We enjoyed our stay completely. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The hotel and rooms are modern, and our room (Number 3) was quite large with a marble bathroom with a shower and a separate over-sized bathtub. Our room was cool even though the days were quite hot. The ground level rooms have doors leading out to a pleasant garden. An extensive breakfast buffet is included with the usual cheeses, breads, juices etc. plus salmon (but no hot alternatives). We ate three nights at the restaurant which offers well-prepared regional specialties. The hotel also houses a large equestrian facility plus many small farm animals as well as a playground which will please small children. From the license plate designations of the cars at the restaurant we concluded that the zum Sussen Grund is a favorite destination for residents from throughout the region.
Note that the zum Sussen Grund is in a remote location a few miles outside of (and a few hundred meters above) Albstadt. Our cellphone reception was sporadic. Unfortunately, we could not make a connection with the hotel internet. There is bus stop a few hundred meters on a main road 200 yards away but the hotel is probably best reached by car. On the other hand the countryside is very pretty and the hotel is at the nexus of a large number of excellent well-marked hiking trails. Albstadt itself did not seem very interesting, but there are many other historical and cultural attractions nearby.

This was the very first trip to Germany for my wife and I and we decided to head for the Black Forest. It comprised 10 nights departing on Monday 5th August 2013 and returning on Thursday 15 August 2013.
We flew from London Stansted to Baden Baden (Ryanair) and had booked a hire car from Hertz. We always choose a mid range car for comfort (I have a slightly dodgy back) and in this instance the class was “Mercedes B class or similar”. Unfortunately, we ended up with “similar” which was an Audi A3 Sportback (the seats are nowhere near as comfortable as the Mercedes B class). But such is life. As the saying goes, “a bad day on holiday is better than a good day in your normal routine ”.

We planned our trip using a very helpful travel guide called “Back Roads Germany” (ISBN 978 1 4053 5374 8) - available from Amazon at around £10. We didn’t follow their routes and drives exactly but it was a good basis from which to create our own itinerary. And most importantly, all the places to visit had postcode references! - which is incredibly convenient when you are using a SatNav. (We have a Garmin nuvi 2545LM, purchased at a keen price from Halfords. This has lifetime free map upgrades, covers the whole of Europe and is a brilliant piece of kit that we can absolutely recommend to fellow Trip Advisor travellers. Instead of attaching this to the windscreen using a rubber sucker mount, (which keeps falling off the windscreen and which also leaves tell-tale circles on the windscreen to alert potential thieves that you might have a SatNav in the car), we use a Garmin “Friction Mount” - a deceptively stable weighted mount that is simply placed on top of the dashboard and which requires no attachment to the car whatsoever. This can be popped away out of sight each time you leave the car.

Highlights of our tour included the following:

Baden-Baden
Coffee and cake at Cafe Konig, Baden-Baden. (Can you believe they had run out of Black Forest Gateau - their “signature” cake?).
Drove along the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse and had (short) walk around Mummelsee
Freiburg.
Freilichmuseum (open air museum).
Triberg (Cuckoo clock “capital”).
Tubingen.
Blaubeuren (turquoise coloured pool of water)
Ulm (Ulm Minster has the highest church tower in the world).
Deutsches Uhrenmuseum (Clock Museum) at Furtwange
Burg Hohenzollern (Fairytale-looking castle).
Schloss Lichtenstein (another castle)
Strasbourg, France (we popped over the Rhine on our last day). We parked at “Le Petite France” car park – which had cheap and plentiful parking.

Our accommodation itinerary was as follows:
Night 1. Hotel Rebenhof (Baden Baden)
Night 2. Gasthof zum Weyssen Roessle (Schiltach)
Nights 3 to 5. Cafe Pension Feldbergblick (Titissee area)
Night 6. Hotel Gasthof zum Sussen Grund (Albstadt)
Nights 7 & 8. Hotel Restaurant Lowen (Ulm)
Nights 9 & 10. Waldcafe (Baden Baden)

(All of the above accommodations will be given individual reviews).

We now review Hotel Gasthof zum Sussen Grund (Albstadt)
as follows:

Our favourite accommodation of the holiday! A farm setting. In the middle of nowhere - but not a problem if you have a car. A stable block of horses (and other riding facilities). Friendly farm cats. Friendly dogs. Brilliant restaurant. Our room (number 5) was at ground level, opened onto its own little garden, and was adjacent to the stable block. Plentiful free parking. Large spacious room and large bathroom.

Staying for the second time in Hotel Süssen Grund, the weather didn't permit dining elsewhere in town. So we used the opportunity to try 5 nights in a row their restaurant, and honestly confirm its superb food quality and friendly service. Most places get boring in one way or another after two visits, but here one feels at home. And this is a great advantage that must be mentioned. There is enough variety in the menue to please the tongue in many different ways. Highly recommended, and an excellent venue for people not living in the hotel.

very nicely done, a little out of city but very nice rooms and food. I have stayed there twice and really liked the nature all around. A stable and few animals add to the stay. I recommed if you r in albstadt u shud stay here.

Albstadt is about halfway between Stuttgart and Lake Constance. In traveling between the two areas, if you take it slow and sightsee (like visit Tubingen and see the Lichtenstein and Hohenzollern castles), then staying in Albstadt is a convenient option. The Sussen Grund is a nice hotel. The rooms are clean and quite large. The breakfast was a nice touch - top quality breads and meats and eggs made to order. The hotel grounds are regal. I'm told there are hiking trails nearby but we didn't have time to investigate. I would definitely stay here again.

There are quit a few good accommodations around Albstadt - Ebingen, but very few can match the quality of accommodation, hospitality and service as Sussen Grund offers. The Hotel offers tranquility, and quality. The superiority is in the detail and that is noticeable. Every experienced -and non experienced- traveller will be impressed. The restaurant offers good quality of food, superb service and a nice ambience for everyone and any occasion. Highly recommended.
