“A Rainforest Paridise!”

We totally enjoyed ourselves at Pura Vida Ecolodge. The drive up to the lodge is definitely an experience, but not that difficult. We rented a standard 4x4 and had no problems getting to the place. The last few hills are steep, but its only the last mile or so.

We woke up to howler monkeys, and fell asleep to the frogs! It was incredible! We had many great nights just sitting on the couch with the sliding doors open watching the lighting show.

Gersan and Ily were very sweet. There tour was fantastic. It definitely wasn't your normal tour. Riding around in the small boat through the mangroves is just breathtaking. We saw monkeys, many different birds, iguanas, and so many other animals.

The wifi did die out on us after around 4 days, but all the sodas have free wifi so it wasn't that big of a deal.

Thanks! We hope to be back soon!!!

“Beautiful ecolodge in the jungle but difficult access”
Reviewed 27 August 2013 for a stay in August 2013

The ecolodge is a unique property in a beautiful area. The view from the deck is incredible and the location extremely unpopulated, peaceful and wild. The design of the property is extremely clever and aesthetically well done, making the best use of the lovely views and breezes.

The property is generally as described apart from a few things which I feel it is necessary to mention in order for future guests to get the best out of their trip:

1) The access road to the ecolodge (last 10 minutes of the journey) is unmade and in parts it is a gradient of 1:3, curved and single track. We rented a 4WD but our car had real problems getting up and down the road safely every day even though we are well travelled confident drivers (Monteverde was easy in comparison). I would recommend future guests to make sure that they get a good quality top of the range 4WD to tackle the roads in this area so that hopefully this wouldn't be a problem for them.

2) Despite there being nice restaurants 20 minutes away, the difficult access road means having dinner out and driving at night is only for the very brave.

3) The entire property is not lockable from the inside. The two bedrooms are not internally connected - they are completely separated by outdoor decking and a staircase so need to be locked separately which we were not expecting. For this reason I would say it is very unsuitable for a young family as, unless the parents want to sleep on a sofabed, the children would effectively have to go along an outdoor decking area and staircase (with 10ft drop!) and 2 locked doors to get to their parents in the night. This was not a problem for us, as our children are teenagers, and would not be a problem for an adult group, but clearly should be mentioned so that young families can make an informed decision.

4) We tried the recommended ecolodge 'easier' walk but found it unpassable and disappointing - impossibly steep and the steps were rotted.

5) The property encourages tranquillity, and therefore does not have the usual equipment you might expect such as TV, hi fi, kettle, toaster, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave etc

The property itself is wonderful but unfortunately the access drive added undue stress to our trip on a daily basis. Despite my above points (which I hope will be taken as informative and honest) I do think the ecolodge is a fantastic getaway in the jungle, for the right group. It offers a very different type of accommodation and experience to everywhere else we stayed during our travels in Costa Rica, and was great value for money compared to other accommodations in a similar price bracket.

Management Response
13 Sep 2013
We feel it necessary to comment on the following so as to make sure that future guests are 100% clear on the exact situation at Pura Vida Ecolodge - as we feel that this last guest's review/comments are slightly misleading.

1) The access road to Pura Vida Ecolodge is exactly as described on our profile and even more detailed in the welcome pack. Depending on the season (dry or wet) it is well maintained, dirt road (in part) between a 7-10 minute drive from the main road. Our eco-retreat is at around 350 metres (with all the inherent benefits of panoramic views & sea breezes one gets at this altitude,) so being so close to the coast/sea level it is inevitable that parts of the access road are steep, but well worth the drive). What we don't agree on however is that a top of the range 4WD is necessary, nor does one have to be an especially competent or experienced off-road driver to arrive safely and easily at Pura Vida Ecolodge. As the description says, the access road is maintained throughout the year, has adequate drainage/water control channels and is perfectly accessible. Compared to some roads in the south (and more wild part of Costa Rica) we'd say it's actually very good! While we do recommend a 4WD (as is necessary in most of Costa Rica realistically due to the off-road nature of really exploring the country and its hidden gems) a lot of our guests have been absolutely fine in a Suzuki Jimmy (which we know to be the most basic of 4WD's) and NONE of our previous guests have had any problems arriving or leaving Pura Vida Ecolodge by day or by night.

2) Yes, there are wonderful dining options in the area by day & night, but like I said, NONE of our previous guests have had any problems with access by day or by night. NOTE: We do always recommend trying to arrive at Pura Vida Ecolodge by daylight on the day of arrival to familiarize yourselves with the road and orientation of the villa.

3) This is factually incorrect and we do not understand why the guest has written this. The entire house is of course completely 100% lockable from both the inside and outside. To clarify, the second bedroom (the Jungle Suite) forms the ground floor of Pura Vida Ecolodge and is located directly below the living area (open-plan lounge & kitchen). As we explain in our welcome pack, the house only essentially needs to be locked when leaving the property, but again can be locked from both the inside & outside (all rooms) when occupied if the guests feels more comfortable this way. We have had all sorts of families staying at the villa, and with a very comfy sofa bed as a third bed option, families with young children have used what's on offer successfully before, no problem.

4) The nature trails throughout the Pura Vida Ecolodge retreat are regularly maintained BUT this particular guest stayed in the heart of the rainy season where the area does tend to have quite extreme weather and heavy rainfall most afternoons - unfortunately (or fortunately) we cannot always completely control the effects of mother nature. As explained in the welcome pack, the other (longer and more adventurous nature trail) has a wider and 'easier' trail, come rain or shone ;)

5) This is absolutely correct - being a eco-luxury retreat, we do encourage guests to embrace the surroundings, nature and really switch off from their busy day-to-day lives. That said, we do plan to include a kettle and toaster in the near future.

While we thank you for your positive comments, we do wonder why you gave us an overall AVERAGE rating given that you used the words UNIQUE, BEAUTIFUL, PEACEFUL, WONDERFUL, TRANQUILITY, FANTASTIC GETAWAY numerous times. Obviously we are very keen to maintain our very high standards & 100% fantastic guest satisfaction, so we do hope the above comments clarify the last guest's constructive criticisms.

Pura Vida Ecolodge is a well-designed, inspiring, gorgeous piece of architecture nestled into lush jungle landscape with ocean views...what is not to love? Gersan, the owners' friend and surrogate host, was attentive, accommodating and perfectly charming. We were thrilled to arrive to an infinity pool and large bowl of tropical fruit after a long day of travel! The thoughtful little touches (ample, creatively arranged candles, blender, south pacific area guide, plently of incredibly soft towels) were evident, used and appreciated. The indoor/outdoor flow was absolutely PERFECT, with doors in all the right places for privacy and bug/air control. This space beautifully exploits the exotic wonder of Costa Rica and the pura vida lifestyle!! We loved every minute..thank you for contributing in such a huge way to what was ultimately a wonderful, relaxing vacation!
