“Still the best place in the Algarve!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 September 2013

We returned for the 2nd year for 8 wonderful nights at Muxima and Sofia and Jorge were as warm and welcoming as before. They truly make the property and give this guesthouse heart and soul which is missing from other places that are not owner run. This year to add to their menagerie, they had 3 new chickens and they are also getting a new puppy. The donkey, goat and pig remain a big draw for our son not to mention the frogs in the swimming pond. Big, sociable breakfasts remain a plus and Sofia has a good chat with all the guests every day. I cannot fathom how someone last year said they were cold and inhospitable!
They have taken on board some of the feedback received over the last year and our suite, Chaouen had a new skylight to give it a bit more natural light as it was a little on the dark side. There was also new comfy outdoor furniture outside Casa do Monte, the breakfast cabin has been walled in so it is now more like a little hippy beach shack – all the doors and windows open up on a good day (of which there are many) but they can keep it battened down on a windier day.
They have also added mini dishwashers to the suites and there are new lamps in Chaouen. There are new canopies over some of the sun beds by the pool and new loungers.
There is a little shop selling some crafty bits and bobs and Sofia and Jorge are great on discussing local beaches and places to eat. Unbeatable in our opinio for the causal, chilled out vibe and the warmth and friendliness of this family.

Room Tip: Chaouen for privacy or Mangalore for families.

As other reviewers have stated, the passion of the owners comes through in every detail at Muxima. They are kind and generous people. Unfortunately I only stayed one night, but I felt so relaxed after a morning swim in the eco pool (such a nice break from chlorine pools) and soaking in the sun to the sounds of children's laughter. The property is sprawling and with chairs tucked here and there under the shade of trees and our room's daybed on the porch it was hard not to want to curl up with a book or take an afternoon nap. On top of that the breakfast was very good and the rooms are beautifully decorated and very clean. Jorge and Sofia were so helpful in getting my friend and I to our next destination - a nice surprise. Thanks again for all your help Jorge and Sofia!

We visited with our two children ages 6 and 4. After a drive from the airport we arrived at Muxima, welcomed by beautiful rustic Portuguese scenery and Sofia, who was so enthusiastic and happy to greet us. She immediately showed us some tips on where to visit ( beaches, restaurants etc).

The grounds of Muxima were a real escape for us. In the UK we live amongst busy traffic and the hectic day to day routine of family life. Wild flowers, long grasses, eucaliptas trees and chickens happily wondering around, are what greet you every morning. It was so nice. We stayed in the Coba apartment, and found it to be clean and tidy. The kids loved the hammock. We visited in May and enjoyed beautiful sunshine about 21 degrees most days.

The essence of Muxima is that the owners promote treating nature with respect and in doing so, you are treated every day with beautiful wildlife. They really have created a peaceful place where kids can roam, enjoying tree swings and an eco pond to swim in (with frogs!).

You will need to hire a car, as all the beaches and restaurants are a short drive away (we used Zitauto - very reasonable hire rates and no damage deposit). This side of Portugal is less touristy and more quiet, but we did enjoy one day getting gifts and looking around Lagos.

We would recommend this holiday to people who want to get away from the hustle bustle. It's all about the simple things. Relaxing, good food and enjoying being with one another.

I really enjoyed my time here. It is simple, quiet, no frills stuff and very well positioned for all the beaches in the area. Host and hostess were very helpful and guided us to some great restaurants. Will stay again.

Traveling a lot around the world, looking for nice hotels or guest houses I think I have a real kind of point of view about hospitality for a while!
I NEVER EVER felt so welcomed in any place, true smile, true parts of laughing : sincerity in everything.
You have to be good enough to find the way, but once you did, you just want to forget the one to leave... Feeling of a family you are back to after years! In the middle of 28 hectares you find houses, places to enjoy the view and feel nature around you. This is the place to feel free, to feel away from life... Heaven as I wrote!
This is not possible to get better advices in everything, all places we've been : restaurant, beaches...were exactly what Sofia felt we wanted to have.
Can not think about telling about or keeping for myself... Because I'm a talkative man, I already send the links to several of my friends... Already think about booking the whole place with lost of friends and close the doors of heaven behind ourselves for a few days.
Location is great to reach beaches and walking area.
I can not find enough words to say Thank You to Sofia and Jorge!!!

Room Tip: Keep eyes closed and be confident, you can not be disappointed!

The location is nice, old houses that were well refurbished and a lot of items from different part of the world.
But outside the buildings a lot of cleaning should have been done. The stairs from the main building to the 3 suites really need some work. The natural swimming pool looks abandoned and dangerous.
It's great to sleep there, very quiet, very relaxing but the prices are of a 5 star hotel anywhere else in Portugal.
A lot to do if they want to keep those prices.

From the minute we arrived to be greeted by Sofia, we knew we hadn't booked long enough for our stay (5 nights). Our room was large, cool and comfortable. The door lead to a vista of meadow flowers, eucalyptus & cork-oak trees and the breakfast room - which is a large wooden building standing in the grounds. The frogs in the pond sang all day and night and - thanks to Sofia's detailed list of restaurant recommendations - we ate well every day. At the end of most evenings, we ended-up in the communal library/lounge for an hour or so, where Sofia and/or Jorge would often pop-in to chat - and Jorge to play selections from his excellent collection of World music.
The only downside of our stay is the fact that our kids are adult and have left home, so we were on our own - when they were children, our kids would have loved it at Muxima.
The World is too big and there's not enough time to see it all - but this is one place that we will definitely return to. Be warned, though, the relaxation you'll experience seeps into your soul - on our first morning back in the UK, we didn't wake-up until 9:30... oops!
