfast basket is delicious and worth the extra fee. Delivered to your room by 8 AM, we took it to the beach (3-5 min walk) each morning with our beach chairs for a morning picnic. If you like to surf, this beach is for you! Dogs are also allowed at both the Ernest House and the beach. I think our Rufus had more fun on our beach vacay than we did! :) Cafe Mellow, attached to Ernest House, has high-quality food. I recommend the smoked salmon salad -- the salmon is smoked in-house, and if you're anti-iceberg lettuce like I am, you'll be pleased with the greens. All in all, Ernest House is a great choice for a reasonably priced beach vacation in Japanese paradise, just a few hours from bustling Tokyo!

I have been here a few years ago, in the summer. The location is close to kisami beach, the parking is free and the rooms, the special breakfast (in a picnic basket , my daughter loved ! ) are great and I 'd stay again!!

Amamos nos hospedar nesta pousada . Localizada a alguns metros da praia, alem dos serviços diferenciados que eles oferecem.Recomendo e com certeza voltaria novamente !

My wife and I stayed one evening at the Ernest House. We checked in early and had lunch at the Mellow Cafe, the main restaurant at the hotel. The fare was excellent and an English menu is available. The bar was reasonably priced and well-stocked. This was our first stay in a Japanese hotel and we are under the impression the Ernest House compares favorably to other Japanese hotels.

The hotel has some Western amenities, but the rooms are "Japanese" style. Nevertheless the room was quite spacious and the bathroom more than adequate.

Chie, the owner was extremely helpful and spoke English well. We opted for breakfast for an additional fee and it was more than worth it. The location of the hotel is incredible, within a minute or so from Ohama Beach. There is a campground nearby as well of you have a group of folks looking for a cheaper option. The hotel has ample parking.

We will definitely visit the Ernest House again!

One of the more homely hotels in Shimoda. This is in a great location close to the beach and many of the restaurants and bars etc. Really friendly staff who are very welcoming. The restaurant/ bar next door has a nice deck to sit on in the afternoons. They also light a small fire out the front in the evenings with logs etc to sit around on.

Ernest House offers standard clean accommodation right by the beach. The rooms are basic with floorboards but very clean. They offer a TV (no English Channel) and a computer in the room. The bathroom is a Japanese style Unit Bathroom - the smallest I have seen with a tiny tub. We ordered the breakfast basket, it was very nice - fresh fruit, juice, yoghurt, sandwich etc. - all fresh and nicely prepared. The beach is right nearby - it was a shame it was pouring so we could not enjoy it. We did not eat at the restaurant but tried the White Beach Hotel nearby which was nice. A nice retreat to stay when you are looking for something more western - particularly when used to staying in so many Japanese hotels.
