“Friendly and Comfortable”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 November 2012

We stayed one night at this very pleasant and well-situated minshuku. The room and the communal facilities were very clean and the family-style shared baths were very nice ones. The food was excellent. Some English is spoken and the owner is friendly and helpful.

I stayed in this minshuku for 1 night, hiking from Yabuhara over the Torii pass. It is located in the middle of the main street. It consists of the main house with the reception and I believe some rooms upstairs. The second house is at the back of the garden, my room was on the first floor of this house. The room was a typical minshuku 6-tatami room, with WC and hand washing facilities in the hallway. The communal baths (2) were in the main house across the garden. WiFi is available for free, in both the main house and in your room (2 different passwords), ask the owner.
Dinner and breakfast were served in the main house. The food was very good, consisting of numerous small dishes.
This is a typical minshuku providing standard service and good value for money. It is clean and in good location in Narai. I would recommend a stay here.
There are lots of shops along the main street, many of them dedicated to the lacquerware. Unless you are a lacquerware connoiseur and look for something specific, buy it here - there is no need to travel to Kiso-Hirasawa, the capital of lacquerware in the Kiso valley.
There is an interesting coffee shop on the right hand side of the main street (going towards the railway station) where the owner can make you a coffee using the old vacuum syphon method. You wil have a nice chat and be asked to sign his guest book.

My wife and I stayed at the Iseya during a trip to Narai. Had not stayed at a minshuku before and it was a contrast to a ryokan. The Iseya was welcoming, and we were given a good orientation to the routines of the minshuku. Our room was a six mat room, which is small, but typical of a minshuku. There were communal facilities near the room.
The meals were in a large common room in the front of the building. It was raining, so we headed over there through a garden area wearing yukata, and with oiled paper umbrellas. Very Edo period. The meal was lavish and featured local products. I couldn't eat everything, but enjoyed what I did eat.
We were expected to lay out our futons, etc, ourselves. No problem since my wife is Japanese. We slept well to the sound of rain falling outdoors. The room had a small TV. The next morning while we ate, the room was put back into order by the staff.
The Iseya is reputed to be the best minshuku in Narai, and we found it to be very pleasant.
Again, visitors need to be aware that a minshuku doesn't have all the services of a ryokan, but the Iseya was certainly worth staying at.

We had a very pleasant stay, the owners made us feel so welcome and a party of Japanese weekenders made a fuss of us as well. The meals were excellant and the village itself was very peaceful. Don't miss it!
