“Small groups and a lot of animals. Visability is low.”
Reviewed 4 April 2013

We dove Isla Cano with Mystic dive. This company is great. They provided fruit in the morning, a sandwitch in the afternoon, and a snack on the way back. I think they have a limit of 8 people on the boat which I like. I prefer smaller group tours. Snorkeling was $115 per person and Scuba was $158.

It is about an hour boat ride from Ojochal The day we went was fairly calm. We had no trouble with sea sickness. I suppose there are days that you may need to take something but it sounds like it is not that frequent.

Snorkelers got three sites and scuba was two dives and one snorkel. We saw a lot of animals which included two sharks, a turtle, tons of fish (Jacks), limited coral, and an eel while underwater. Above water we saw crabs, and a pod of dolphins and just barely caught a whales tail. Of course these things are not guaranteed but this day was great for wildlife.

You also spend about 1/2 hour on one of the better beaches in Costa rica. No bathrooms on this visit so the ocean is it.

The visability in the water was around 30 feet. So don't expect the clarity of some caribean destinations.

“Snorkelling adventure”
Reviewed 30 January 2013

We took this excursion on a Monday and were met by Kumari at the centre at 8:30. We travelled by boat to Canos Island National Park. It took about 1 hour at a good speed. We saw several dolphins and sea turtles on our way there. We snorkelled for about an hour or so in one spot then were taken to the island to walk along the beach and explore. There is no dock, so we had to get off the boat as each wave brought us closer to the beach. It was quite an experience! After about 20 - 30 minutes on the island, we got back on the boat and had a picnic lunch that was included in the fee. It was very good. You did not lack for any food or drink if you wanted it. We went snorkelling again after lunch for an hour in a great spot that had such a huge variety of fish that you basically just had to float there and you could see all kinds of them. We even saw sea turtles swimming below us.
All in all it was a great excursion. Jose and Guillermo, who operated the boat, were great and so was Kumari, who runs Mystic Dive Centre. We had a beautiful day, we returned around 2:00 pm. One word of caution, make sure you put plenty of sunscreen on, often, because even with a t-shirt on you can get burned!!!
