“Good hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 July 2013

The hotel has a spectacular location with great view over the sea. The staff is very friendly and helpfull, but knowledge in English is a bit limited. The hotel needs refurbishing, stains on carpets and walls and the interior is a bit unmodern. The rooms are spatious, the one we had, and the view is great. Be sure to book a room with a sea view. The breakfast buffet offers japanese and western style dishes and is great. The pool area in the hotel garden is lovely and the nearby Nahabeta beach is a 5 mns walk. The restaurants at the hotel has good and well cocked food, but the prices are very high!!! 15 mns walk to downtown Shimoda, the hotel offers free shuttle bus to and from Shimoda train station. During our visit free wifi was opened in all areas incl the rooms.

Room Tip: Be sure to book a room with sea view, some rooms have a balcony.

This was our second stay here with our family of 5. We had 3 kids 5 and under and they loved it. My 2 year old didn’t want to leave. We booked on agoda.com and the kids were free. The staff is extremely courteous and they went out of their way to make us feel at home. They even provided a free travel crib. Last time we stayed, we accidentally got a smoking room (my fault). They not only moved us, they upgraded us for free to a larger suite. They also moved all of our stuff for us to the larger room. The pool had just opened up and the kids loved going there, although it is a bit of a walk down several flights of stairs. Though the hotel feels dated at times, the views are absolutely amazing. Definitely get the ocean view room… it’s worth it! I also tried the public onsen and it was an awesome experience. The parking is free, but the roads into the cove where the hotel sits are tiny. You will not believe your GPS is taking you the correct way. Again, outstanding service and wonderful views are what make this place the best. We’ll stay there again.

We saw this hotel on the website and after looking at pictures of the spectacular views from the hotel, we just had to stay there.

We had hired a car and did find it difficult to locate the “road” into it. There are two and we eventually settled on an unlikely narrow road coming in from Route 136 with a Lawsons on the corner. The road was a little bit like a goat track between houses, then through a cutting and a spooky forest then past an amazing pink building looking like an American colonial home labelled “The Lighthouse” which may have been a guesthouse but maybe not presently operational.

Then around a violent u-turn where you could read you own back numberplate and up the hill to the most magnificent site for a hotel and well worth the tortuous introduction.

Despite all this it is a walkable distance to Perry Road restaurants and the town. And they do have a shuttle bus.

There is plenty of parking available at the front of the hotel.

The bellboy was an older man but quite the most cheerful person alive and nothing was too much trouble.

Once in the ocean view room it really needed a while to drink in the outlook. Far below was the grassed hotel terrace and somewhere further down there was a swimming pool. But the views of the harbour were just as someone had described on Trip Advisor as being like the Amalfi coast. The hotel was sited between rocky headlands with beaches below and the entrance to the harbour was visible and you could see boats plying in and out past the sea walls, including the Black Ship Ferry.

I got up early one morning at 4 am and the harbour lights were twinkling in their numbers with different colours and blinking time rates and one by one they disappeared as the dawn arrived. Fishing boats were making their way out to sea. Rather magic.

The room was large by Japanese standards and although an older hotel still had a nice feel to it.

We hired a PC from the front desk which was handy for us to track down local information that we used while travelling through the Izu peninsula.

We travelled most days so didn’t eat at the hotel but the dining room has that same outlook and would have been good for breakfast.

This hotel sits on an impressive cliff overlooking a tempting turquoise shimmering Pacific Ocean bay. To spend some extra bucks for the ocean view is thus recommended. Too bad we visited early April, water too cold even for us Swedes. The hotel is in need of refurbishing and stains on carpets/walls made our room feel slightly dirty although they probably were of the permanent type. It seems to be a popular spot for Japanese seniors, less for foreigners. The service is very courteous, the English is a bit limited but works fine. Shimoda and off-hotel restaurants are ~15mins by foot. Great breakfast buff.

The hotel is located a bit outside of town on a small hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean, really beautiful location. Rooms (we had western style, twin) ok & clean, with a good sized bathroom. The ocean view was a highlight, really beautiful. Very nice staff, very friendly and helpful. I did not use the onsen (Japanese bath), but was told that it is not very large but has a great view. Breakfast was nice with plenty of choices, japanese style and western style, good coffee! We did not take dinner in the hotel, but went to town, which is about a 10 minutes (nice) walk. For the non-Japanese speakers - the staff speak some English. Free parking is available just in front of the hotel.

Room Tip: Take a room with Ocean View!

Nice location, which overlooks the Sagami-Nada Sea coast. Clean rooms with very nice sea view, but hotel celebrates 50 years of business and should be renewed. A very good continental and japanese breakfast buffet. Friendly staff. Wired internet only in the lobby. Hot-spring baths with nice view and big outdoor pool. There's a free shuttle from train station. Kisami beach is an hour away (shutte to the station and then public bus). Many restaurants are within a 15-minute walk (back at the hotel by taxi, it's on a cape !)

A very good continental and japanese breakfast buffet.

We got super discounted rates on this hotel, and expected it to be a a great experience, but it wasn't really anything special. The view was amazing, but the location is inconvenient (both to the station and the beaches), the shuttles don't run back and forth from the station after 5 (cabs from the station are around 1000yen), the building itself is aging a bit, someone had clearly been smoking in our room before, and the onsen wasn't that great. The food at the hotel is really overpriced, so you'll want to go out into town for dinner, and we just brought combini food back and kept it in the fridge overnight for breakfast. On the other hand, it's hard to find a reasonably priced nice hotel in Shimoda -- so this place is fine, it's just nothing to write home about.
