WBH was recommended to us by friends, and we have thanked them for the tip-off! WBH is reminiscent of the old-style traveler's inns back in the Old Country. A fantastic restaurant, a well-stocked bar with STRONG drinks, and some basic rooms for you to crash in after a long day on the beach (or after the long drive from Tokyo)! The rooms were clean, but spartan. The bathrooms were smaller than those you would find in a business hotel. But keeping a realistic view of things, we weren't paying for the room. We were paying for the location. It's literally a 30-second walk from the front of the hotel to the beach. The restaurant was the main draw to the hotel, and there were even guests from another hotel who came to WBH for breakfast and dinner! There was no real difference between the restaurant waitstaff and the hotel staff. We were checked in by our first waitress! Speaking of which, the entire staff was extremely friendly and extremely helpful! The only downside was that the waitstaff were clearly inexperienced and needed to focus a bit more on paying attention to the "after-sales service". I saw one couple wait nearly 20 minutes for their bill. That said, the waitstaff weren't professionals, but were students on summer break, trying to make a little bit of coin. I'd like to give a special tip of the hat to Julie, who was extremely friendly, courteous, attentive, and willing to answer all sorts of questions. The only recommendation I would offer to WBH is that for the price being charged for the spartan rooms, breakfast should be included. Other than that, we had a wonderful visit and would gladly go back. Thanks for a great weekend, WBH!

Room Tip: Rooms 208 and 216 seem to be the farthest away from the bar and the patio/dining area. If you want...

Thank you for staying with us! We are happy that you enjoyed our location across the road from the beach. We are especially happy that you enjoyed dining at Mario Mare, our new Italian restaurant. I will tell Julie how much you appreciated her friendly assistance. We hope you stay with us again soon.

PS - Rooms 208 and 210 are farthest from the restaurant and bar, while 216 is the quietest twin room.

We stayed at White Beach with many friends and kids, and it has been a perfect weekend. The hotel has just been renovated into a Greek-style house, and the service operated by Mike, his father (!) Ken, and the whole crew, is fun and friendly. Still a little bit overpriced, but surely they will work on it...

We came down here in hopes of relaxing and spending quality time together as a family . Well, this place does not welcome families, like hotels should! It is a party place with too many people. This resulted in waiting too long for food, then when it arrived, was the wrong order! Usually no big deal, but when we waited almost an hour, was not unenjoyable. Our room was very small and impossible to get a nights rest.

It was the second time we were coming to White Beach (some friends organized the week end) and I have to say the second experience was better than the first one 2 years ago. This place has so much potential: good concept of trendy beach house hotel, a great location, kids friendly (free baby cot)... but it totally failed to deliver.

First the room wasn't very clean, not refreshed for the 2 nights we were there (at least emptying dustbin would be nice). The hotel has been only partially upgraded and is still equipped with the old japanese bath unit, totally non practical and extremely tiny.

However my main complaint was the noise. There is a bar downstairs, which is good, but the whole foreigner community of Shimoda is coming there for drinks. So forget about relaxing time on the terrace or sleeping before midnight because there is going to be a noisy crowd of people, not even staying at the hotel, at your window
When you pay 20 000 Yen a night with no breakfast you expect at least to be able to sleep and relax.

Following weeks of humid weather in packed, formal Tokyo, the White Beach Hotel was a great antidote. The atmosphere is very casual, more like a beach hotel in Thailand than just another Japanese hotel. The staff were very helpful and accomodating and the food good. The location is just off a nice strectch of beach and the surroundings are tranquil and attractive. Our two kids enjoyed the garden and beach equipment available for guests. The only negative was the very small rooms. For a couple this would be ok but with two adults, a baby cot and a single futon on the floor there was scarcely room to sneeze. The bathrooms too are tiny and a bit utilitarian. At $200 a night it felt a little steep though value is always relative and this was a lot better than rates quoted elsewhere. Other reviewers have mentioned the noise, however, although there was plenty of activity late in the bar, we could hear little from our room.

Pros: Great Location, 1 Minute from the beach, free beach utilities and surfboards, free wireless Lan

Cons: We stayed at this place for 4 days / 3 nights in August 2010. Not once was the room cleaned in this nor were the bedsheets changed. We only got new towels upon request. We had to empty the trash bin by ourselves. The whole place is a bit dodgy, sandy, moist. Ok for a backpackers near the beach and for budget travelers, absolutely not ok for 20.000 Yen per night (!!) and a nice weekend with the Misses.
The nice lounge on their website is only allowed to hang out on if you order drinks, so basically no place to just hang out and sit there.

As friendly for families as for couples, White Beach will enlighten your stay with his personalize service and one of the best location of the Izu Peninsula.
Less than 10 min drive from Shimoda, 20 seconds walk from the the white Ohama beach, it's the perfect location to enjoy the relaxing beach and its surf spot or to explore the peninsula .
It provides as well a nice bar and a deck terrace where both parents and kids will feel comfortable, whether you go there to enjoy a good meal (must try the sea food bbq) or a reverse margarita, White Beach will deliver to you.
