“Great hospitality and Japanese traditional culture”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

My husband and I chose this hoter for maternity trip.
quite calm and relaxed atomsphere and we enjoyed the hotel.
From 15:00-18:00, fresh tomatos and cucambes with delicious miso are served at the entrance .
You can use library with coffee or tea.
In the evenings, you can experience one of the Japanese traditional things ,rice cake making called MOCHITSUKI.
The most exciting thing was dinner, kaiseki. Healthy and beautiful.
the room was big enough for us.
you can enjoy Onsen with provided juice or sake.

Also the hotel is very close to Kurobe dam.
you can enjoy sightseeing and the hotel.

I stayed in this Ryokan for 1 night on 20th April 2014.

Overall, the whole experience is very pleasing.
The room is fairly big, the food is nice (Kaiseki Dinner + Japanese Breakfast).

This Ryokan got several activities at night such as Mochi Making and Star Watching.

The Outdoor Onsen is very impressive, they provide cold sake next to the Onsen. (You can drink it while inside the onsen water).

However, I find the staff in the front desk does not understand English well (I would not fault them for it since it is a traditional Japanese Ryokan)

I had stayed with Hoshino Resorts last year which is how I discovered Kai Alps. Following several days business in Kyoto I came here mainly for a few days skiing. When I arrived it was snowing, and my large tatami suite on the 4th floor had a great view out to the Alps. First stop was the open air Onsen, particularly enjoyable when snowing and complimentary sake provided late afternoon. The kaiseki dinners were fantastic, if anything a little too much food, and on the first night a Japanese couple from Chiba invited me to join them, so as a solo traveller, it is possible to make friends here. The breakfasts were all Japanese, and my one request for the future would be to also offer a western breakfast choice ......after all the locals like western breakfast too! The staff were all extremely friendly, well mannered and very helpful. Although not located right at a ski resort, there was a free shuttle bus every morning at 08-40 to Goryu 47 in the Hakuba area (25-30 mins drive) and buses back at 14-30 and 16-30, a chance to relax and take in the beautiful alps and lakes scenery. Overall absolutely loved my stay at Kai Alps, about 4 hrs by train from Kyoto and 3.5 hrs to Tokyo.

We stayed in Kai Alps for 4 nights.
We were warmly welcome at the front gate and the check in was quick and easy. Although the staff speaks limited English, we managed to communicate and checked into our room without much fuss.
The room is very well maintained, spacious and clean. The service is warm and friendly and has a rustic feel.
One unique feature of Kai Alps is the activities they have for guests. Every day (late afternoon) they steamed sweet potatoes in the open fire furnace and offer as light snack for the guest. It was delicious and adding a very nice touch to the rural settings.
After dinner ended, the staff prepare rice cakes and invite house guests to participate in the making of the rice cakes and eat it. Again very unique to this ryokan. The open air bath with apples and lemon floating in the bath was unique and a clever way to provided the ambience for a truly relaxing hot spring experience.
The food (breakfast and dinner) was well presented and delicious.
We enjoyed the overall atmosphere of this resort which provides a very relaxing atmosphere in a rural setting.
What really stands out is the staff high service levels and their smile is genuine and service provided with a warm heart. The staff looked after us well and nothing was ever too much bother. We felt very welcome and had a wonderful time at this ryokan.
We will definitely stay here again.
