I arrived in Kimitsu on September 29, 2011 for business and had reserved my stay at the Hamilton Hotel for 10 nights. Having stayed here before my expectations were not high, as the property is geared more towards the wedding industry in the area. However, service has always been top-notch.
On this visit I was pleasantly surprised to find that the 4th floor (where the guest rooms are) had been refurbished recently to a modern grey pallet with new sofas in the common area.
The lobby area is quite nice, with marble flooring and plush sofas. As the hotel is a wedding hotel, there is a wedding chapel, salon, and photo studio on the first floor.
The second and third floor are reserved for weddings.
Having seen the updates in the corridor and common areas, I was hopeful that the rooms were remodeled as well. No such luck, but the rooms are still very adequate. The average cost of a room at this hotel is very affordable, even with the slumping value of the US dollar. Rooms are clean, but dated, and it is difficult to find English-language programming on the television (if that is what you are looking for). Wireless internet access is available and free of charge. Speed of the connection varies, but is fairly fast overall. The beds are firm, but sleep well. Each room has a mini-fridge as well.
Housekeeping keeps the rooms spotless, and the property is usually quite quiet during the week.
Breakfast is typically included in the cost of the room, and you have a choice between a Western style breakfast, or traditional Japanese. Both are great and if you leave hungry, it's your own fault.
Service is outstanding. Typical of Japanese hotels, the staff will bend over backwards to please you, especially if you can communicate your needs/wants in Japanese. Some of the staff has basic English skills, but I find it is best to pick-up the language and communicate.
The hotel is within walking distance of many restaurants and some shopping; some good, some not so good, but I leave that to the individual to determine. IMO you should not look for American food in Japan. You will be disappointed, and it is better to eat what the locals do, it's better for you anyway and you will be happier for the decision.
I recommend the Hamilton to anyone staying in the Kimitsu area. As long as you are not expecting the Ritz Carlton, you will be pleased.
