“Awesome location - even better service”
Reviewed 14 April 2014

We stayed at the Silver Horn late in March 2014. Nori-san speaks good English, is super polite and even more helpful (he gave us good advice on where to eat different foods, organised taxis for us, helped look up the best way to get to our next destination and even wrote them all out in Japanese).

The place itself is a Japanese style lodge with tatami and futons with the rooms big enough to easily accommodate three adults. It has a warm cozy atmosphere with an onsite onsen. Situated literally right across the road from the Akakura Kanko lifts means you dont have to trek home with gear. I really recommend the Japanese breakfast - its just what you need for a day of finding Myokos hidden pow stashes.

Its a short walk into the main dining area - but its a nice walk back to the lodge, especially after a bellyful of great food and sake.

Will definitely come back to the Silver Horn, Arigato Nori-san, mata ne!

Located in the Akakura Kanko area of Myoko-Kogen, the location suited us perfectly. A short 5 minute walk to the main Akakura Onsen area of shops, eating places, rental, post office, ski hire etc, and a convenient ski shuttle bus stop nearby with connections to the other Myoko Kogen Ski areas.
Our Japanese tatami style room on the third floor was rear facing, with a lovely view across the village rooftops to the white expanse of mountains in the distance. The room layout was spacious for two, raked ceilings added to the feeling of light and space. An efficient heater kept the room warm and dry. Practical room amenities; plenty of hanging rail space along one wall, a hand basin in the room, wide shelf, and under an additional rail for hanging smaller items such as gloves to dry near the heater; a small flat screen TV, low, small table and floor cushion seating. (for those unfamiliar with Japanese tatami rooms these rooms do not have wardrobe space instead wall rails and coat hangers are supplied and bedding is stored in a separate deep cupboard during the day. Toilets were located at the end of the hall.
On each floor tea making facilities were available, water boiler, tea, tea cups and teapot, accessible 24 hours.
On the lower level of Silverhorn are the shared bathrooms; these comprise separate male and female rooms, Japanese style, with dressing area, hair dryer and vanity and deep hot tub to soak in after shower cleansing. This was spotlessly clean and spacious. As with most Japanese style bathrooms, the hours of operation of the hot tub area was between 15:30 and 22:30. Also on the lower level ski storage, drying room and washing machine. Across the hall a small cosy sitting/ reading area.
The 24 hour western style heated bathrooms were located on the 4th floor, these were modern, always clean and fresh.
Nori Ushida and his staff were cheerful, always willing to help. Japanese or Western style breakfast is served on chunky, large wooden tables in the street facing breakfast room. A pleasant room though a fresh coat of paint on walls needed here is a slight criticism. Breakfast was substantial and well presented. The Ikenotaria Resort ski lifts are directly opposite Silverhorn and it is possible to hire ski equipment there,... however we looked at the skis and boots on offer there and were unimpressed with the assembly line hire process, or the out of style/ too worn quality of ski equipment on offer there.
Instead we chose to walk five minutes towards the main Akakura village, and opposite the Post Office we found Satomiya rental shop. Here we hired quality, well maintained boots and skis for the same price. This family run shop was a pleasure to deal with, a skiers shuttle bus stop is across the road, and at the end of a days skiing we able to leave our skis and boots there for collection next day. During the day our walking boots were kept warm and dry for us, without the need to stomp about in ski boots. Nearby, above Satomiya, is a lift ticket sales office of one of the Akakura Onsen lifts, extremely convenient.

An extremely comfortable and authentic japanese hotel, serving wonderful breakfast, there is free wifi in all the rooms. It is situated across the road from the bubble lift, so no shlepping around with kit at the beginning and end of the day. The owner, Nori, speaks very good English and nothing is too much trouble. He will go out of his way to help you, they sell discounted lift passes, they can arrange shuttle buses to any neighbouring ski fields and they work closely with Myoko Snowsports who can provide all ski equipment and lessons in English, he arranged massages in our rooms (excellent) sorted out any transport that we needed and generally made this a truly Wonderful Japanese visit. I couldn't recommend it enough.

Nori, the Japanese man who runs the hotel has excellent English and is really helpful when it comes to asking anything about Myoko!
It is super close to the gongola at akakura kanko which is a huge bonus. The only thing i can say negative about the location is it is a 5 - 10 minute walk to get up to where the majority of restaurants are.
The breakfast is delicious with an offering of a Japanese or Western breakfast.
The rooms are simple but perfect for a trip to the snow
The traditional japanese bath (onsen) downstairs is great for relaxing in after a day on the mountain!
Would definitely stay there again.

Stayed here for 6 nights. Place is clean well presented. Has a lovely onsen downstairs. Nori who runs the place is super. Very helpful. Speaks excellent English. Also very helpful on where to ski. You couldn't get any closer to the gondola of the local hill. Such a treat.

I would definitely come back to this place. Prices are very reasonable /cheap.

We had an amazing stay at Hotel Silverhorn in January 2014. Nori and the rest of the staff were so friendly and accommodating, willing to help with anything they could! They also speak great English which was useful for translating Ski pass deals :) The traditional Japanese tatami mats and rooms were comfortable, bathroom was clean and the onsen downstairs was lovely. They offered Japanese breakfast or western breakfast on request, both of which were tasty and plenty to fill you up before a day of skiing. The location of Hotel Silverhorn is perfect, you are about 100m walk from the bottom of the Akakura Kanko Resort gondola which has great skiing for all levels and you are also about 80m away from the free shuttle bus to Suginohara and other resorts. The main Akakura Onsen town is an easy 10 min walk away and this is where you can find great places to eat, a post office and other shops. I'd highly recommend staying at the friendly Hotel Silverhorn when visiting Myokokogen!
